I bought an hp pavilion dv74090ca laptop 2 months ago from costca canada. Day 1 it crashed coming out of sleep mode with youtube running on firefox. The hp support hasn't fixed this problem. I also notice that the computer gives off a high pitched noise which is very annoying. It's not coming from the monitor and some people have been saying it's coming from the chip (the same chip used in the asus g73 laptops I think. Intel Intel® Core™ i7-720QM (1.60 GHz) Processor Turbo Boost Technology).

So I must ask, are there any unsolvable issues with the asus g73 laptops like the high pitched noise or frequent crashes? Also what's the difference between the Asus G# models? There's 71 72 73 and 51. How's the support and warranty for Canadians (Vancouver, BC)? Where is the best place to buy these laptops?

Many thanks for your time :)

Frequent crashes - yes, but this can be solved if you are lucky. And have good enough tech knowledge. High Pitched noise on this laptop is a rarity. I have only heard it happen when I'm in Sandbox 2, working on a map with absolutely nothing in it. Seems to only happen when the framerate of something is incredibly high, all though it doesn't happen in game menus without Vsync either.

The G71 is a predecessor of the G73 - it's old and outdated, so don't get it. It also has overheating issues, and GPU clockrate issues after Sleep Mode.

The G72 is the model between the G71 and the G73. Again, it has overheating issues, but not the sleep clockrate problem. Old and outdated - don't get it.

The G51JX is a more recent 15.6" laptop. The other above ones are 17" laptops. Personally, I wouldn't get it, as it gets pretty hot and has a couple of random BSOD problems.

I'd wait for the G53JW to come out, or get a G73JW now. Don't get the G73JH, as you can see it has a lot of problems.

The JW is the newer model with the Nvidia GTX 460m vs the JHs Mobility 5870 and the JW also has USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4 and a better touchpad (with separate buttons) which the JH doesnt.

IMO, JH vs JW : get whichever is the more cost effective.

I've only recently bought my G73JH the 2 things I don't like are the track pad button, which is probably an individual thing, and the lack of dedicated multimedia buttons. Doesn't sound like a biggie but is a nuisance, it's not as though there's no space for them. Wouldn't be so bad if there was a F-lock key.

You probably already know about the lack of expresscard, eSATA and USB 3.

Other than that no problems, understated design, quiet, nice screen, backlit keyboard is nice to have (although would have been even nicer if the track pad was also illuminated) and plenty fast enough. Not noticed any keyboard lag that some have trouble with.

I should at least mention that I have the G73JH-A1, and have never had a single issue with it.

Loving my G73 plays anything i throw at it. No Issues...but thats not saying much cause i just had it for a week now. But i love the matte/rubbery finish...dont know about other users, i am loving my keyboard...for me this is one of the finer purchases i have ever made.

Love my JH. Plays everything I throw at it amazingly for a laptop. Now transcoding BR rips while i'm at work. (100% CPU usage)

Thanks for your replies :) What's the difference between the G73Jh-A1, G73Jh-A2, G73Jh-B1s, etc? They look like they all have the same specs.

edit: saw the thread with a similar question. Just minor hardware upgrades eh?

Ugh, Canadian keyboards are so bad. See if you can find a retailer in town that sells it, you might pick up a proper keyboard and a 1920x1080 screen instead of that 1600x900. Might cost you another 100 bucks, but worth it imo.

If youre willing to spend 1500$ for that butchered BB JH, i suggest you rather buy an A2 for 50$ more HERE and get a fully loaded one with a 1920x1080 screen.
Or much better if you can shell out the extra $ get the JW HERE and youll get the cooler nvidia card, much less problematic touchpad with a normal 2 button design, HDMI 1.4 and a high speed USB 3.0 port.

Get the FHD screen, backpack & mouse with you if you can, you will not regret it!

BTW, had mine now for about 2 months, not had any issues, the touchpad buttons are a bit unresponsive that´s it. Temps has risen maybe 4C when stressing since I bought mine, but they are still very low.

BTW, SC2 really looks good in FHD!!!

I'd agree. It's not that the FHD screen 1080p is so important, for me it was, but the overall quality of the screen itself is unmatched in the sub-$2000. Even a MacBook Pro costing $2,500 IMO doesn't have a screen to match this Hannstar. Don't know who Hannstar is, but they got a winner with this one.

Hannstar has a whole line of desktop monitors. "Hanns" series. I see them alot at Best Buy.
