I just received my laptop back from Asus RMA (2nd time) due to defective LCD screens. This screen is a lot better and only has one small spot with uneven back lighting (previous screen had like 4 to 5 spots) which I am content with.

However, I just noticed that a distorted screen appears whenever I reboot the laptop which I've tested several times now. This screen does not appear during a cold boot. It disappears after 2-3 seconds but I'm just concerned that this could be a sign of a larger problem.

    Here is a pic:

Anyone know what this is? I have the latest bios 213 and am using the modified chastity vbios (012.020.000.032.0383.G730) along w/ Cat 11.5.

I've been using the laptop more and have encountered additional distorted screens upon LCD monitor wake-up (it's setup to turn off after 20 mins) and once during gaming (League of Legends) when the game booted into a loading screen. The distorted screen lasted for about 2-3 seconds each time.

During the RMA, I requested that they repaste the GPU with thermal compound. Do you guys think its a bad lcd connection/cable? I have never taken the laptop apart so I'm not sure what to look for. I'm really hoping this isn't another defective LCD...Don't want to do a 3rd RMA in a month.

    Any help/suggestions would be great!

Hanky, I can see the pic now -

IF you have an external monitor connected, do you have the same issue?

    Fixed the link. Thanks.

Just tested with an external monitor connected via HDMI out. Upon LCD wake-up, the LCD will display the distorted screen first and then the video will output to the external monitor. Seems like the distorted screen is triggered whenever the video source is changing state (e.g., from windows to dos or upon lcd wake-up).

I added a picture to my gallery of the screen distortion upon lcd wake-up. It basically looks like the PSOD I had before my first RMA but that was permanent whereas this only lasts 2-3 seconds.

That distorted screen was BIOS though. Try restarting leaving the VGA cable in. The BIOS will show on the external display instantly as well as the LCD, compare the two for distortion.

If you're testing on wake-up then Windows might be being funny about deciding which screen to use etc.

Just tested w/ a VGA cable in with same results. The bios boot screen will only appear on the LCD (and is distorted). Video doesn't display on the external monitor until the windows 7 loading screen.

I then tried resetting again but hit F2 to enter the bios this time. After hitting F2, the video of the bios setup screen displayed on both the LCD and external monitor just fine.

Playing around w/ the display settings between "extend" and "duplicate" in windows 7 would also trigger the strange distorted screen on the LCD.

That "strange distorted screen" appears to be a PSOD like condition. Now whether it's being caused by a bad lcd cable connection, or a bad panel/video circuit/video card, I don't know. What I do know is that it's hardware and you should have it checked.

Sigh...do you recommend I set-up another RMA? Now I fully know what people are talking about when they say they've entered Asus RMA hell.
