I got my G series Republic of Gamers laptop several months ago. Best Buy people did not find any problem with it although the speakers are some of the weakest, most feeble ones I have ever heard. As far as I know they are not defective. Have the volume on high and still not impressive volume at all. Got headset and now even through the ear phones at top volume I can trouble still hearing every word when I watch movies via Netflix streaming.
Now I am really stunned when I compare the sound volume to the new Dell Studio 15 I just got. Volume is incredibly higher on Dell.
What the H is going on? Any thoughts? I hope there are just some features or settings in the Asus which I simply don't have set up right.
    Thanks everyone.

just realized I have not ever done any driver update downloads. Don't know if that would help or not.

Which g series do you have? The g51 didnt have thw most impressive speaker system at all. Going into the audio driver and checking loudness equalization might help a bit. However with headphones you should be golden so there is somethimg wrong with your audio drivers or your sound card. Go to Realtek and download the newest high def audio codec to see if that helps.

There are several G series notebooks. Please be more specific as to the model.

Your volume is all the way up with Fn+F12? Your mixer settings don't have the volume set too low? It sounds like you may have a general audio problem, since your headphones have a low volume in addition to your speakers.

You could try a linux livecd/liveusb like Ubuntu to see if your speakers and line out/headphones work at a normal volume level there, after checking the volume in the mixer. That would rule out software and leave you with a hardware problem. Otherwise maybe your drivers or windows settings are to blame.

If you have a G73, then there's definately something wrong.

For comparison, the Dell Studio 15 speakers are smartphone-ish quality (even with the sub!); the G73 working properly, with some minor equalization settings is enough to rock a small conference room ;).

yeah, I used to have the g51 from best buy, the speakers were HORRIBLEEEE. You could barely hear anything, loved the laptop hated the audio. If its the g73 like others are saying than could be a problem. The G73 have great speakers imo.
