Hello guys,
I wonder if swapping the GTX460M with a HD5870 in a G73JW is possible. Similar wattage and heat sink too but I'm not sure if the port is the same. So has anyone tried this crazy idea before?
-
-
No its impossible because the heat sink is different on the G73JW AND on G73JH !!
-
Really? I guess can try swapping the heatsink too then
-
Not impossible but inpracticle the cost that your facing along with the possible issues and then you will have to change the BIOS/Vbios along with changing the heatsink.
Not worth the increase in power between the GTX and 5870 tbh. Just buy a JH.
-
No, the GPU slot had to be moved because the 460M is twice the size of the 5870M. So that won't work either. Just buy a JH. You can sell your JW and buy a JH or you can make a trade.
-
Ew why would you want to swap those anyway
-
Performance? Preference? Fear (of having the GPU die 2 years in, like most nvidia gpus)?
-
QFT.
You obviously haven't heard of any NVIDIA GPU's outside of the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M, and 8600M. I feel sorry about that. Maybe someday you'll see what an amazing company NVIDIA truly is. -
Oy Oy nothing wrong with the 8 series my 8700M GT SLI with the G84 core ran at 95oC solid for 2 years and I still made a profit on it when I sold it!
-
But you can buy the G73JH heatsink !
-
Which means squat because the MXM slot was MOVED!!! The 460M is inserted into the motherboard horizontally, the 5870M is inserted into the G73jh vertically. So if you use a G73jh heatsink on a G73jw motherboard? Use your brain!

Both companies are cool with their own problems. I had an Nvidia card and it still rocks till now. I had ATI card and it went well until obsolete. But about the topic swapping those cards it will be so much of a hassle. Performance wise, you may not feel the difference.
-
Actually, I prefer nvidia over ATi, all my ATI cards run hot and loud, and all my nvidia cards fail eventually. Since I replace my desktop cards relatively frequently, having the nvidia cards die in 2-3 years isn't a big deal for me... but it is for some people.
I generally don't go in for discrete cards in my laptops, so I'm basing my opinions on their desktop lines. -
I was thinking that having the ability to use both cards in 1 laptop would be cool, but if the port lay out is to insert vertically for JH then yea guess it's out of luck.
-
At the end of the day you just have to look at the benefits the 460 GTX has over the 5870M for example......................hmmm well....................
-
I have to admit, I'm totally ok with a performance hit for the lower temps. Even in a 86f room, I havent seen the GPU go past 73c in games like GTA4 and other GPU intensive games.
I get a much smoother frame rate than when I had the JH in a lot of games, prolly more so from the SB CPU, either way, the temps alone makes me more than happy with having a GTX460m. -
Except that the newer revisions of the ATI card run almost as cool...
-
Im totally the opposite to be honest I think if its not hot make it hot and I will overclock and drain every last drop of power out of the GPU at the expense of extra heat. At the end of the day I wont have this laptop for longer than 2 years anyway and the GTX 460 will be out of date and struggle on high before the SB that you have in it will be.
Although with 825/1100 ATI clocks I still only get 74oC gaming and 82oC extreme burn so it makes no difference over here. -
The difference between extreme burn w/ 8x AA and displacement mapping and just regular furmark (no options) for me is like 14C. Which means when gaming I usually top out at 85.
-
However what DCx is not telling you is that he is a secretely going to repaste with IC7 and will join the 14oC lower fan club quite soon.
Swapping a GTX460M with a mobility HD5870?
