Long story short, went into best buy 3 days ago to pick up the G73JH-BST7 as it was priced at $119, well when i got to the store that price was gone and replaced with the $1399 price tag... Well in talking to the sales associate they gave me the older model the G73JH-RBBX05 new in box for the same price they sell the referb model for $1050... Well while out at a best buy on the other side of town i see the BST7 model sticker price is $1199... I got a picture... do you think it is worth the hassle to go into best buy, make a complaint and return my computer to purchase the BST7 model... Did they fix any issues between the RBBX05 and BST7 that I should be aware of? Or did i come out with the better deal in the end?

I mean the only thing i see about my model is that it has the faster HD, I got the LG screen, and i've already done all the bio's flashing, the BST7 is $150 more and i guess for $50 more i could put the 2 year extended warranty on they system

so does the BST7 only sell with the LG screen and RBBX05 could be either LG or AUO screen? I'm looking into getting the BB version too but thought they only sold the Asus G73JH-RBBX05, but I want to make sure I do get the LG screen.

I've been reading some posts on how the new auo screens look almost as good as the LG ones and its not so much a concern anymore, is this true or is it still night and day between the two?

Not sure my RBBX05 came with an LG, but i'm trying to decide if i should return it for the BST7 or is it not worth the extra $150

If mine had the LG screen I think I would hang on to that one, the BST7 doesn't look like much of an upgrade to justify the price hike. Can anybody confirm that the BTS7 ships with only the LG screen though, I'm not looking forward to having to check every number on the RBBX05 to snag me one with a decent screen

Well it's $150 more like i said, not sure how much the 173 more mhz speed would help my gaming experience.... i could just take what i saved and put it towards a 2 year replacement plan.... but that is only if everything is the same except the cpu speed and HD size... nothing in build quality? GPU pasting quality?

The RBBX05 for $1050 is a pretty good deal as far as the Best Buy variants go. The BST7 has a faster processor (i7 740 vs i7 720) and a bigger (640G vs 500G) but slower (5400 rpm vs 7200 rpm) hard drive; I think those are about the only major differences.

All of the Best Buy variants have come with either the LG or the AUO screen, but newer AUOs have been an improved model which is reported to be as good as the LG. And I really doubt you'll be able to get the BST7 for $1199 - it's gone to $1399 pretty much everywhere.

If what you have works and you're happy with it, hang onto it. Good luck!

So best buy is phasing out the RBBX05 then with the BST7? I'm on the fence on whether to get the G73 from BB right now or wait and see if they get their own version of the g53 when that comes out, also of course to see the new ATI cards this month. So many options!

If your unit is perfect, keep it. You might get lucky, but what if you get a garbage unit with bad pixels or a horrible paste job? Do you want to deal with that, when you have a great unit in front of you?

I would keep the unit you have. What happens if you do get the BST7 for $1199, but it has issues (which is possible), then you're stuck. Besides you got a great deal! The slightly faster processor is not really issue, your PC is overpowered as it is, the bigger hard drive is also slower so you don't want it anyway, wait until black friday and you'll be able to buy a 128gb SSD with the $150 you saved. My vote, keep what you have.

After all the research and searching you did before buying and all the updates that worked great on your current version and you got the LG display I would not temp fate for a slower HD and a marginally faster CPU. The only other difference is the WiMAX built in but that doesn't matter if you're not going to pay for the WiMAX. I'd leave it be and keep your working system.

I had the bb version of the g72 and it was perfect but someone offered to buy it and I saw a user g72gx-a1 with all the features i missed in th bb version. 1080p bluetooth etc, but after selling the bb version the a1 was overheating from day 1. The prior owner added copper and tried to repast but said it had always been too loud. The gpu idled at 75-79c and after 10 minutes of gaming it shot past 100c. It was still under warranty so I took it in. They replaced the thermal paste but still felt the gpu and CPU needed to be replaced. The parts still hadn't arrived after a week so I asked them to put it back together and give it back. The new paste works great and it idles around 55c with low to mid 80s while gaming.

All this to say I should've keep the g72 bb version since it worked with no issues. Luckily I have other computers to play on but 10 days and a few trips back and forth may not have been worth it.

    Cheers,

If you are not 100% satisfied with what you currently have, return it.

If you think you may be 110% satisfied with the upgraded unit for the extra cost, return it.

If you wish to see if you can get some more concessions out of Best Buy with this new additional information, go in and threaten to return it. If you don't like how you're treated in the process, return it (since if you have any problems with the machine you could very easily face the same type of treatment attempting to get it fixed)

And if you do decide to return it and get the other one, and it doesn't meet your desired specifications [wrong screen, etc] exchange it immediately. If the next one isn't up to snuff, exchange it again. If they say anything about it, point them at this forum and explain you're not willing to compromise or take any chances. $1200 is $1200, and as a consumer you have every right to a fully functional machine.

If it were me, I'd take a flash drive with hwmonitor and furmark on it and do a 20 minute burn in right there in the store to verify heat dissipation as well, but that's just me [yes, I know furmark monitors temps on it's own, but I still always run Hwmonitor next to it anyway as an additional check. I HAVE seen discrepancies]

Not all BSTS7 come with LG Screen. I check my hardware ID and mine is an AUO Screen.

How is the quality of the screen? I heard some people saying how they are using a newer AUO display then the old ones which are much better and more comparable to the LG.

He stated that it was new in the box, but they gave it to him for the price of a refurb.

I have the 05 and absolutely love it. No issues in 6 months. Use that extra money to upgrade, or buy the warranty as you stated earlier. If it is working great, accept it and enjoy. It is a great machine if it is problem free. Have fun either way you go.

I say stick with the 05 and use the extra money you saved on a backpack or headset or SSD or RAM. the 05 is a great unit and if you're not having any issues with it, there's no reason to get rid of it. especially considering $1050 is a steal for that rig.

I would say if you have a good machine then keep it. I just went through 8 weeks of crap with BestBuy on my first G73. Do not trust what they tell you , in some stores anyway.
Asus replaced my G73 and it is working great now.

We have someone here on the Base that has the new 7 model , we cannot tell anything between them, speed , the way the screen looks. So I do not think you would gain much by trading or the new one.
But that is up to you. You will just have to look for your self and see if it is worth it.

What kind of warranty do you recommend getting along with the BST7? Looks like it has 1 year parts and labor, not sure if the laptop has many problems though. Upgrading the harddrive to a 320GB 7200RPM won't hurt for an extra $60 anyway.

This might be a little off topic but I see people talking about it here so might as well ask it here without making a new thread. I just got a G73 the other day (RBBX05) and was wondering which of the two screens I have on mine. Or how do I check? Thanks

You have the 1600X900 Res screen, now as to what brand it is we would have to look into the lot yours came from.
I would say it is the same as mine, and I will check mine when I get home and the list I have of types on the machines.
I'll try to post later the types that are in the BB models , but as to mine I really like it.
The viewing angles are not perfect and they are limited , but It doe not bother me.

Click start then right click Computer and select properties.
Click device manager and under monitors dbl click Generic PnP Monitor.
    then click details tab.
use the drop down box under Property and change it to hardware Ids.
