    Hi guys,

Just got this beast today and am very impressed. Is anyone aware of this issue? It won't recognize my external HDD when connected to my USB 3.0 port. If I plug it into the 2.0 port, it works fine.

I also downloaded the latest 3.0 drivers from the ASUS site.

    Motherboard drivers perhaps?

I've got the BestBuy version. My advice is, bring or send it back for a replacement as soon as you're available to. From what I've heard, the Fresco USB 3.0 Controller in these things can be jenky. I have a similar problem where my external USB3 or USB2 HDDs freeze and disconnect whenever I playback or transfer a file to or from these drives, when plugged into the USB3 port. This problem persists with every driver revision and Windows 7 reinstall I've tried. From what I've gathered, it's likely do to a faulty controller. Nothing I can fix. Now, I'm RMAing it to ASUS to fix because I waited a month and can't return it back to BB for a replacement. Funny thing is it took me that long to figure out the problem. Just do yourself a favor and send it back for a replacement, you shouldn't have to deal with it.

I believe it can be attributed to the output voltage not being high enough, and some people got around it by using a powered USB 3.0 hub

Are you saying that ASUS is selling these Notebooks knowing that the USB dont work properly? I've seen many posts of people complaining about this.

    http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showthread.php?3631-G74SX-USB-ports-not-working

Chastity I know you are a moderator @ ASUSROG, Please let me know if this is the case so that I can go and return my NEW ASUS back and get another brand.

    Thanks

I am not saying that :) The USB port outputs to spec. Mind you the USB spec is only 0.5A, and many devices are getting used to the 1A that many PC USB ports are set to.

What I am saying is that your device may be wanting more power than what the port is supplying, but I could also be wrong since I can't test it. :)

ASUS' response was basically to set it back to the factory default image to resolve the issue; I mean that is just a ridiculous response.

I'm calling them on Monday to complain.

A powered USB 3.0 hub is not an option here either considering that I have a WD passport with no means to connect to a power source...

Also, how come the USB 2.0 ports all function perfectly?

They use different drivers. Have you tried any other devices in the 3.0 port, just to make sure the port is active? Put in a little thumbdrive or something to see if it can read that.

I believe you misunderstand what they mean by a powered usb hub. They are referring to a USB Hub with its own power supply something such as this: Amazon.com: Syba SD-HUB20058 USB 3.0 Super Fast Speed 5Gbps 4-Port Hub for Internal or External Use: Electronics

An simpler alternative that "might" work is something like:
Amazon.com: USB 3.0 Y Cable A Male to A Male and 5 Pin Mini: Electronics

I assume this would work at USB 3.0 speed and pull the needed power from the USB 2.0 port, but then again it might just function at USB 2.0 speed on the 3.0 port. I can't find any reviews one way or the other.

A powered USB hub has their own AC connection to supply power to the devices connected. This way all the ports can supply max load.

You can try this app to control your voltage output on the USB3 fresco port:

    http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps/AiCharger/AiCharge_Z102.zip

(It's an app for the G74SX, but you are welcome to try it and see if it installs) Setting to Quick charge bumps it up to 0.9V output.

BTW, no need to complain to Asus phone line, as I am with Asus Customer Care and can provide all the service they can.

Try doing a clean install of windows 7 and update all your drivers. That might help. I have a WD Passport and Samsung m2 (both are usb 3.0) that runs perfectly fine on my usb 3.0 port. No hanging or losing connection or anything at all.

Sorry it took so long to get back on this post but USB 3.0 is still not working...

I installed that USB Charge app but it doesn't even launch! I can see it in the task bar and see the icon ASUS Ai charger but clicking on it does nothing, and killing the task and restarting it does nothing either.

For info, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit

Yep, all USB 2.0 devices work perfectly when connected to the USB 3.0 port. If I connect my 3.0 device into the 2.0 hub it works fine.

Go into your BIOS, and go to the 2nd tab. You should see an entry for USB CHARGE. Please enable this. This does the same as the AI Charger application.

I have a G53JW. I own a WD Passport and Samsung M2, both of which connects with the usb3.0 port to my computer perfectly well. But i tried connecting my friend's Samsung M2 usb3.0 hard disk via usb3.0 and my computer refuses to read it but my computer detects it as being connected because the led on the hard disk lights up and my computer makes the sound that plays when an external device is connected. It works on the usb2.0 port perfectly fine. What could the problem be?

I have the same problem on my UX31 ultrabook. Did you perhaps upgrade Windows 7 to the ultimate edition?

    Hello there,

I installed the app and then enabled the setting in the BIOS. I still have the same issue as before...

    Hi people

I just bought a Seagate 1.5tb usb3.0 portable hard disk because my WD MyPassport got screwed. I got it yesterday. I had plugged it into my usb3.0 port and the thing worked fine. I copied 250GB stuff from my internal hard disk to the Seagate and it did it very fast. Then disconnected the thing.
Today, I tried connecting it to my USB3.0 port and it simply will not recognise my external. I connect it to the usb2.0 port and it works fine. Tried restarting but to no avail.

Is there anything I can do to get it working on my usb3.0 port. I cannot find a powered cable here in Kerala, India. The AiCharge thing does not work on my laptop for some reason.

    ANy help will be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Vipin

    Hi Vipin,
I noticed G53JW has a BIOS update called "210" version here and its release note only contains "Update USB 3.0" which may be a fix against intermittent USB 3.0 connections. Thanks to Asus for providing non-brief explanation about release notes, though!

Hi there, I successfully installed the updated version of the app this time and pushed it all the way to 99%. The 3.0 port still won't recognize my WD passport drive! I even went out and bought a 4 port powered USB 3.0 hub and it won't even accept the connection from my drive...?

    Any ideas Chastity?

For the record, my G74's USB 3.0 port has always worked fine, with just the single driver for it downloaded from Asus' site. I've used it with two different USB 3.0 Seagate external drives, and then used a Tripp Lite USB 3.0 powered switch, which worked great too.

Speeds really are much better...probably a minimum of twice as fast as 2.0 on my hard drives, and quite often 4x as fast.

(My G74's keyboard went wacky I guess after I cleaned it, so now it's sitting under my desk running Folding @ Home on my CPU and GPU 24/7! It's doing THAT really well too so far :) )

I had a very similar problem. I simply re-installed all the drivers on my G53SW from the original backup (I believe the application is called InstAll and it might be under esupport folder) and it solved the problem.

After this, my USB 3.0 is significantly faster. I can see files transferring at more than 100 MBytes/sec.

I had a very similar problem on my asus m4a87td motherboard , and here's how i solved my problem thanks to God :

My 500 gb WD hdd wouldn't show on my computer. But then I tried to update my BIOS , but nothing happened. Then i downloaded the latest (host controller driver usb 3.0) from Asus website for my particular motherboard. Fortunately that solved my problem thanks to God.

This is a step by step what i did :
    1. Go to ASUS
    2. Go to products/motherboards
    3. Find your particular motherboard and select it
    4. Go to download and select your os
    5. go to USB and you will find host controller driver usb 3.0
    6. download the latest version / hextract the rar file then click the setup icon not the asus_setup or whatever.
    7. Driver installed and that solved my issue.

    IMPORTANT!
I almost forget to tell you something. When I rebooted my PC. before it could boot a screen came up and had searching for drivers and and then the PC couldn't boot.
IF that happened to you all you have to do is to go into BIOS and change the boot priority to SATA

Yeah, it's a driver issue. Here's my experience:

USB 2.0 ports all work fine.

USB 3.0 port works great on some external drives, disconnects mid-transfer on others. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it either, as two different Toshiba externals of the same model number each had different results. One worked, the other didn't. Digging through the event logs, it would say something about a cache being corrupted. It's been a few months since I had this problem, so I don't remember the exact error message.

Anyways, downloading the newest drivers fixed it for MY external, a WD Passport. That's good enough for me :)
