So I just went to Best Buy and, as a trial, purchased their version of the G73 with the 1600x900 LED screen. I wanted to try out this laptop before purchasing (ultimately) the new Sandy Bridge version with the 1920x1080 screen.
This Best Buy screen is washed-out, has absolutely ZERO off-angle visibility (if I move my head about 1 inch in any direction the colors completely change on the screen), the blacks are muddy, etc. It is, bar none, the worst laptop screen I have ever seen in my entire life. And I have seen a lot over the years.
MY QUESTION:
I have not been able to see any of the 1920x1080 G73's in real life yet. Can someone here verify that this superior screen does not exhibit any of these behaviors?

Did you check this "trial" G73 and see if it has an AUO screen? Just curious...
And my JH-A1 1920x1080 Hannstar Screen is amazing, to say the least lol none of the problems you speak of. All of the higher end versions/models of the G73's whether they be the JH/JW/SW should have the Hannstar screen or something very similar, as far as I know. -

I'm not sure how to tell if it is an AUO screen or not, all I know is that it is complete garbage. The screen on the $400 laptop I just bought for my little brother blows this thing out of the water.
Once ASUS starts shipping out fixed Sandy Bridge G73's, I'll have to hope that MicroCenter has one I can look at.

I am very happy with mine even with brightness at the lowest setting it is useable for surfing, and other day to day tasks.
Great Idea about the trial! -
Hello,
I have the BestBuy model. With the AUO139E LCD Panel 1600x900 resolution. I must say I don't see the "washout" and the "color change" just by moving my head 1 inch. I can move feet to the sides (horizontal) and get great "off angle" viewing. Vertical viewing isn't near as good as horizontal, as the "wash out" begins when I move the panel to about a 45degree angle. But how often am I really going to be looking at the panel from that angle?
I researched and read a lot about the issues with the AUO brand of panel prior to purchasing and found that the lower quality panels seemed to be in the first run of "BestBuy" products (lower cost). However, my model was a 2nd or 3rd run (Delivered in July).
If I were to guess (skullbussa) I would say you got an earlier "version" with the lower quality AUO panel. There is some other discussions on this topic in the forum and there are people who swear by the Hannistar, the LG, and even the AUO panels. If you don't like it, then take it back. Obviously you got the machine on trial anyways.
You should know that it could be over a month before the "fixed" sandy bridge (G73SW) models are going to be available. Possibly longer for them to reach the "BestBuy" shelves.

Yes the newer version the AUO Bestbuy screen is a MASSIVE improvement over the original.. Perhaps the OP saw an old display model...
I just saw the new AUO myself recently and its pretty darn nice overall..
Good viewing angles/Brightness/Color.. There is still that white tinge on the bottom which is different then just bleeding from the screen but yeah its a decent stock panel... -
Some additional reading on the screens from an old thread:

This G73 screen is just terrible...
