I swear to god, there's a new problem for every month I own this thing...

Has anyone experienced something similar? Fn keys abruptly start taking noticeably longer to respond.

I hear that I have spent more time troubleshooting than gaming. What is your exact model number and have you made any modifications to your system such as a clean install of Windows?
If you do not have an SSD, have you tried Defrag on your machine?

When doing subsequent raising and lowering the volume via Fn key, sometimes it doesn't respond for like 3 to 5 seconds. Same thing for raising and lowering the brightness of the LCD and the keyboard backlight, and for switching profiles in Asus Splendid via the Fn+C.

Mine would not do the function I pressed until I pressed a different function. I.E. I press fn+f6 n nothing happens. So then I press fn+f11 to turn down the volume suddenly it turns the brightness up. I press fn+f12 suddenly the volume turns down. It kept going like that, one step behind. That was with the stock installation. Problem went away when i manually uninstalled the atk and kb drivers and reinstalled.

I would say re-install ATK, it fixed it for me the only time this happened. you could also disable ATKOSD2 at startup which is responsible for the 3D animations and see fi it makes a difference.

    Thanks for the advice,

Jehuty, thanks for clarifying the problem. That's the exact problem I have with my fn keys. When lowering the brightness or turning off the display, the first few levels apply immediately. But after about 4-5 clicks, there's a 5 second delay between the next one.

I tried my hand at removing and reinstalling ATK but it doesn't seem to have done anything. I tried both ATK packages off the G73jh driver download page (as I have lost my CD)

I tried reinstalling w7. Which temporarily solves the problem. Sometime between a fresh install, and backing up my files, the fn keys begin to slow down again.

    I'm running a G73jh-A1.

1 month later, the problem with the fn keys is ongoing. I've formatted, redid my ribbons, changed the harddrives, installed different OS's. Nothing.

This is the last time I buy Asus. Too many times have I been ed in the by this piece of China based company. I will make great effort in censuring this worthless company the next time I'm in the market for hardware.

To everyone on this board. Thank you for all the support you've provided in the past few months. I wish you all the best of luck in trying to hold back your urge to break this laptop's spine in half.

Have you tried contacting ASUS support directly?

During some system intensive tasks the function keys may be delayed, if this issues persists please try contacting support.

You can also try PMing some of the ASUS reps that are present on this forum. Or try to contact someone on the ASUS ROG forum.

I understand you might be frustrated but please know that there are many people that are willing to help you overcome this issue.

Also, please note that ASUS is Taiwanese :)

Prior to the unit I currently, I sent my machine in for RMA 3 times.

I doubt the Asus support staff will ever provide me with advice I haven't already heard.

Given, that if I was doing intensive tasks. I'd be more understanding. But my problems are the result of my machine being completely idle

If you don't mind me asking... where did you purchase your unit from?

ASUS consumer level tech support is outsourced and is mostly worthless. If you purchased your unit from a authorized re-seller you will get much better support.

I will contact my sources tomorrow and see if we can't get this issue resolved for you. I've sold a number of G73 & G74 series laptops and have yet to see this issue. However, I would like to know how it can resolved in case it crops up in the future

In the future when you wish to do a RMA try contacting the original seller and see if they can send the unit to a Authorized repair center. Or check out the nearest location: ASUS Notebook Authorized Service Provider

I will let you know in the morning if I hear anything back from Commercial support :)

    I've heard back from support.

Could you please try using the FN + Key when at the desktop with AERO off?

    Does it still do this?

Let me know which version of the ATK, Chipset and GPU drivers you are using.

    Thanks!

I've had this issue before. I'd hit FN volume up or down and it would take like 3-5 seconds to respond and only move one notch. Could not figure out how to fix it and ended up doing a clean reinstall. Yes, reinstalling ATK didn't fix it. This was one of those things that drove me to a reinstall in the past.

Just reformat/reinstall windows. Don't complain about stability unless you are running on a clean installation with fully updated drivers. It takes at most 2-3 hours to get the system reinstalled and most of your apps back.

If you can avoid it (you have another activation key), I'd highly recommend installing fresh from Windows 7 boot CD (or just skipping that altogether and installing the Windows 8 Consumer Preview which will give you licensed use until next January).
