Hey so I'm really keen to get an SSD today and need a bit of advice on which to pick and typical performance that I can expect with installing one.

First. Do these run well with the g73? Are there any problems using one?

Also how do I do a fresh install of windows? I didnt get a recovery disk with my g73 purchase.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

The chipset that is used in the G73 (and power settings in Windows) limits SSD performance. There are some registry tweaks to make it run almost at full speed though.
Go to Problems and Solutions link in my sig.
There is a how to do a fresh install thread on the forum with all the necessary links to Windows 7 and drivers DVDs downloads. Search for it.

Moving up, you will see a huge performance jump because of the access speed difference itself. You will be very pleased. You are in an ideal position to make that machine great. Buy yourself a ssd just large enough for OS and programs, a bracket and, if needed a HD capable of holding all your data. We are at a time now where you can buy the most powerful ssd there is (OWC 40Gb with SandForce at $119) for a great price and have all the storage in the world right in that machine...

I did this to my sons G2 before he left for Afghan and he still thanks me...

Just to get some perspective, Windows 7 Professional will use about 40 GB of hdd space, unless you take measures to mitigate it.

I have been using my G73jh A1 since June with Windows 7 Pro and only have 15 GB in use on the SSD. (see sig link)

I would recommend getting 160 GB SSD if you don't want to worry about conserving space. 80 GB will be fine if you work on conserving space. I wouldn't recommend any less. ;)

Someone on the Mac forums posted this one @ Costco 128GB for $189.99

I know very little about SSD drives so I don't know if this is a "better" SSD or not. Price looks good for 128GB.

Costco - $189.99 after $55 in Savings Kingston 128GB SSDNow V Solid State Notebook Hard Drive Bundle

    Cheers,

Wow.... Not quite. You can install Win 7 Ult 64 bit which is the most packed at 8.5Gb total once you optimize the ssd and shut down some of the things that arent needed.

U can get it smaller than that with a certain software prg... but 40Gb....no way sorry... All my software, data and OS including videos/piks music and data still isnt near 40gb.

Im only using 34GB on my X25-M and thats with Win 7 Professional, all the programs (Office, Photoshop, a ton of benchmark and monitoring software, all my games...) and i i even left a 4GB pagefile on it (i did tweak it a bit, but nothing so drastic).
I dont know where you came up with 40GB...
