    Time for a new laptop - ASUS G75 Series?

    Haven't been on here in years. :hi2:

    So, my laptop, i.e. boat anchor, Dell Inspiron E1705 gave up the ghost (again) despite the fact that I have replaced the motherboard, video card, HDD, 2 or 3 AC adapters, the keyboard, and even the processor (elective CPU upgrade). Even the fan and hinges are borked. I hate you, Michael Dell. I also hate HP, based on dealings with their support that made me homicidal. Won't deal with Samsung because I hate the company as a whole.

    Asus seems to be the highest-rated Wintel in terms of customer satisfaction and support, so there it is.

    Anyway, considering the ASUS G75 Series G750JW-DB71. I need 17", want quad-core Haswell, and would like some robust graphics. I know it weighs a ton, but I use a cart anyway.

    A few concerns.

    1) Looks like the Asus FAQ here still lists Asus' warranty as 2-years, not 1, so that section looks like it needs to be updated?

    2) Anyone deal with Asus warranty service? It seems to specifically prohibit any "tampering." Does this include HDD's? The stock one is a crappy 5400 RPM.

    3) What's the delio on Asus's Warranty Extension Program? Worth it?

    4) How is the screen on this? I know it is 1080P, but is it really nice? I was reading that Lenovo's 1080p LCD isn't so great.

    5) Looks from reviews on Newegg that you can downgrade to Win 7 with a bios tweak. Anyone do this?

    6) Benefits from buying from an authorized reseller? Looks like you have to go through the unauthorized reseller's warranty for service. I have one driving distance to an authorized reseller, always nice in case of RMA or service.

    7) Is there a Toshiba that is as good or better (I know it sounds dumb, but I like silver over black).

    I realize that one may search for each of these questions, but my laptop is bricked! I am on a friend's PC and will be checking this thread via mobile. :(

    1: Yes 2 year warranty is incorrect and It's now only 1 year warranty, if you can sent me the link I can ask Asus to fix it.

    2: You can always upgrade HDD without void any warranty, they even include screws for users to add a secondary Hard Drive. Only time the warranty is voided is users causing damage to the laptop.

    3: It's kind of like insurance, if you never use it then it's wasted and if you ever need it then you are covered.

    4: It's bright with good viewing angles but it's matte so you can see little graininess if you look closer.

    5: All you need to do is enable CSM (Compatible System Module) for Windows 7 or earlier OS:

    6: You get both support from reseller and Asus.

    7: no comment.

    One thing worth more researching before you jump on bandwaggon is to research more on all this screen complaints around on internet one good pointer is this thread: G750JH screen replacement?

    You can go through a reseller and have it replaced with another of course.

    Just a heads up if you do upgrade any parts or have a reseller do it you will want to remove those parts if you ever do have to send it in for warranty. We have heard on multiple occasions that Asus will remove any upgraded parts and replace them with what the stock configuration should have been.
    If you do have a reseller upgrade parts its best to get the warranty set up with that reseller to help avoid that issue.

    I have two Asus G series laptops. I would recommend going through a reseller.

    1. They can customize system to your liking
    2. They install Windows for you and not all the stupid bloatware
    3. You get the Windows install and driver disks (at least I did.)
    4. If your notebook ever needs service, they are MUCH better at it than the Asus service centers. Even if you are out of warranty, they will still take care of you for cost of parts and labor.

    Asus G series laptops have excellent screens. Make sure to get the 1920 X 1080 resolution. I would get the glossy screen if that is an option.

    Drawbacks:

    1. Charge doesn't last too long. A couple of hours.
    2. Heavy, but get a backpack for it.

    It's true about the Warranty. You can do about anything, as long as you don't damage the notebook. Add memory, SSD, ODD, anything. But if you use a reseller, you don't have to worry about the upgrades.
