I'm currently having lags and hangs. IRDKW.. but it just happened recently. never experienced this before. maybe i updated something? can't remember.

hangs usually happen when i'm not playing. lags happen when i play (i've been enjoying DA2 marathons for the whole day and have also had lags while playing, then one big hang and decided to post the problem here)

if it helps, these are the things installed on my laptop.

and i don't know if i have useless programs in here, just tell me if there are so i could also delete them. :D

Yeah I seem to get lags and hangs while playing DA2 for a few hours, If it alt tab and back to the game it seems to clear it.

Very strange. Apart from that everything works fine and temps are magic.

Personally I would delete half the bloatware crap you have on there :) Get rid of anything you dont need, defrag and disc check.

Yep totally right dont even bother trying to uninstall everything as it wont get rid of the dormant files. Reinstall and then remove the bloatware and turd before you get started. It will run a lot better.

I was just about to reply to your message as soon as i saw it. for no reason it hanged. :))

won't i get more problems when i reinstall? it would be a headache if the sounds weren't working and stuff.. i'm scared :|

and how do you mean "a lot better"? will i see a significant boost in performance? :D

I think it might just be DA2 for me matey the only time it does this is when playing it but I am overclocking harshly as well so could be related.

In general load times will be a lot faster. If you have a ton of programs running at startup and in the background the load times will be slower and bloatware loves to cause this problem. Also the more free space you have the better disc activity you will have page filing and such.

so i tried downloading the driver cd from the asusrog link. slept, and woke up it still had 40 minutes to go. checked fb, then *tadaaaaa!* not responding. :|

is there a torrent somewhere that i can download this file from? (my internet only goes up to 1mbps. no more no less :| )

Another question! :D is installing wifi drivers important? wifi does work even if there is no drivers installed. plus mine had intel wimax 6250. i don't even know what it does. do i still need this if i do a clean install?

is the g73jh driver updated with the latest drivers? :p

sorry have too many questions :D i just wanna have a problem free g73. which seems like impossible. :))

What do you mean by the G73JH driver? As for the wifi drivers, yes, yes , yes! If you have an intel card, it will perform better on intel's latest drivers. There's no need to install anything other than the driver for your wi-fi card though.

It's possible to have a problem free G73. No touchpad issues, no GSODs, the only crash i ever had was caused by me messing with the GPU clocks a bit too much and no lock-ups.

Ooooooh. i'd want that. :D so the wifi is a different driver from the intel wimax driver? 2 devices? like uh.. the wifi is the basic thingy and the wimax is like an internet booster? lol. just guessing what it does. :p i'm gonna go reformat now! :D

It should be the same installer for both the wifi and wimax funtion. I suggest you get them from intel's website. Anyways having an intel wi-fi card is way better than the stock atheros.

    Here's the download link: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...7, 64-bit*&DownloadType=Software Applications

Select the first 8.48MB download. This is the driver only, you don't need the other software especially since you'll probably be using the wireless console anyways.

Wimax isn't the same thing as wi-fi, it's another transmission protocol and you might not be using it but sinc eyou already have the 6250 it's always nice to have more features.

Uh if you have an intel wifi, install the intel drivers :p. Atheros drivers are for atheros cards, which you don't have since it's an intel... Installing the atheros dirvers would be like installing nVidia drivers for your 5870.

i readon chastity's sig app reference that this one's the default and there's another installer for intel. the reason why i though there are two hardwares to be installed. -__-"

All is working pretty good and fast so far :D it's like braaand new! :D Thank yeew!!! :D (more like brand neewb though)

now the camera driver and the subwoofer is not working. :| i'll try to fix it while waiting for you guys to reply. :D

oh! and can i see a screenshot of what you guys have installed?(if it's not much of a burden :D) just wanna compare it to what i have right now. i might miss something out. :p

subwoofer now working! :D but when i install the camera drive it asks if i want to install the usb sumthin. i click yes then an error pops out. usb 2.0/1.3m bla bla bla. :(

it did it again! :| it hanged :| one thing i noticed is that it only hangs when i'm downloading something. :| or maybe i need to get a new drive. :/

Might not be the wi-fi card if it hangs when you dl something. It might be due to the router or some other factor. If you have another laptop, check to see if it hangs when you download. If it doesn't what programs do you have or don't have compared to the G73 (highly doubt it's a software issue at this point though). If the wi-fi card in the other laptop is a half-height like in the G73, swap them to see what happens. Uninstall the first one through device manager, install the drivers for the other one and see if it hangs. Oh and a wi-fi card costs like 20$ so it's no biggie to replace it.

If it's still hanging after a reinstall, it sounds to me like you may have hardware issues.

Begin by downloading HWiNFO32 and checking the Sensors tab to make sure all of your temperatures are in check.

An ATI. :p i lately tested it with a new game that i'm playing, Dead Rising 2. it's just not that stable. :( i'm gonna try to downgrade to 11.2 from 11.4 in awhile.

    my settings are:

    resolution: 1600x900
    multisampling: 4x
    zombie quality: high
    shadow quality: medium
    texture filtering: anisotropic 4x

all is good when i'm just evading zombies. but when i do explosions that's when it starts to drop to 20 from 40-55ish.

    i just saw quagmire's D.R 2 gameplay vid.
he had 1920 x 1080 res from the start.
high quality on zombies and shadows.
    2x multisampling
    and anisotropic 16x

wouldn't 1600x900 have a better performance considering i have lower settings than quagmire's?

one thing he had that i didn't is an SSD drive. i understand that it speeds up loading time. does it also speed up gameplay? :p

    and

*these results are on idle btw. :|

i haven't used any programs to overclock my cpu. for the gpu i tried amd's built in program, which results to uglier gameplay so i stopped using it a few months ago.

I understand that the G73's a monster lappy. but shouldn't it do more? :p

Intel WiFi options are $20-30, so no biggie. I got a 6200, and it offers 300mbit and 5GHz support, plus better range, all for $23. Plus no laggy Atheros drivers. :D

    @AsILayDaing:

Your CPU cores shouldn't be clocked up to turbo speed as shown if that HWiNFO shot was taken at idle.

What power plan are you using, and what is its min/max processor state values set to?

I would (and do) use these for best performance on a Core i7 G73:
PCI Express/Link State Power Management: Off
Processor Power Management/Minimum Processor State: 0%
Processor Power Management/Maximum Processor State: 100%
Processor Power Management/Processor performance core parking min cores: 100%
Processor Power Management/Processor performance core parking max cores: 100%
ATI Graphics Power Settings/ATI PowerPlay Settings: Maximize Performance

Note: To get the core parking settings to appear in the power management advanced settings, see this link: How to adjust Core Parking from inside Windows 7

And no, SSDs don't speed up game play :p

Are you sure there's not a process (or many) grinding away in the background? At idle, the multipliers should be at 7x and your bars should be green. If the CPU is in use like it shows than it's no wonder you get lags :)

hwinfo tells me that i'm using a lot of cpu power on idle.
i check out task manager and it only gets up to 5% while typing this reply.

What HWiNFO32 shows you (and i'm not sure the idle readings are accurate) is the current clock and multiplier. Run prime95 and you'll see all 4 CPU bars going to x13 multiplier like they should. It's normal to see this in HWiNFO32 at idle, it doesn't mean that the CPU is in heavy use, it's more like the opposite. CPU-Z will report high multipliers for one core at low usage too, that's turbo boost clocking higher since you're not using all 4 cores (don't confuse that for the asus twin turbo).

I didn't say you were using a lot of CPU at idle, I was asking if there was something running using all that CPU.

    Here's a core i7 at idle...All cores at CPU LFM multiplier (7x)

    http://i967.photobucket.com/albums/ae153/msalsbery/HWiNFO32_at_idle.jpg

Unless there's things running using lots of CPU (which is NOT "idle") or you've specifically upclocked the CPU, then the cores should sit at 7x multiplier at idle.

You have a 0% minimum state with that don't you?

If its at 100% min/max then its normal having all 4 cores boosting to 2+Ghz.

Correct. 0% minimum, 100% maximum, which lets the Core i7 turbo boost do its thing without OS power management intervention. An ideal baseline.

I used to run 100%min/100%max and there was NO benefit...just a little more CPU heat and a little more electricity used. The Core i7s do just fine on their own. :)

Regardless, that's not even relevant. I was trying to get the person I was replying to at a baseline state to rule out some unknown process(es) hogging CPU. I wanted to see an idle state, not a CPU pegged at turbo speed. (S)he stated that using my settings saw the same thing in HWiNFO....which should not be the case at idle with those settings.

I do notice the overall system being a bit laggy with a 0% minimum state. Heck I even noticed it at 85% minimum lol. Scrolling with firefox stutters, and opening a couple of new tabs simultaneously is very noticeably slower at 0% minimum.

FWIW, I don't get much extra heat with 100% minimum, maxes out at 72C with heavy encoding, and generally the the high 40s low 50s in idle use.

What do we have here? Live action mileage varying. :D

Whatever makes you feel warm and fuzzy :)

Turbo boost happens way faster than is noticeable and apps like Firefox don't use anywhere close to enough CPU to notice so I don't know how much placebo effect is involved...

Even core (un)parking happens too fast to notice a lag except on poorly/wrongly written multi-threaded software.

Again, not relevant - my posts were specifically targeted at one poster.

    will download prime95 in awhile..

update: i tried downgrading from 11.4 to 11.2 (11.2 is my most stable catalyst) and now my fps is up to a regular of 60 fps. although it still says 11.4 :p

and it doesn't hang anymore. so far so good :D thanks guys! :D

i got an error that says "bad image" and that some .DLL's weren't working. i had to click on ok a lot of times because the error showed up a lot too. (i forgot what the 2 .dlls were. something to do with atk and the other one i forgot).

then it slowly shut itself down. :p

i was toying with a batman AA trainer then when this happened.

Errr, that sounds like disk corruption. Have you done a chkdsk (disk check) and a sfc (system file check)?

P.S. merged your posts above, gotta wait 24hrs to bump a thread. :p

Edit: I sort of glanced over this thread, sorry if this has already been asked, but did you run a memtest86+ pass (or three) to rule out bad RAM?

Yeah that's fine, the longer you let it run the more confident you can be about your RAM.

Technically yes but you'd need to back up the hard drive or pull some partitioning tricks to get it to work without losing all the data on the drive. It's much better to just burn a CD if you don't have a USB stick that you can use.
