I would say no, if you want to upgrade from a JH, then something with a 570m/580m or 6990m is the pretty much the only logical upgrade.

Basically I have to either get a clevo or sager desktop replacement.
From notebookcheck.net, a gtx560m is only 16% better than a 5870m. But the newegg deal seems to be very attractive.

Not worth it. Sager NP8150/8130 worth it.

Thanks everyone, the problem with Sager is warranty issues. I live in Singapore and the sager resellers are not exactly cheap. Wondering which reseller should I purchase from? Exoticpc?

The 5870M is overclocked even faster than a 560M so it would be in some categories a downgrade, in some games the 58faster even without overclocking. ASUS should sell the G74 with a 580M, that could be called a "decent upgrade".

Also 12GB RAM sound good, but you won't feel any difference to 6 or 8GB in modern games.

You are probably confusing something. I have G73 JH BST-7 (bestbuy version in us) with 740qm and 6GB of ram, and I am able to play BF3 at 900p with EVERYTHING set to "HIGH" and AF 16x, only AA is off, and light oclusion is at medium setting - and I get a stable 32 FPS.

So not sure why you play "at low settings"? Also, if GTX560m is only 15% faster than 5870m, that means in my case I would get only about 5FPS boost over 5870m, for about 37FPS on mentioned above in-game graphic settings.

Now, from that "notebookcheck.com" I know that GTX570m is 15% faster than GTX560m, which translates to another roughly 6FPS, for about 43FPS total.

And finaly, notebookcheck.com states that GTX580m is about 35% faster than GTX570. This card would give you about an extra 14FPS, for a total of 57(!). Meaning with this card you could have most of settings set to "ultra", and have AA, AF, and light oclusion set to max!

IMHO, dont settle for anything less than GTX580m or similar such as Radeon 6990m (consider that AMD card is substantialy cheaper, I mean really substantialy cheaper, but is, practicaly, equal in performance).
Otherwise, what is the point of getting new laptop just have a marginal increase in performance? Good luck!

you may have somthing wrong in your lappy you can check if your have any problem related to cpu or thermal problems or maybe gpu temps cause i can run on 900p in my BST7 on ultra with stable 30+ fps and getting 40+ with high and both AA off.

the only upgrade that is resonable is to get a lappy with sandy brige + 580 or 6970-6990 other than that its just waste of $$

how on earth are you able to get 30+ fps on ultra settings in BF3 on 5870m??? this is not possible even on 580m and 6990m, and would take dual cards to be able to get such fps on ultra settings. WHY LIE, MAN?

on this link you cans see how many fps you get on a GTX560m in various games, including BF3. 580m 35% faster than 560m, so no 30+ fps on ultra settings for either card!
