Kind of a generic performance question but I was wondering how the game performs for some of you G73 folk. I was hanging with a buddy last night playing some TF2 and while my desktop runs it silky smooth with everything maxed out. (Q9550, 4870X2, etc) my laptop left me feeling like something was being bottlenecked somewhere. While the settings are maxed out, I feel like the framerate dips way too much in certain times of action that it really should not. Seeing how the 5870M is about on par with a desktop 4870, I would have expected the game to run silky smooth no matter what came on screen. Soo I was wondering if a few of you who play could say if you are getting smooth silky performance or also feel like its a slight bit bogged at times (not unplayable in any form). Being how I play SC2 maxed out on High perfectly fine, I am curious if the Source engine being a bit more CPU based is limited to the 1.6Ghz speed of the CPU more.

Just curious for input on how it performs on other systems for now. If things turn out to be a glitch on my end (like I feel it may be, need to do some digging) then I may ask for some technical input and comparison.

Yes. The difference between FPS lag and Latency Lag is easy to identify.

I still need to run some more test and throw up a FPS counter to see how much this drop appears to be.

Just curious for info before I get home to tinker with it after work.

I was expecting to play TF2 at least maxed with 4X AA but last night felt like that may be asking a bit much... Or is it?

Played 2 nights ago. Had the FPS counter on. Everything maxed, 8X AA and never dropped below 85fps. use net_graph 1 in Tf2 to see your FPS. The 5870 can tear Tf2 apart. I was on 32 player servers.

This is what I like to hear... 85Fps huh. You do have the 1080p monitor correct? Not the BB model? And thanks for the heads up on the ingame fps counter, used that in CS back in the day and forgot it.

G73JH tears TF2 apart, maxed out you can easily stay at 85+ fps at full 1080 resolutions.

Have you set your rates properly? cl_cmdrate 101, cl_updaterate 101, rate 25000. Plenty of other settings you can play with as well. Probably has a lot to do with that, runs flawlessly on my end.

Ok so with net_graph on I am getting around 50 average with dips to 30's and up to about 60's. So something definitely not 100% here.. Going to tweak some drivers. What driver version are all you using?

Update: Just swapped back to the 10.7 Beta drivers from the 10.9a drivers and the framerate may be a tad better but still 40-60's on badwater. Need to keep looking...

I do have the BB model but am using the 10.8's. 1600x900, everything at max at 8X AA. No less then 85 fps. That was my lowest. Average I would say is about 120-140fps. (I am glad I got the BB version because I have a beast desktop and there is no way a 5870m can handle most games at 1080p with 8x AA. LOWER SCREEN RES FTW LOL!)

Yes the lesser res would do a bit better for FPS... But in most games you don't need any AA at 1080P since the res is so sharp. :p

Still the res difference should not = 1/2 the FPS in TF2.. Chastity mentioned disabling the CCC AI or/and installing the 10.9 Crossfire Profiles (which I left out seeing how we don't use crossfire, but also forgot that they add more to the game settings than just enabling or disabling crossfire.)

I never really found the need to go over 4x MSAA myself.

I will say that a difference in AA does not seam to change the min fps very much. You still see it drop to the 30's at times with it off.

K you guys saying 85+ Must all be using the 1600X900 res. I just tried it at that and it did run at 85+ exactly like you guys said. From 85-100ish..

Bah. I can handle a little less with the beauty 1920X1080 brings.

Yeah I said it was the BB 1600x900 screen. I was really on the fence on both these screens and I ended up opting to save the 500 bucks and get the lesser screen and one less hard drive. For me, that res looks great and it will future proof the machine more as I ONLY use it for games. I have a 2x hex core Xeon desktop for the heavy lifting or crazy games that I NEED to see at 1920x1200 :)

I'm at 1080p personally. Hmmm I'll give it a shot again tonight and report back, I haven't tried TF2 with my 10.8 drivers.

Hey there. Just played it again last night. First of all, I'd like to say, that I used to play on 640x480, with high FPS configs, that resulted in all the models to look like squares. So to play this game on 1080p with 100+ fps brought a tear to my eye :). What I found was that I averaged around 200+ fps in the ready rooms / any closed spaces. In heavy battles my FPS ranged anywhere from 120-75 (I'm clocked at 800/1100). The one thing I found that did drop my FPS below 75 were the Engie remote controlled turrets. The red marker around them seemed to really suck the FPS out, with 2+ of them on the screen I'd get around 50 FPS average (32 player server). So perhaps if you're an Engineer, this would be the reason you're getting lower than 80 FPS. On average, I'd say I ran the entire game for an hour at around 100+ fps. You can try my config that I uploaded and see if it helps. Found in: D:\Steam\steamapps\[email protected]\team fortress 2\tf\cfg. Make sure you change it to a .cfg format.
