I've made a relatively new (1 year old) SanDisk Cruzer Slice 32GB usb drive bootable with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and the win98boot files. It's FAT32 formatted, and I did a full format (which took about an hour!).

Now, I've tried it on two other PCs and when I boot from it, a windows 98 screen flashes up for a moment, followed by the C:\> prompt. Everything works well.

On the G73JH, I can select it on the boot menu (it appears as Cruzer Slice), but then there's no windows 98 screen, no prompt, just a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. Does nothing when I type.

Any ideas what the problem is? I don't have access to another usb stick at the moment.

Do you have uefi turned on in the BIOS setup?

Yeah if you want to boot DOS you need to go back to BIOS/MBR booting instead of UEFI. ;)

Remember to change it back or you may not be able to boot back into windows or whatever OS you are running on your hard disk.

Ok, I'm having this same problem.. With the same model of computer... I turned on UEFI mode.. and I'm now able to see my USB drive... But it still doesn't move past the blinking cursor on the bottom left hand screen... I've been working on my GSOD problems for days... I think I'm getting close... God this ASUS is a nightmare... Please help..

If I turn off the UEFI mode...If I turn it off.. I don't see my flash card as an option to boot from... :(

I'm usually very good with these sort of things... But I really feel like a noob here.. Wasted about 2 days trying to update drivers and all sorts of other things...System Crashing... ETC...

JulianCH Try inserting the USB stick, power on, mash the ESC key and a boot menu should appear.
OR go into bios and disable all boot options except USB Stick.

Yes.. I formatted it correctly... Followed the video from asus perfectly... I even did it 3 times incase I made some simple mistake... I'm About to try a booting mashing escape key... And then I'll try disabling everything but usb next....

Thank you sir... ESC key did the trick... I cannot believe it was something so simple... Even google didn't tell me ESC key... Everything is perfect again.. Now I'm flashed.. and Can install a current Catalyst Control Center to update my drivers... Thanks again everyone... This Forum is awesome.. I'm going to stick around here...

Asus can be quirky, Kudos to Tijo he told me that trick! Asus gaming laptops should have a short cut to this forum on the desktop !

alright, let's dust this thread off a bit.

I created a bootable Windows 7 USB with my Kingston Data Traveler + WintoFlash

When I select it off the menu (using ESC). I just get a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen. (I have tried both UEFI mode on and off)

The USB itself will work on another machine. Although a bit quirky. In that other machine it shows up as:
    USB Kingston Data 108... (works)
    PMAP Kingston Data 108...(blinking cusor)

So I wonder if it has to do with this PMAP thing. I have no idea what that is and a quick google search did nothing for me.

Another thing is this. I can clearly see the .efi file in windows explorer on this key. So maybe I can manually add it as a boot option? the ASUS BIOS is a bit confusing about this. I don't know what path I would choose. But the bootmgr.efi file is right there in the key, no need to go into any folders.

As a tribute to all who have stayed up way too long to solve an issue when they have to work the next morning...

Turns out that the motherboard inside my ASUS (and this may not be everyone's experience) doesn't like WinToFlash. I tried 3 different versions of WinToFlash to no avail.

Then I set up the USB maually using these instructions and it worked like a charm (UEFI mode off)

I wonder if others have had luck with WinToFlash
