The more I look at the G73, the more it appeals. The video card: HD 5870 mobile, Is it going to be replace soon or is it the end of this generation in the series? (similar to the gtx 260/285m) Can you guys describe the quality and materials of the laptop?

Also I'm a huge fan of sager/clevo. The material aluminium seems better than plastic? I like bragging rights knowing that my video card the will last until next generation.

If you have any level of intelligence, that information is not difficult to find in this forum.

True, but not very helpful to the OP.

The problem with this forum and the way the threads are organized. Huge, ridiculously long threads containing multiple topics are very hard to parse for info and I personally find the search functions here to be less than capable, returning a massive amount of hits w/o any indication as to which words a particular post contained.

I prefer the layout of http://forums.macrumors.com/index.php with individual threads for each topic.

True, the OP could find what he/she wants by reading 900 screens of messages or by learning how to refine search criteria buy a little reorganization would make it easier to find what you're looking for.

To the OP: The 5870 is the current top of the line. The Matte black case is ok and a bit bulky but such is the price you pay for great components i7 & ATI 5870 and outstanding cooling. My prior Mac and Sony laptops may have looked better but they use much weaker components in those stylish cases! If you enjoy games the G73 is an outstanding system at a great price.

    Cheers,

Well I know the 5870 is top of the line currently, but I want to know if this is just "high-performance" and NOT "enthusiast" level card which ati haven't announce yet.

no, it's the top for the forseeable future. I've heard of no announcements for new mobile GPUs from ATI.

It might plausibly be the best in town for the Ati 5k series. But once the mobile fermie hits the scene I'm sure we will see something stronger from ati but that's just how mobile computing works.... cream of the crop for 3 months and outdated rubbish in 8....

And I'm sure there will be some g73 refresh with all the missing ports eventually. But hey if you don't need a express card port why not get it now. CPU, and gpu can't get mug better anytime soon. Not for the price range anyways.

It's the current king of single core GPU, so I don't know if you would classify this as high performance or enthusiast, because I don't know what do you classify as enthusiast, does having the best mobile card currently in the world count? Or do you need to modify your own desktop fermi into mobile to count as enthusiast.

Read any of the threads about the g73 ... not ALL of the posts, just the first 10 or so from each.

But, since you'd rather others do your work for you, I'll bite: Its nice. The material looks like an older thinkpad, and the design actually looks quite nice in person (compared to the press shots). It isn't as sturdy as a thinkpad, but much nicer than most of the other consumer laptops I've owned. Seems sturdy enough, and the laptop is quite zippy *and* cool.

I havn't had a clevo, so I can't compare to that... but it seems as sturdy as a MBP, even though it isn't brushed aluminum. It doesn't seem as solid as a thinkpad, but it does seem close.
