lol....too funny :D The M18x is waaaaay quiet under full load. Especially compared to the R2. Youtube it!! ;)

Crysis 2 is a poor example of multi-gpu utilization. Both GPU's aren't even under full load with 1.9/Extreme settings. This also goes for the Witcher 2. Everything else is par for the course

The 5870M is so EOL. Crysis Warhead, Crysis 2, Bullet Storm & BC2 bring that card to it's knees with max settings @1920 x 1080 with AA/AF.

    I'd take the R2 blow dryer over a lonely EOL 5870M....lol :D
It's time to upgrade dontcha think? Goodluck running BF3 :p

I bought the G73 a year ago coz I don't have a place to put a desktop in my (parents) house... When I own an house myself, I'm just simple putting a desktop coz it's so way more powerfull & easyier to upgrade :)

But for now... my G73 does the job :) (at least after a lot of tweaking :p)

I was perfectly happy playing Crysis on my G73JH. Sure I couldn't play on ultra, but I got playable frame rates and had fun at High settings.

    Lovely.
I also had a G73JH. Crysis runs okey dokey on it. Nothing to write home about. Definitely not maxed out at 1920 x 1080. During heavy firefights the frame rate slows to a crawl.

As long as you had fun thats all that really matters :) To each, his own.

    lol +1 :p

Well I am able to play all of those games just fine (especially BulletStorm, really?), the 5870m is nothing to scoff at; but I am glad that after two other failed attemps at Alienware you got one your cool with

As for BF3, my 2600k CF 6970s gaming rig will be done by then :D

This thread is 6 pages long, so I read the first post and got this far.

That is pretty much as far as I needed to go to know that the OP just admitted the G73 was a good deal and the M18X is overpriced.

$860 vs $2550 that is almost triple the cost.

And we know that there is no way the M18X has 3x the performance thus it is not a very good price vs performance competitor and thus not a good deal.

Even paying "only" $2039 its still not going to beat the G73 in price vs performance so what is there to brag about here?

Perhaps pretty lights?, and here I thought disco was dead.

    Oh, so incorrect.

As for the alienware e-peen... well, if you've got 2k to drop on a laptop that performs as well as a $800 desktop every 2 years, good on ya. I got my g73 because I wanted a portable-ish computer that had FHD and would game for 2-3 years, with an equally long warranty. Maybe today I'd have bought an alienware instead, but at the time, asus had the best power/price ratio at the top end of the spectrum.

But let's face it, calling the 5870m EOL and calling it worthless aren't the same thing.

  im jealous. me want. :p Especially for BF3.

    The post quoted above is a good example of why it is recommended for people to actually read the entire threads before posting. If you would have bothered to read at least all my others posts you would have learned that ;

1.I only created this thread on a whim due to 'temporary' excitement due to the $500+ savings
2.I learned quickly that the m18x performance improvement compared to g73jh ISN'T worth the price
3.I didn't go through (and probably wont ever) with the purchase.

So please do read first next time.

But see thats why I stated I only read the first post so you would know where I am coming from and also there is a way to edit a post to add important details so you dont cause a misleading thread.

At any rate what I stated still stands true informed statement or not.

    All this bickering is pointless.
If you think your rig is awesome and worth the money then great. There's always going to be someone who disagrees and thinks that something else is better or a greater value.
To each their own. Nuff said... But let me go on anyway!
Some would say that an AW m18x is too expensive compared to an Asus G73 and that may be true, but wait, can't you turn around and build a good desktop rig for less than the Asus. Now that's another good point, but hold on a sec, can't you just get a game console for even less? Too true... but why waste your time and money playing video games anyway. Aren't there more important things to do? And why be a geek and spend your time reading and posting on a forum about laptop? There are plenty of people who would be happy if they could afford to buy A Computer. lol
Anyway... let me offer some reasons why it would be good idea to get a m18x and get it now.
There are a few games out there that are barely playable on the G73 with with max settings at FHD. It's only a few but there probably more to come in the near future. As a matter of fact the performance of xfire 6970m is theoretically almost three times the performance of a single 5870m, though it may be closer to 2.5. The fact that you don't see that in The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2 with max DX11 settings is because all current hardware takes a huge hit from certain DX11 features such as tessellation. Performance in these games will almost certainly improve with driver updates.

So why should you jump on this deal now? Well, the upgrade to 6970m Xfire on the m18x is very cheap right now. It's basically the equivalent of a single 6970m mxm card if you bought it by itself online. The price of the m18x with just the 6970m upgrade is very reasonable when you compare it to
something like the G74. It's only when you do begin to max out components such as xm CPU,SSDs, and warranty terms that it becomes hugely expensive.
However, even if you do decide to get the expensive upgrades then what you can do is take advantage of the great savings and if something better comes out from AW within 30 days then you just return it and get the better model.
When you do get a model that you're satisfied with you can keep it until Dell comes out with another top of the line replacement. When this happens you can sell yours for about the same price that paid given the excellent discount. You can then get the new model with another big discount and basically pay little or nothing beyond the money you got from the sale. You can keep doing that every year for as long as you care to own a new gaming laptop and pay about what other people would pay for upgrades and accessories for their current laptop!

Just in defense of our beloved G73s. Last weekend a friend of mine show his new m17x (corei7 2nd generation, 460m etc) and I must say the screen sucks. Compared to our g73, in the m17x screen the colors are washed and is not so bright and has less contrasts than the g73. I'll stick with my g73 for a while.

Now this I agree is true. The screen is nowhere near as good as the one in my G73 and they both pale next to my iMac. Even so, the M17x-R3 is the most versatile system I've ever owned. With mini-displayport, HDMI and VGA outputs and HDMI input you can connect it to a 2010 iMac or MBP (b4 thunderbolt) and use the Mac screen as an additional screen or connect your PS3 to the M17x for a quick gaming session away from home or in a room w/o a TV. Or watch HDMI cable box right on the laptop display.

The only drawbacks beside the screen (which I only noticed when sitting side by side with my other systems) are the hard to reach interior ram modules and ODD.

    Cheers,

This thread will only encourage bickering, so I am closing it.

OP, Congrats on finding a notebook that is more suited for you. Remember that people have different needs and wants(why there isn't just one notebook for everyone).
