Trying to figure out what to do about my temperature problems. At stock clocks (underclocks), I hit 100C+ in under 30 seconds when using Furmark Extreme Burning Mode for Stability Test. Earlier, I also hit 109C when playing BC2/Global Agenda under stock clocks, I cleaned out the fan and the temps seemed to drop a bit, at least for a while, but still... :(

If I completely underclock it (125/199/312), it seems to max out at about 81C after about a minute. This is quite a bit better, but horrible considering what low clocks it is.

This is all while using a cooler and having the laptop propped up.

I think it is time for me to try a cooling mod. However, it seems that the estore is still out of replacement backplates. :( (I can't find any other vendors).
    G50V-1A CPU DOOR SUB ASSY

I'd like to cut a hole in that "fake-circle-vent".

Also, my G51vx-rx05 is a refurb, does this mean there is no guarantee? If that is the case, then I don't care about getting a replacement backplate. And if there is a guarantee, how long does it last? (2 years from the day I purchased it? Or what?)

Also, what tape/paste, should I use if I decide to try the copper mod?

    Thanks in advance!

With temperatures like that, my first guess would be problems with the interface between the GPU and heatsink, or the fan itself. The first thing I would look at is bad paste on the GPU. What are you getting at idle?

By the way, 100C after 30 minutes of furmark isn't completely abnormal for a stock G51vx. As for warranty, I don't know. Refurbished units have funky warranties.

Refurb notebooks from Asus usually carry a 3 month warranty.

The copper blocks should already have an adhesive layer on bottom which can be directly applied to the GPU ram modules, so no need for tape/paste here.

Since you're already having to disassemble your laptop, you may also want to replace the stock TIM with ICD7 or Sin Etsu MicroSi G751 thermal paste as these are proven to yield lower temps compared to stock TIMs.

The copper mod is meant to place the blocks on the heatpipe, not the GPU components themselves. They soak up heat and give more surface area for heat dissipation. Also, the stock tape they usually come with is garbage. I scraped mine off and used Sekisui.

My mistake :p I meant to say heatpipe ><

As for the stock adhesive, I'll take your word for it as I've never performed this mod before, hence you're surely more qualified than me in this department :)

Thanks for the replies. I hit 100C after 30 seconds. I don't even wanna think about 30 minutes. :D

Idle at stock clocks + cooler was around 75C+ as I recall.

Seeing as its already been 6 months or so, I guess I can go ahead and mod my backplate without waiting for the backplates to come in stock?

I assume I can get Sekisui online? I'm completely new to modding hardware, and I'm not sure where to start. I just know I need to do something. :D

Also, Forge, in your post, you say that you used 10x9x4mm blocks ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/414147-grab-copper-drill-now-2.html#post5269666), but the link shows only 13x12x4 ( Copper Heat Sink For DDR DDR2 DDR3 RAM Memory RHS-03 - eBay (item 250395770859 end time Jun-18-10 04:07:12 PDT).

Think these blocks would work? Copper Cooler Heatsink DDR DDR2 DDR3 RAM Memory RHS-03 - eBay (item 350358184775 end time May-29-10 01:16:22 PDT)

How hard is scrapping off and replacing the tape from the blocks? And where can I get decent tape without breaking my bank?

Thanks for putting up with me. :D I just know I need to do something about my temps. :(

I was getting 103 in FurMark, took it into the shop and they replaced the stock paste with a CoolerMaster paste, FurMark temps max out at 90 now

You can check your fan speed in everest's sensor page or maybe speedfan

MX3 is also very good thermal paste

So its possible I just got a poor application of paste/tape?

How much did it cost to take into a shop and what kind was it? (Geek Squad type?)

By adding the copper mod, will that affect any shop's ability to reapply paste/tape if I want to get it done by them?

    Oh. Whups. Read something wrong.

Too high. It's either a bad paste job or your GPU isn't downclocking properly. For reference, with an underclocked/undervolted GPU and running on my Zalman NC2000 I'll usually stay around low 40s on the GPU.

Definitely. Having no warranty gives you incredible freedom.

The easiest and most effective hardware mod would be to replace your thermal paste. Look at the G50 Disassembly Guide. The G51vx looks practically the same.

Use ArtiClean to cleanse the GPU and CPU die, spread a nice thin layer of paste (well, make it a little thick on the GPU die) and smoosh the heatsink back down. Voila.

    Those'll work just fine.

I see you've already gotten the Sekisui. As for removing the stock tape, I just used my fingers and fingernails. You can use some solvent like Articlean to help it. Afterwards, sanderpaper it so you know it's completely level.

By the way, do the paste yourself. No need spend the extra money for someone to apply it for you.

    Thanks for the awesome reply.

What paste would you recommend for replacing the stock paste? (Cheaper the better)

    :D

    EDIT:
    Ordered:
    Artic Silver 5
    Copper Heat Sinks
    Sekisui Thermal Tape

    Need to:
    Drill holes in Fake Vent
Drill extra holes near GPU vents
Reapply thermal paste to CPU and GPU
Place the Copper Heat sinks on with the Sekisui Tape

We'll see how this goes. :D

Just waiting on the copper blocks now. I'm most worried about reapplying the thermal paste; as long as I follow that disassembly guide I should be fine right?

How do I clean the old paste off of the GPU and CPU? Water is a nono, correct?
I don't need to put much paste on do I? Can I use the back of a knife to scrape off the old paste and apply a think layer of the new one?

Sorry for all the questions. Wanna make sure I do it right. :D

Use a solvent like high concentration alcohol or something like ArtiClean to cleanse the dies. You must clean off the CPU and GPU dies thoroughly.

Just put on some solvent and wipe down with a paper towl. Make sure you don't leave fibers behind.

As for applying the paste, I personally use a putty knife, but I hear playing cards or razors work just fine, too.

Finished part of the mod. Put on the Artic Silver paste and added two copper blocks (I'll put the rest on later).

Good news, I didn't hit 100C after 30 seconds in Furmark. :D Bad news, still not low enough. I'm currently testing temps with the backplate off, and I hit 101C after 1 minute 30 seconds in Furmark Extreme Burning Mode (I didn't have my laptop propped up this time and no cooler either - last time I hit 100C in 30 seconds WITH my cooler on). :D GPU dropped right back down to 74C about 30 seconds after I closed Furmark.

Not sure what my ambient temperatures were/are. Need to drill holes in my backplate, add the rest of the copper blocks and put the backplate back on before I know how this really went.

Thanks for your help! Wow. Now my GPU is at 69C. Much better idling temp than before and the paste has even really set. CPU maxed at 51C during the Furmark gpu test, but with Orthos on for one minute and 30 seconds I hit 70C. :(

(Writing this as I'm testing temps. Wanted to do it without the backplate on in case I needed to reapply the paste in-case I did it wrong (first time :D ).

Oh, by the way, this is what happens if you spread Artic Silver 5 too thin: it doesn't contact the heatsink fully.

Lose the AS5 and cough up the money for Arctic Silver Matrix or Arctic Cooling MX-2 or MX-3.

I am currently having this 108c problem myself and I am thinking of doing some mods now as I have broken my warrenty by applying AS5 for a fix. I didn't wanna rma since i have heard the horror stories from those that have waited 3 months to get their lappy back. I would loose my mind with out my computer for over a month.

RMA depends on where you live. I RMA'd my friend's G50vt--it used to be mine and was registered under my name--and the whole process took about a week from sending it out to receiving it back. The Fremont, CA service depot is awesome.

I broke the seal on the procs sticky..I did that by messing with the ram cuz i was at one time thinking I was having ram issues.. They won't believe me on that so there for I have already killed RMA by applying AS5 on all things (including what I think is the south or north bridge.)

I have no choice but to fix it myself or to find a place that is really good at what they do and doesn't charge an arm or a leg.
