    Hi,

So I bought two G73 laptops for the wife and myself and think they are the dogs bollocks, they really are pretty sweet.

They are the Asus G73JH, I was wondering if someone could recommend a good place to buy the 1080p screens for them, although the 1600x900 screens are good, I just feel that the higher resolution would be a lot better in the few games that I play on them.

And if someone could give me a basic idea of how much the screen's would cost that would be awesome as well.

    Thanks

I have been considering the same but if you intend to game and keep this laptop 900p native is a lot better for gaming performance. In some intensive games it is the difference between being above and below 30FPS.

So I am staying put :) Otherwise you can look into the AUO 1080P Matte or Glossy.

I upgraded mine from the 900p screen (had the terrible AUO 900p from the original BB models) to an AUO V0 1080p. It made a pretty big difference in visual quality particularly related to color clairity and veiwing angles. The FPS hit was fairly noticeable, and I can't run deus ex: hr maxed, but I personally like the extra screen real-estate, plus, right now, I use the G73 for work, and it helps a bit, cause I work in IT...

I think I paid roughly $100-$150 for the screen, and the install was pretty easy. There are a few threads about the 900p to 1080p upgrade and it's install, so do a few quick searches and you should find em.

I never thought there would be that much of a fps hit... you guys really gave me something now to think about..

BlueFalcon13.. is there a easy way to find out which screen you have in your machine? or is it a case of opening it up?

The 5870M seems to take a hit from it most likely because 900p to 1080p doesn't look like a lot but then when you work it out 1600x900 vs 1980x1080 that is 380x180 pixels or 68400 pixels. Most likely because even though the 5870M is a great card it does suffer slightly in the Pixel Fillrate area.

900P is good enough but it depends what you intend to do because if I was more focused on work and using the laptop for video editing etc I would switch to a 1080p if you intend to game into 2012 on it maxed out stay with 900p. ;)

Use HWINFO and it will give you all of the information from all of the hardware.

I agree with Dallers on this, if you want the performance to last, then keep the 900p screen. HWINFO is a great way to see your screen model, and tbh, after I get my work-paid M14x, I am contemplating putting the 900p back in, or selling my g73jh and just rebuilding my desktop. I like the G73 but performance is definitely limited compared to a desktop, as is the upgradability...

I know personally, the wife would flip if I wanted a new laptop in one year, but $250 for a gfx card for a desktop isn't nearly as hard to get her to sign off on...

That is extremely unfair ;) If I was going to get an AW that is the model I would get looks awesome, just the right size, good enough performance.

I have been considering swapping my JH for one even though its a performance hit and then I had to withdraw myself from the Awesomeness Vs Performance argument and stay put.

Hehe Dallers, the M14x is a consolation prize for being in an IT Department that supports 800+ user accounts with 4 people, and almost 40 remote sites o_O

I suppose they are actually not that costly over in the land of opportunity, in the land of rioting hooligans they are still around a £1k for a good one :(

I upgraded my screen to the CHI-MEI something or other. It cost me $137 with expedited shipping. New. Viewing angles are just awesome, as is the color and birghtness. I too have suffered from loss of performance on my 1080p screen (deus ex hr, metro 2033, etc). Then yesterday, I had and idea- I can still turn the resolution down on the games (back to 1600x900) and get roughly the same performance as I did on my old screen. Then, on games that aren't so demanding, I can crank it up and enjoy the high-def. Increases the resale value as well.
