Asus ROG GL504 with thin bezels, Core i7-8750H and GeForce GTX 1070 spotted in the wild

Since thin bezels are trendy for gaming laptops right now, more and more OEMs are updating their models to reflect this tendency. Asus needs to stay on top of things and will soon release some updated models featuring thin bezels, including the ROG GL504. This model has not been officially announced yet, but is appears to be up for pre-orders at a Polish e-tailer.

Spec-wise, the GL504 model gets the latest 8th gen Core i5-8300H / i7-8750H CPUs from Intel, and users may add up to 32 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, together with storage combos comprising up to 512 GB NVMe SSDs + 1 TB SSHDs. As any respectable Asus gaming system, the new GL504 will sport either the GTX 1060 or the GTX 1070 GPUs.

    Other major features include:
    • 15.6-inch IPS-level matte display with 1080p resolution and 144 Hz refresh rate
    • RGB backlit keyboard with N-key rollover and overstroke tech
    • Connector suite: 1x USB-C 3.1, 3x USB-A 3.1 (1x Gen 2), mDP 1.2, HDMI 2.0, Ethernet jack, audio combo jack
    • WiFi + Gigabit LAN + Bluetooth
    • SD card reader
    • 1 MP webcam
    • 1-inch thickness and 5.2-pound weight

The i7-8750H + GTX 1070 + 256 SSD + 1 TB SSHD model can already be pre-ordered in Poland for around US$2300, and should soon be launched in North America for US$2000.

Please refrain from using huge font sizes, it really makes people feel like old people who need glasses.

other than that, interesting, It reminds me a lot on the GS65, however it is much thicker, am interested to see the temperatures on that thing.

Lately i've seen Asus doing this to their newest models, where they improve on their cooling much more than previously. After all these years where Asus made so many flawed and problematic notebooks, I love to see that they apparently start to learn and imrpove on it.

yes, thats why i m so curious about the cooling system on this gl504, i saw few reviewers that says GL503VS has bad temperature out of the box,

and i hope there's a thunderbolt 3 port full 4 lanes for the external graphic amp come along with this model.

Not sure how I feel about seeing more systems with the webcam at the bottom of the display, but otherwise I like that look.

I agree with Eric though ^^^ Just hope you'll never need to use the webcam unless you want others to see your nose hairs.

Has the potential to be the best 15-inch gaming laptop... hope they decide to ditch G-Sync for the additional battery life.

Blows hot air to your right hand. One less USB 3.0 port compared to GL503. Thicker than GL503. The front-facing light. And the under-bezel. Ugh, what a disappointment. This is not an improvement at all.

Still, the only good thing came out of this is the 144Hz AHVA matte panels. AUO are making some huge progress.

stupid webcam. stupid extra fat bottom screen bezel.

stupid lack of thunderbolt3, when thunderbolt3 is now royalty-free.

    stupid price, considering the shortcuts.

$300 price hike for newer rgb lights.

The bezel is there so the chassis has room for the heatsink, and mobo, and battery, its bigger, because the top one is thinner, you can't do magic and just shrink the chassis and keep it cooled, or keep the battery size something that is bigger than a cellphone..

i'm not saying they should shrink the overall size.

I'm saying that the screen lid is so big anyway, it would have been better to put the webcam back on the top, increasing the top bezel, and decreasing the lower bezel, keeping the lid size exactly the same.

it's a stupid compromise just to have a thin top bezel, only to have a way fatter bottom bezel. What's the point if you're gonna put the webcam in a stupid location.

It has G-Sync. So either it has a MUX or it doesn't have Optimus at all.

If this thing starts at $2k they are seriously taking the piss considering the GL503 started at a grand - thin bezzles and fairy lights it seems doubles the price lol

The GL503 launched with a price tag around $1,000-ish equipped with a GTX 1050 Ti. It has other variants too.
Now that that Intel i7 7th Gen CPUs are "old news", you can get the GL503 GTX 1060 version for about $1,000 now-a-days.

Great display on that thing too. 144hz 3ms IPS w/ 78% aRGB? That's a win. Not 4k, but may be some indication of the price point.

Well, this must be short term max turbo of CPU. Most likely the CPU runs at much higher power such as 70 watt during physics test. Since the physics score is much higher than other 8750H laptop if you watch other videos. I don’t think thermal will be a problem to this laptop.

CPU went from 80C to almost 100C in just a few seconds in the Physics Test.

If you read my post, and understand my sentences. This is very common when during physics test where CPU suddenly jump to very high package power. For example, in Dave's case, the CPU jumped to 70 or 80 watts during physics test resulting sudden temperature peak at almost 100c as well as higher physics scores. Meaning the CPU ran at higher processing speed than other gaming laptops. The gl504 has 70W PL1 and 90W PL2 bios setting.

So what you're telling me is, Asus should've throttled the CPU more to prevent a meltdown.

I am saying, gl504 is able to maintain a higher clock speed and processing power under CPU load. However, it is definitely not going to stay at nearly 100c the whole time. I am sure it will throttle back to 45W tdp at some point. The idea is that the CPU performs better but you will have to live with higher temperature because of short term boost. After the short term boost, there will be no difference between asus and other competitors.

You can also manually set the CPU package power to 45W max which is the Intel's ARK specification. Then, the CPU won't hit 100c in physics test, but you get lower scores.

It's the same gimmick as others. Looks good in a 30 second 3DMark Physics Test or CineBench (while still running close to thermal limits), but falters under longer workloads or when both CPU and GPU are stressed due to the shared cooling design.

The conclusion is up to you. As long as this is mobile CPU, and 45W package power is set by Intel, you can't expect too much from it for longer workloads. The only two ways to avoid this situation are buying a i9 laptop(unlocked) or desktop CPU(higher TDP design).

There's not point to the i9 or unlocked power limits if cooling is not up to snuff, it'll still throttle like the i7.

As far as I see, rog G703 and msi GT75 can do a good job on i9. Not alienware, it is a garbage, paying extra for i9 for nothing but thermal throttling.

1250 cb is great, seems like this machine has no problem handling the hothead 8750H. Still, 2K for GTX 1070 model is way too expensive considering MSI GP63 (GTX 1070) offers the same performance for 500$ less; and 1,7K for GTX 1060 even more ridiculous given there're many inexpensive (around 1K) contenders in this segment (HP Omen 15 or Lenovo Y530)

Where are you seeing the 1070 GP63 for $1,500? At that price point, I can only find the 1060 model (Amazon, GentechPC, HID). I'd be very interested in anything with a 1070 and a comparable screen for cheaper than $1,800.

Newegg has the 1060 for $1500, and I don't see the 1070 listed.

I'm not sure what makes you think 2k is expensive for a 1070+8750h. From my research, that seems to be pretty average or even on the low end. Sure, you can get a Microcenter branded Clevo on in-store pickup if you're lucky enough to live close to one, but other than that, I don't see a whole lot of people beating this price.

The Newegg exclusive MSI GP63 Leopard-428 was $1499 during July 4th sale, AND there was an additional $70 coupon available. Bringing the total down to $1429, which would be the final price if shipped outside of NJ (no tax). Plus 3% cashback from topcashback. For a i7 8750h, 8gbx2 dual channel config, 120hz panel, and a full 1070, not max-q!

I almost pulled the trigger but decided not to for a few reasons - right side Windows Key, right side exhaust, TN panel, no g-sync, "thick" bezel, no TB3, not a fan of the red strip across the chassis, only 51Wh battery, and only 128gb drive, and it's SATA.

Decided on the new HP Omen - was lucky enough to have access to the configurable model with 1070 (max-q though) and 144hz IPS display. It has thin side bezels, better design and build quality, 256gb Samsung 970 Evo, TB3, gsync, and 70Wh battery. With 15% cashback, it'll come out to around $1550 after all the July 4th discounts.

In an ideal world i'd love to get the Asus GM501 with thin bezels so this one is the closest i can find.
I still can't get over those stupid translucent keys though.
Anybody think it could be posible to buy a random Strix 1 keyboard from ebay just to get these 4 normal keys and replace them ?
Or are they using different attachment and/or size ?

Boggles my mind how they managed to create an almost perfect machine and just sh*** all over it with ridiculous design and over the top branding...
