Hey guys couple questions, Im looking at switching from my alienware 17, 780m. I once had the asus g46vw 14" model with the 660m, the style and design blew me away, along with the superior cooling. I sold it because the 660 didnt really fit my gaming needs. About a year ago i purchased a AW 17 with a 780m, has plenty of horsepower that i'm looking for, solid machine, but its a little, flashy, bulky hot and LOUD for my likings. I understand these 17 inch laptops with the top of the line cards are going to generate some heat, but has anyone had experience with both? How does the 880m 4gb vs the 780m 4gb stack up? How do the screens compare? etc etc. If anyone has had some time with both and could let me know that would be awesome!

    Thanks in advance guys!

You wont see much difference in actual gaming, just in benchmarks. If you're OK with a slight improvement and are more geared towards getting a lighter less flashy and all the other reasons you mentioned then its a good choice. Not a good choice if you're looking for major improvement in performance.

Nope not really looking for major improvements, im happy with my performance now. Although i would be getting some other boost from the SSD's in raid, rather then the Hybrid SSD.

The Hybrids were nice a couple years back when SSD were over twice the price, even three times the price they are now. You'll see a nice improvement with just a single one, RAID will be great.

I would invest in a different panel from stock.

The screen quality and general build quality (Specifically sturdiness) seems to be the only parts where the Asus is severely lacking over the Alienware. The screen I have seen on the g750 (No idea which model they have been) have all been horrendous, I really hope there is a better looking option than those.

The AUO 90% panel is pretty decent, though you want it calibrated if you don't like saturation of colour.

I don't advice you to do this, I owned 3 ASUS laptops previously, ASUS G73Sw, G75VW, and G750JX, all had problems within months just head over to their forums and you'll be shocked how problematic they are. a common problem for example is the left USB ports which should be all USB 3.0 are not actually 3.0, you insert a USB 3.0 HDD and good luck if it connects stable without disconnection randomly.

their screens are ok if you were luck to get the Samsung Panel which I did by the way, others with the CHEI (I forgot what it's called excactly) suffer from fuzzy lines on the screens when you look at it from a certain angle.

Their matte screens are also the worse matte screens ever they are so dull and gloomy as if someone spilled grease over them

stick to your Alienware buddy, you have the best of the best what are you trying to do really I don't get it?

    just my 2 cents worth

My G750JH has probably the best TN panel i've ever seen.. Great viewing angles, extremely bright (too bright!) and good contrast/colors. I don't even want to swap it out it's a great example of how to do a TN panel the correct way. I think it's an AUO but i'll check later.
