This is my first laptop from Asus and probably the most expensive one I have ever had as well. i thought the sound quality of this machine would be really great as it has got something called Creative THX whatever it called. even the built in microphone is damn poor. when i was talking over the skype with my friend they barely heard me. I checked with Mic setting. setting was alright. I am really frustrated with it and also it makes continuous sound coming from fan or may be hdd. compare to this one my previous hp was with great sound quality and noiseless machine.

Sadly Asus never was great for the sound I remember on my JH even with every setting tweaked the sound was poor. Laptop sound in general is not great I have 5.1 on my Clevo 5 speakers and a sub and with THX running it is not as good as it should be. The difference being HP has the Beats audio system they focus more on their Audio and less on the GPU performance.

For a laptop, the G-series has excellent speakers, IMO. Obviously headphones or good external speakers are infinitely better, but I was quite pleased with the sound.

The mic, on the other hand, is useless. I bought headphones with a mic for this very reason. It echoes, and generally sounds like you're underwater. Nothing you can do. Fortunately, mics aren't that expensive.

Yes Mic sounds exactly like what [email protected] said. guys you are not talking about the noise. what do you think about the continuous sound coming out from the machine? also touchpad scrolling is poor too. i am thinking to update to a generic driver. did anyone try about it?

These new G series machines seem quiet for gaming laptops actually. The laptop is a bit louder than most when in a resting state, but whats amazing is that it really doesnt get too much louder than that, even when under load. Pretty much every other gaming laptop and even desktop I have seen becomes 2 or 3 times louder under load than these laptops. Im sorry that you feel this way about the mic. I completely agree that the sound is bad. Unacceptably bad.

My previous asus laptop, the N80, had dolby built in and the sound quality was amazing as long as I plugged in speakers or headphones. I pretty much have the 17 inch version of your laptop and I was appalled at how bad the sound was. Music was flat and sound effects in games like battlefield were just total crap. I never did give the mic a chance since I have one on my headphones.

In any case, I went out and bought an Asus Xonar U3 and that pretty much solved all my problems with the sound. It is a small 2x1x0.5inch external USB soundcard that goes for around 30-40$. The little thing made a world of difference. Music sounds amazing, with rich bass and all, and battlefield's sound is suddenly more convincing than even the graphics. If you find the mic to be terrible, you can always get one of those stand-up mics for 10$, they actually work every well, and wont pick up the sound from your laptop's HDD an fans.

The worst part about all of this is that asus makes both of these peripherals and sell them at a relatively negligible prices, yet they are too cheap to integrate hardware of the same quality into their 1500$ computers :/

Thanks freelancer604. I never know such kind of thing (Asus Xonar U3) exist. i'll check it out here in the UK but of course it will be more expensive than the US. But i m still wondering if it will be really worth spending around 42 pounds.

Agreed on the previous Asus models being better for sound I remember my G70S with 4 built in Lansec speakers, that thing pumped out some serious bass! :( such a shame it sucked apart from that.

Well, how much value you get out of your XonarU3 would be dependent on the quality of your headphones or speakers I think.

If you plan on just using the laptop's built in speakers or a pair of 10$ earbuds, then dont buy the Xonar. Actually.. the xonar is output only, so it doesnt even work with the laptop's built-in speakers. The way I see it, the Xonar U3 is best used with headphones. Even if your headphones are standard 4-channel, the Xonar can simulate 7.1 surround sound. That is probably it's greatest feature..Its really convincing. I found myself taking off my headphones a few times at first.. because it fooled me into thinking I was accidentally flooding the apartment with sound from my speakers at 2am.

I have a pair of Sony DR-GA200 headphones that are only worth about $100 (I got them on sale for 50$ :D) and the difference the xonar makes for those is huge! It took a bit of tinkering to get the Xonar settings just the way I like, but once I did I found it to be totally worth the price. $40 does seem pricy for something that most people dont value (sound), but it makes enough of a difference that once you experience it, youll never want to go back.

Oh, before deciding to get it, you should know that the Xonar does not feed the sound back into the laptop before sending it to your speakers. This just means that if you often do in-game video recording with Fraps for a youtube gaming channel or something, no sound will be recorded.

asus xonar u3 usb 2.0 sound card is still not very clear to me. what i want is to increase my multimedia sound for laptop not for the headphone, i am happy with headphone sound quality.
when i have reinstalled my OS, after installing sound card driver (Realtek HD) i have seen in speakers properties- under the Enhancements tab- there were few options to select from. i don't know why i can't see them anymore. i can see only Loudness Equalization. and even apply button is disabled when i select this option. could it be because of that crappy THX?

The reason it sounded muddy when using the built-in speakers in G73 was probably because some of the bass went onto the small speakers and it distorted the mid range sounds, you can relocate the amount of bass sent to the subwoofer using the modded X-Fi driver for G73 and enable the bass boost. So far the decent bass boost setting I have been using is 2.5dB on the level and 175Hz on the Cutoff Frequency, it does sound different which goes towards crisp and the reduction of the muddy sounding.
