If we are talking the ST9500420AS, that's not the XT model, and needs a different updater.

That makes sense, although I've noticed that Seagate likes to use the same model numbers with incompatible sub models that are very difficult to spot. I had to replace a Seagate Barracuda raid drive on one of my desktops a few years ago, but was forced to return what was supposed to be an 'identical' drive from a reputable vendor because it was an incompatible variant that was not apparent until you tried to use it.

hi everyone, i have Asus G53JW, i just downloaded and noticed my fw version via Hdtune pro, and my Seagate's firmware version seems 0003sdm1, not 0002sdm1 nor 0005sdm1. And i haven't noticed any major issues such as loudness, clicking sounds. Do i still need to update fw or should i keep current one?(0003sdm1)
-
think of it as an optional upgrade if you are having no issues.
-
Sorry for bringing back this thread, but I'd like to know if by upgrading my Seagate's firmware the noise (vibration) it is doing will be fixed.
Thank you. -
should i upgrade the firmware when im using the st9500420as as 2nd hard drive in my laptop?
lately im having problems win 7 recognizing the caddy drive once in while, although its most likely due to the face the caddy drive is not bolted in at all. -
^^^If you do not have any of the issues listed in the first post I would not recommend doing it.

hi
this thread is very old but my problem is very new.
so i updated from the 02S to 05S firmware with no luck still I have the click+beep sound.
Should I change to another hard drive or can I flash back down lets say to 04S ?
any thought ?
and can I flash back in general the HDD ?
I've done the flash through the Bios so no worries -

(If you try this I would backup or image the entire hard drive to an external device in case it bricks)
Note there are other safer workarounds for the clicking http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...-drive-clicking-noise-thread.html#post2698815 -
I actually used crystal disk info and disabled AAM/APM ! works well for now no heart-aching clicking sound
I repost in a week to show the result of this manipulation
note that I enabled crystal disk info to run at startup.
Thanks @JOSEA and @JehutyZeroshift for ur help -
Just worried. -

Following this thread for a long time and i own a G53JW which is shipped with same Seagate Momentus model mentioned here. But mine's firmware is 3SDM1 and extremely quiet and gave no major issues to worh a firmware upgrade, no notable issues at all. Thank God. I don't know how 3SDM1 users feel here. Checking SMART status with HD Tune 5.0 also.

A reallocated sector value of 93 looks very dangerous and you should better back-up all your files from that drive before it gets too late.
-
SMART values are notoriously reported in a non-standard way by Seagate, which results in many warnings by various types of software.
Also, burning the Dell fw on non-Dell versions of the drive results in even worse reading of smart values (on my disk, temperature is 240*C). -

Woah a little late to the party but fair enough .
Dell usually do muck around with drive firmware so usually flashing it onto a non dell drive will usually cause issues. -
I have been having lock-ups with mine off/on for awhile. It cleared up after I had run CCCleaner a few times in a row. It is random, system doing nothing, surfing web, etc...I replaced it with a EVO 840 250GB SSD and did a clean install of Win7 and a few things from Asus. So far so good. But curious if this firmware would resolve the freezing issue. Doubtful since this seems to be for clicking of the drive. And I am thinking of popping it into the 2nd bay and looking for a decent tool to check the drive itself out. At Seagate's website it said my firmware was the latest (riiiiiight) via their online tools and that drive query tool. Weird thing is I had the Targus cooling pad running and an internal 250GB HDD, I removed/disconnected both and I almost got a full backup before it froze again, that's when I went and replaced the boot drive (only one in it atm and been on all day - zero lockups and cooling pad plugged in and various USB thumb drives for loading stuff onto it).

Does the drive make a strange noise at all?
