Should I be worried about a few games pushing my temps high?

So I was playing Aliens Vs. Predator earlier, max settings but no antialiasing or v-sync. After maybe 2 hours of playtime, my highest temp was listed as 87, which is higher than anything I'd ever seen before. I usually peak at low '80s, if even that. Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 are the exception.

So then I rebooted, fired up HWinfo and played Mass Effect 2 for a good 2 hours, maybe longer. My highest was listed at 81 for that gameplay session, so that brought my relief, I thought my G73's paste was going out already, after only 3 weeks of owning it.

I should also mention I was running Aliens Vs. Predator in DirectX 11 mode, which probably might've added to the extra GPU stress.

So basically, I'm asking if I'll be alright letting games like Crysis, Aliens Vs. Predator, etc push my GPU further than most of my games? I knew Metro 2033 and Crysis 2 were some of those games that absolutely require good computers to even run. I run Metro 2033 in DirectX 10 because 11 lags me up too much.

So is it alright for a few games to push beyond what I normally see for my GPU temps? Or should I scale back some settings?

    Thanks.

Using the 11.3, flashed vBois, no overclocking.

Do you think that Metro 2033, Aliens Vs. Predator, and Crysis 2 are the cause? They can be taxing when maxed out, from what I understand. Plus, I am in KS and the weather's getting warmer here, we're slowly creeping into the high '70s and low '80s next week (Fahrenheit)

I just ask because it's only happening on what seems to be graphically intensive games.

Run HWINFO32 to get exact temp readings of each section of the GPU and take the highest temp.

It might help if we knew what setup you are using JH JW SW? If you are running the 5870M and the temp you mention IS your highest temp then you should be very pleased with those temps as they are way below the normal heat produced by that card. If you are running the 460GTX then they are normal and within operating temps and you dont need to worry.

GPU's are made to take upto around 111-113oC before melting. The limit is put at 105oC when it will normally shut down. Anything upto around 95-98oC is totally normal and should not be worried about. Anything below 90oC you can be pleased with and know the cooling is working under load.

At Extreme burn in I would guess you would hit around 97/98oC.

As a recommendation maybe blow some compressed air into the fan vents to shift any dust clogging it up but it does not sound repaste worthy at the moment.

    Sorry!

I'm using an Asus G73 Best Buy model, with the 5870.

    So I'm good then?

That's what I was thinking, that they're such high-end and taxing games that running them at max (or close to it) would hit the GPU with higher temps than running a much less graphics-intensive game like Mass Effect 2.

Using HWinfo, the highest temp I got so far since owning my G73 (it's 3 weeks old) was just tonight, I hit 87 after a 2 to 2 and a half hour session of Aliens vs. Predator, where I had everything maxed, no antialiasing or vsync, and running at DirectX11.

I've never ran a game at DirectX11 before, so that was another possible cause, I was thinking.

    But thanks for the help!

Mobility cards normally run hot the 5870M has had its issues with that and repasting has been proven to lower them in certain circumstances however run HWINFO32 and take your highest temp and compare to what I said above. Repasting should only be an option if you pushing into the 100's and that would depend if your under warranty as to who would do it for you.

EDIT: 87oC your highest temp is also my highest temp after repasting :D feel proud!

Have a run of FURMARK if you want to really stress it and keep an eye on the temps to check its max after 15 mins.

I think you should leave HWINFO32 on and Alt-tab out of your game at graphics intensive scene to see the current temp of your GPU. I sometimes would have highest temp listed at 80-ish but it was hovering around 77oC most of the time.

    E I G H T Y - S E V E N D E G R E E S C E L S I U S ? ? ! OH NOES! ALERT THE COAST GUARD! AMBER ALERT!!! AAIIIGGHHHH!!!11!

(hehe...) Actually, your temps are just fine. The higher temps can be caused by unoptimized code. Nothing to worry about until insects are roasting weinies off your cooling ports.
