    Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Asus G46VW. It is a refurbished machine from newegg.com. I have both CPUz and CPU-ROG on this lappy. I have run super-pi a few times along with starting every CPU demanding program I could think of to the point I almost maxed out my 8GBs RAM+12GBs VRAM. The lappy never changed the multiplier during any of this. I am assuming this is how the turbo boost works. If I am wrong please let me know. I am some what worried that I spent $660 on a lappy that doesn't work properly. I know it is a refurbished lappy but i was at very least hoping the hardware would be working properly.

If anyone could get back to me on this tonight it would be greatly appreciated.

Also I am wondering if it is really worth it to upgrade to win 8.1? I know that 8 has it own problems but I am just wondering if 8.1 is any better. I have access to almost every copy of windows being a computer science student so if you have another suggested OS just let me know. I personally like win 8 so far with the start screen and such. I wasnt sure if I would like it or not until I got this machine.

It sounds like you're doing whats needed to make the turbo boost kick in. You are also plugged into power right, not just battery.

Yeah I was on the plug. I got it figured out late last night. ASUS hid there own secret power management software in a folder that I couldn't so everything is faster now. On to my second concern I HDD is clicking like crazy every time it reads and writes. So I am assuming I have to send this in for RMA because I don't think there is any way I can get them to send me a HDD for it.

Clicking is usually a sign of a drive about to fail. I'd back up anything thats important and get the RMA set up.

That's the plan Hutsady. Just have to wait for my new thumb drives to get here. All my old ones are to small and all my cloud drives are almost full already.

Hey Hutsady I talked to you the other week on xotic about ordering a notebook from you guys. The names Jordan C. Sorry but I found this one way cheaper all most 40% off its original price. I do how ever plan to order a killer gaming lappy next fall.

Hey oz120! Thanks for the heads up about us talking. Its hard to pass up a 40% discount, and since we dont sell this particular model I can't be too mad you didnt get it from us :).
You may have gotten a good deal on it because it uses the 3rd gen Core i7 and we're on 4th gen now. If the hard drive is failing and you're still within your return period you may consider just returning it if possible and get the current CPU's and newer 700M series video cards that are available.

I would but I don't have the budget for that. This one has the i5 3230m w/ GTX 660m. I would like to overclock both just a little bit but it is 100% faster than the lappy I was using. I was thinking of upgrade it to a i7 after my warranty is up. I really like this lappy because it is so small. For my next one I am thinking a desktop replacement but not 100% sure yet. might get a good lappy for gaming but also try to build a killer desktop with the rest of my bigger budget so I can get all my work done no matter where I am plus be able to game.

If it does what you need and the size of the computer also works out then you cant ask for more :), espeically with the deal you got.

You probably wont be able to OC it much because of the small chassis and the extra heat it produce but it never hurts to try. Just do it in baby steps.

I was thinking 2.8GHz-3.4GHz up from 2.6GHZ-3.1GHz for the CPU overclock range not sure about the GTX660m still doing my research on what is stable without a lot of extra heat. baby steps are a must I have fried many motherboards and CPUs back in the day by just saying "lets just push it right away."

This CPU is locked and cant be overclocked at all. You can adjust the GPU with MSI Afterburner.

Yes only the 3720qm and above have partial unlocks with the 3940xm being totally unlocked.
