    Hello All!!

This is my first post here about this computer but ... I love this website and it has been very useful. I followed all posts about this computer years ago and they have been extremely informative. Using this forum I have updated the bios, vbios, and unparked the cpu.

First, I completely understand that this computer is considered a dinosaur when it comes to gaming but I was hoping that there would be possibility to milk this machine a bit longer.

I am going to try to provide as much useful information as I can thinking of right now, please let me know if you need anything else.

    Down to business:

Problem: When I usually play the game out in the world and cities I average 160 fps. I maintain 60-80 fps in raid instances. However, when the encounter is engaged I drop to 5-10 fps; last night I dropped to 1.5 fps and maintained this for about 45 seconds before it let up.
    • The basics:
      • I only use this computer for one thing and that is playing WoW ... I know, but I love the game. I work 2 jobs, raise a 2 year old, house, wife, and college... WoW is my escape... back to business:
      • I have wiped the hard drive, there are only 4 things installed: Windows 7, WoW, Ventrilo, and F-Secure. These are all fresh installs, so new install and new caches would be taken care of regarding the computer and the game.
      • All Hardware is original except: Hybrid HDD and 10GB RAM
      • Internet Connection:
        • Wireless Connection. Hard wire isn't an option
        • 60Mbps in to the house, http://www.speedtest.net/ results: 46.89Mbps
        • Router: Asus rt-ac68p
    • Like I said: I have updated the bios, vbios, and unparked the cpu.
    • gpu driver is updated: 14.12 AMD Catalyst Omega Software
    • Temperatures never go above 80C ... I do keep a monitor up.
    • All other drivers were installed from the Asus website. Although I updated the WLAN card because Asus's website was out of date.

Do I have any options or am I doomed to quit WoW until I can get a newer computer?

I am dealing with family (2 year old and wife) while writing this post so it is EXTREMELY possible I am missing relevant information so ask if needed... (I do have driverview, etc... and can post info if needed).. wife glaring at me, must stop typing...

Check your temperatures and ensure your heatsinks are clean (spray with compressed air)

That sounds like your CPU has to much work with the lightning effects (or fighting effects). Try to turn down the lightning settings and also check if you have disabled Anti Aliasing and MSAA, those require a lot of power (but also bring some eye-candy). What are your WOW graphical settings? You could also try to lower the sound settings a little.
For a test, can you install MSI Afterburner, enable in the settings the ingame OSD (default) and enable the view of the GPU clock in OSD in the settings?
Make sure it's on 700 MHz while the game is running.

    • All in game settings have been set to minimum. AA and MSAA are also disabled.
    • I had the computer apart for a good cleaning last week just before re-installing windows.
    • I haven't installed MSI afterburner yet, I do have the vbios that allows for OC from charity.
      • I am able to view the clocks in the catalyst control center since I have the modified vbios and its set @ 700 MHz... I will download MSI afterburner and check on that though.
    • Would throttle stop help? Think that this could be a throttle issue? If so what kind of settings should I use? I have never used the software.
    • I use HWMonitor and have never seen temps go above 80C
    • I forgot to mention that I do limit the FPS to 30 in game to prevent spikes and heating.
    • I also started running Razor Cortex, It hasn't resolved the issue

Did you also try it with all addons disabled? Maybe one of them is hogging a lot of cpu time.
Under Advanced in the game settings is the option to disable the new player models, try to enable this option.
Did it work better before patch 6?

Before WoD this computer rocked it!

I do have new character models shut off as well.

I have tried with minimal addons... The trouble is I experience the problem when raiding and there are addons I require for raiding so testing with all addons off wouldn't be an option. I feel it would be too much for me to ask the raid group to do a couple test runs where I can't perform...

I know its the best way to test I just don't want to burden them with my problems.

Run ThrottleStop and uncheck BD PROCHOT

You cannot use ThrottleStop to overclock a 720QM but you can use ThrottleStop to disable BD PROCHOT. That is a big problem for many Asus laptops so give ThrottleStop a try.

Okay, downloaded Throttlestop > unchecked BD PROCHOT > Clicked Save > Then clicked Turn On

Anything I need to watch for now? Will I run the risk of over heating at all with this disabled? Or is it not a big deal since the GPU and CPU don't share a heatsink/fan on this machine?

As long as the vents are free of dust, you'll be fine. The G73JH has great cooling.

    This is unnecessary

Just keep an eye as usual, try to log chip behaviour if performance goes low again to help diagnose the issue.

Always a good thing to check if performance issues are in a single title.

It can't be related to throttling if temps are 80C or less. My guess would be a video driver or game issue. It's very strange that it's still slow at minimum settings.

And yeah as Meaker says, try something else you know that runs well and see if it still runs well.
