i've been playing fallout 3 with my gpu OC'd (750MHz) and the temp would go up to 75.... over the weekend i purchased fallout 3 from steam and besides the constant crashing it seemed to be under performing and the temp wouldn't pass 79... i decided to try other games on steam and realized that there is no performance increase when I OC and no temps above 80.... any ideas?

Uhm... my Steam games operate as expected when I overclock the nvidia's.

Try an 800 OC and see if it's noticeable.

Fallout 3 is not really a demanding game for the 460M, same as with New Vegas. Both games could be played in full ultra setting (4x AA, 15X Anistrophic, 1080p) on Stock clocks (675/1250).

I'm not gonna argue on who's got better, but I'll post 2 screenshots with FPS of Fallout 3 on full ultra, 1080p. One on stock clock, other at 775/1250. Should be viewed at 100% browser zoom, pics gets stretched after upload and lose detail...

If something's a miss, check OS integrity.. By the way, I do have the actual game disc. I also don't use any cooler pad. Fallout 3 registers 75*C max GPU temp after 4 hrs. of straight gaming.

    @ thief1958:

i know the stock clocks can run fallout 3 maxed out but not with 60 fps all throughout. For example, when playing in buildings it will probably run at a smooth 60 fps unless you encounter steam or heavy dust, but out in wasteland where there is a bunch of buildings in the distance I usually get around 45 fps, when OC'd i get around 55.. also I think ur g73 will run cooler than my g53

Edit: I've tried at 775/1250 and it is from 60-55 fps. On the open wasteland it can dip to 45-47, but still mostly 60-55. Inside buildings is 60-55 fps. It's not lagging perse 'till you hit 25-29 fps which you don't.

The map is so wide, Bethesda did a good job for the 460M to handle this map at good frame rates, at max ultra setting, 1080p. There's no problem really..

Ok. I did the 800 OC and I took some screenshots:

Your G73 should run cooler than my g53 and its not only with fallout; I re-installed metro 2day just to check i was playing with dx11 and the whole works but performance didn't seem any better and my temp was atuck at 79, same with black ops

And as I said b4 I had a non-steam fallout which played well at 800 clocks with 55 fps in the wasteland at ultra settings. This steam version is ALWAYS CRASHING and idk y  ...

and to show its only steam, i played burnout at 1080p with ssao and had good fps with 84 degrees

Let me wedge in here for a sec and drop this link on your thread: TweakGuides.com - Fallout 3 Tweak Guide

You also might want to give gamebooster 3 beta 2 a try. Maybe it will kill some of your less important services and processes and save you the fps you're looking for.

As for steam not liking your OC, I've never run into that problem before at all. I also have Fallout 3 for Steam and it crashed every ten minutes if I was overclocking, but that's just because Bethesda hates AMD drivers. As soon as I stopped oc'ing, no crashing at all, ever. Try some stuff from that tweak guide and you may surprise yourself how much more fps you can glean out of your game.
