I am posting this tread to help address some of the confusion that is plaguing the G73JH Bestbuy models concerning the display.
Through out posts here and abroad, I have read about the lack of contrast & poor viewing angles on the Bestbuy models.
So far I know of 2 displays that ship with the G73JH(Bestbuy models).
**This is based on my PERSONAL observations of both display(screen) models **
The AUO B173RW01 & LG LP173WD1-TLC1.
I have owned both models. I currently own the LG LP173WD1-TLC1.
The AUO B173RW01 has awful contrast & poor viewing angles. It also at times has a problem properly diplaying bright backgrounds in games making the image seem washed out with brightness. I do not recommend this screen.
The LG LP173WD1-TLC1 has decent viewing angles for a laptop display and has great contrast.
I don't believe there is a way to tell from the serial on the box what model your are getting at time of purchase.
In a different thread Plazmic suggested using hwinfo to determine what model of display is on the G73JH in question. I would also agree to this method for obtaining the display's manufacturer/model number.
Here's a link to my pics of the LG display. Keep in mind that my camera sucks for pics like this at the moment. But you should be able to get an idea of the LG's screen characteristics.

lol....this isn't where I was going with it, but since you mentioned it...what do ya think?
But on a more serious note....I'm sick of people talking about how bad the G73JH(BBY) models display is when there's different display's sold at random and my LG looks fantastic. -

Thanks Grammar Policia
...I'm up late and my eyes are starting to burn.
Your attention to detail is scary. That same attention leads me to think that your RMA might be a little unnecessary. -
Thank you for this thread. It helps explain the widely varying reports of screen quality.
Now if only we can figure out how to spot the difference on the box with a batch number or something. -

No problem. If I gather any more info in person or on the forums I will let you know asap.
lol....no...I'm just kidding. Even though you breifly got on my nerves....I still wouldn't wish Asus RMA on another Asus owner. I've had bad experiences with them. Fortunately, I bought my G73JH at Bestbuy with Black Tie Warranty so I can just deal with them here locally. They always replace my units or give me store credit in the past
You'll most likely get a brand new unit from Asus RMA.
I wish you the best

what the balls happened to your screen Tailend? On one of your screenies it almost looks like a crack behind the screen... that looks very odd. So you didnt even have a best buy G73?
-
skygunner27 A Genuine Child of Zion
It's a good thing he has that 1 year accidental warranty...judging from those pics. Because Bestbuy would be like w.t.f.? -
Those are the leaves from the windows 7 default wallpaper, I think he just got a bad LCD.
-
Well, not that this helps or is of any use, BUT:
I have had two Best Buy G73's
The first had all brand logo stickers on the right side of the palm rest, 204 bios, 1066Ram, and had the LG screen.
The current one had all the brand logo stickers on the left side of the palmrest, 205 bios, 1333Ram, and has the other AO screen.
And, yep, I'd agree, the LG screen is noticeably better, both in colors and all around appearance. The AO screen is totally fine and won't bother me, but having had both, it is not quite as good/bad ha depending how you look at it.
But, this G73 works just fine so far, no issues, and the one with the LG screen had a dead left speaker and terrible keyboard. -

I'm glad that you have a G73 that works like it should. I have the G73JH05 with LG display and 8GB's(Upgraded) of ram. If your unit is working the way it should I don't think the LG display is worth the risk of obtaining a G73Lemon. -

That's the PSOD. Psychedelic screen of death. betaflame has it correct with:
It's not cracks, it is the wall paper. There were no cracks, at all - I was incredibly gentle with that laptop, wouldn't even eat anything near it.
Bestbuy would have taken it back, it was a monitor issue - nothing was damaged, it wasn't dropped or anything.
Did not have to use my ADW (since it's a known issue).
This appears to be the most common not driver related issue that the G73JH has. -
I really doubt the lg screen is that much better though.

It is.
Go see for your self. -
How, does BB have the g73 on display? Too bad there is no way to tell which screen you will get though.

Its all random depending on location. I'd return through different locations until I got one, if I was you.
But what you need to ask yourself is, is it worth the LG screen for the 1066 ram that usually comes bundled with the LG instead of the 1333 ram with the Auo screen? There's Pro and cons to each. Lets just say that my current LG G73 originally came with 1066 ram. Now I have 8GB's of 1333. That's why I Love Bestbuy
But if you do get the LG with the 1066 to upgrade to 8GB's only costs 57.99.

Finally decided to bite in large part to this thread.
Got the LG with the 1066. While it's certainly not the best panel I've ever seen it doesn't dissapoint anywhere near what other Asus notebook I've had did.
Thanks. -

I'm glad we could help.
Here's your next upgrade for a reasonable price

Thanks but I'll pick up something name brand on Newegg for less.
Oh and +rep for you. -
I don't like constantly returning stuff though, lol. Plus there is always that chance that you try to return something and they charge you restocking. I really don't think I need 8gb of ram. 6gb is more than enough

and for you as well +1 rep -

You are right. I have 8GB's of 1333 ram. I see no difference yet from 6GB's of 1066.
I only upgraded to make myself feel better lol....and because I thought it would improve my startup. Nope...still the same.
In the past I have bought all kinds of name brand ram like Corsair Gaming Ram, Kingston Platinum etc.....the ONLY time I ever saw a difference was when I bought OCZ ram. Most of the time the ram is manufactured in the same place and just rebranded for marketing reasons.
The OCZ ram had an overclocking tool to overclock the ram. Other than that it is NOT worth it in my opinion to purchase expensive re-branded ram outside of the factory configuration. -
If you want to improve startup buy an SSD. It is by FAR the single largest performance upgrade you can make especially when replacing an already slow laptop hard disk.
-
Oh and I agree on the RAM. The difference is warranty and support. Corsair and Kingston etc I know it's easy to get a replacement if they go bad. Not so sure of a brand I've never heard of.

Here's my experience with Memory-Master:
The Memory Master brand at Bestbuy comes with a lifetime warranty. When I purchased ram from Bestbuy I got free shipping because I'm a silver member, Memory Master sent it directly to me through UPS. When I ordered the wrong ram in the past Memory Master paid for UPS shipping both ways. Memory-Master's ram is re-branded Samsung ram.
I do have a 2nd Gen SSD as my C drive and Love it
In the end it is up to you who you chose to buy ram from. Because we are all in the same boat I figured I'd give you my take on it. Good luck with your purchase

I've got the BB version of the G73JH. I got it for photo processing. Unfortunately it has the inferior screen that makes photo editing nearly impossible.
It came with the 1600X900 AUO screen. The screen is very sensitive to viewing angle, colors shift with changes in angle. Used at normal viewing distances there's a lot of color difference between the top of the screen and the bottom. This makes correction of color gradients very difficult. Since I do astrophotography the picture backgrounds are usually very dark so any gradient at all stands out. I can correct the gradients in the pictures but it makes it very difficult when the gradients shift with screen angle, and across a still screen from top to bottom.
The screen color was way off, I've calibrated with a colorimeter and software which helps the color. I can't get by the angle problem.
I plan to replace the screen. Since I plan to buy another screen anyway, do you know if I can take out the 1600X900 that is currently in it and just put in the 1920X1080 that's also made for the J73JH?
Do you know the best screens available? I don't mind paying more.
Thanks

I read other users say that screencountry.com has replacement screens for the G73JH.
I have the LG screen and all though it is better it also has some color degradation at certain viewing angles. -
This guy claims to have done the replacement.
Upgrade screen on BB G73JH?
There's a link to the place he bought his from.
Cheers, -
Thanks to all.
I replaced my 1600X900 AUO screen with a 1920X1080 LG.
It was easy to do, no problems. After the replacement the computer boots to 1920X1080, there's no configuration change needed.
The screen I got was from Laptopscreen.com, cost was $100.99 plus $17.68 for shipping. This was quite a bit cheaper than the other vendors.
The LG seems to have a better vertical angle of view than the AUO.
Anyway if anyone wants to take their BB version of the G73JH to 1920X1080, it's fairly painless.
Other upgrades...
160GB SSD, Intel.
10GB memory by adding a 4GB Kingston module, $59
Red backlit keyboard, free (I had the red acetate)
