Maybe I'm missing something here, but didn't we all switch to SSDs because of their speed and lack of moving parts, hence limiting mechanical failures?

Why are we obsessing about limiting READ/WRITES and keeping files off the drive?

The latest drivers and firmware from Intel for their SSDs automated the TRIM CMD in Windows 7. I agree the pagefile may be redundant with a massive amount of RAM, but what is the point of an 80GB or 160GB SSD just to spend so much effort keeping data below 20GB on the drive?

It seems that consumer SSDs have developed a considerable amount of myth in their short lifespan, and I didn't think an advance in hard drive technology should require this much maintenance. I mean, are the 160GB SSDs technologically the same as the write-endurance limited flash technology of the 1990's?

    You make some great points:
I found this on the intel site: ( Intel® Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives - Overview)
and this is an exerpt from the link.
Life expectancy 1.2 million hours Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF)
I too am not real worried, I backup regularly and have a spare 500 GIG HD just in case. I did read one article that stated you should not go above 80% full on an SSD.
BTW BKoolReturns, I heard the Cray computers are down at NASA, and they are looking to borrow your machine for the next few weeks!

    You're forgetting some points:

    1. Limited HD space.
    2. Pagefile is done in the background, so it isn't going to improve the pagefile's performance to put it on the main OS/SSD drive.
    3. No one's obsessing (that I see) about keeping it down to 20gb, but with the expense and premium of SSD in $/gb, people want to get the most bang for their buck.

Correctamundo! If we had a cheap 500 GB SSD, no one would give a rat's @$$. It's all about the expensitude and tiny size of the SSD's that are making us ever so careful about what we put on it. :D

All my games, downloads, and media are on my 320GB.

@JOSEA: hahaha I never wanted to worry about RAM again :D

@AramiS: I understand the $/gb premium on the SSD, but its not like we are paying that premium every time we use the drive. hell, we already bought it. That being said, I do limit the number of programs I keep on the SSD because of the capacity limitations.

Well this thread has been dead for a minute, but those still interested in comprehensive answers, check out this link: The SSD Anthology. It pretty much explains everything.
