Well i like the 5870 performance so far too + the AW thermal pads really helped to get the high end temps down. Idle temps are ok but load temps are way down.

AW notebook are still overpriced here so for me getting the 6970 working is a better option.

For most US ppl the AW is the best way to go.

Can't you just control the fan from Windows? I believe that's what the guys in the Alienware forum did with the m15x.

The way the registers for the fan speed work in the AWs and the G73 aren't the same, the author of HWiNFO mentioned this somewhere as did svl7. Since they don't work exactly in the same way, it is possible to control the fans on the AWs, but not on the G73, at least not yet.

You are saving maybe 100 USD at best, they wont cut the prices by that much on ebay take a look at the 6970M and 6990M difference. In the market prices don't go down by the performance, its all down to the SKU numbers. With the HD 7000 series mobile cards you are getting at-least 20-30 watts in lower power consumption plus much improved performance more 50% So that 100 USD you tried to save would be 100 USD well spent at one time. Just sayin'.

With the HD 7000 in the market in 2012, a 6990M would be a bad buy in every sense. Heat dissipation, power consumption and performance to the buck.

I know I am getting rid my of 6970Ms the moment them HD 7000s hit the market because of the power consumption benefits I can have. The current bills I pay will show the difference when I am places like Singapore/Asia in the very near future. Its the same even am in Texas.

People who get 580s for the meager 5-10% performance increase on small number of game titles don't realize they are paying 5-10 USD more per month if they are frequently putting their cards to use on a daily basis (I do). That adds up to many dollars at the end of the year. Those are serious concerns for many and most definitely for myself, some might not care since they may have deep pockets. I personal don't like such wastage even if I had the money.

So saving 100USD on that card to get the 6990Ms you are infact paying more down the road in terms of electricity bills. Its interesting how people chase the best price or maybe the fastest out there without giving power consumption a thought, they are paying for that after all and don't realize how power efficiency matters a lot in today's world economy.

Of course its all upto you on what you want. But just keep in mind about the power consumption factor.

One thing to note that once the 79xxM series or GTX 6xxM come up there will be plenty of 6970M, 6990M and 580M available from those who upgraded :)

Funny thing. I see talk about the 7000 and reasons not to buy the 6000 series but lets think for a sec. If the ppl here did not test it with the 6970 we would not know that this mod works at all.

So far we got only 1 working GPU. Id start to think about the 7000 after there are more GPU that do not die the next day + we have a way to control the fans.

dragon290513 i saw the same talk when the 6990 was about to come out. There were just a few used 6970 for sale after that and well most ppl will stick with the 6970 and 6990 as they can run all the games on high and ultra settings.

Metro and witcher might be more demanding but thats only 2 games. Other run fine.

the 5870 is an awesome card for today games, yea there are better cards and will come even more powerful cards, so you just have to think what you wanna play or why you want a better vga, i just wanted 2gb of video memory so that's why i move to this card, there is no super big difference in performance but with this card the games run with much stable fps and maxim out the settings without performance hit because of the ram, upgrade always gonna be expensive, if you have money problems forget them, if you want the best for your laptop then change your brand, move to alienware or sager or eurocomm they make more "upgradable" machines, what we see here is yes we can upgrade but is no easy or only for ppl that have experience doing this kind of things

The only game I currently have installed and play is Battlefield 3. The HD 5870M handles the game well enough at ultra settings(AA Deferred off and Post on low), so I'm satisfied. And to be quite honest after the relative disappointment with BF3 as a PC game I'm not too optimistic about wanting to continue PC gaming. That only leaves the potential performance gains I'd have with programs like 3ds Max, Revit, AutoCAD, etc. Overall, I've put enough upgrades into this machine, so I don't think more is worth it. However, it's good to know such an upgrade is possible. :)

dude I run 2x Air conditioners over 10 hours a day and a Fridge + lights + 55 plasma and I pay around 45-55$ a month dont think the GPU will add 5-10$.

In other hand I was running some stability test today after I install a fresh windows and did all the homework to optimize the laptop for my use i notice that HWinfo64 always showing GPU fan speed at 30% so i installed GPU-z and the same thing 30% but monitoring the fan rpm in HWinfo64 its increasing with temp increase so maybe the same thing is going with the 6970 cuz even on high rpm the GPU fan alwasy quite and not loud an my max temp is 78c in a 28c ambient.

can you test that thanatospy but with the sensor wire attached?
just want to make sure if the fan is showing any change in rpm with bench testing the GPU i use HWinfo64 from Dallers OC guide it works really good.

You also appear to live in oil country. I don't pay separately for electricity where I'm at (renting), but I'm pretty sure your level of power consumption would cost a couple hundred dollars in a United States urban area, such as Baltimore. Just a suspicion... I know a nice 5000 square ft house pays $1500/month for electricity. I saw the statements back when I was doing real estate business. Divide 5000 by 10 and $1500/10, and I suspect most people pay around $150-200/month for their living spaces.

That's because you are in Saudi Arabia.

I have been in the Middle east, Dubai (Deira, Karama & Bur Dubai) for 16 years. They have it good there for electricity but not so here in the USA or in most parts of the world.

    Not suspicion its true.

In the middle east price for electricity for the Per Hour is much lesser.

lol i forgot about that :)
indeed electricity is cheaper here in Saudi Arabia.
anyway hope thanatospy will do the test so i can order the card soon its proven that the fan rpm inceres normally even with HWinfo64 shows 30% or 40% all the time.

There are no need for any tests, none of the programs out there can read it properly in that case, the 30% and 40% numbers you see are incorrect.

At full speed the RPM is a little under 1900 rpm or so.

If you want true rpm measure you need to use an acoustic device and you will get the correct rpm on the fly.

Just pull the blue wire or opt not to do the mod. Its unreasonable to expect people to frequently open up their laptops so they can run tests for others.

The specs of the fan are as below:

    Brand Name: Delta
    Model Number: 13GNZW1AM010-2, KSB06105HB, 9J73
    Application Laptop Size: 17 inch
    Wire number: 4
    Electronic Data: DC5V 0.4A
    Noise: 39/43
    Fan Speed: 1650/1850 (rpm)

nah i thought thanatospy still testing :) however i will figure it out.
thanks anyway you sort most of the things so far.

I guess i will just get the card and test it my self cuz 50$ between the 6970 and the 6990 isnt that big gap so I will go for the 6990m

Don't you read the posts here?
This 30/40% value is a constant in vBios because the EC of the notebook motherboard is controlling all the fans by temp sensors!
The GPU itself has no control, other than the desktop cards.

The fans of JH have a max RPM of ~4600.
You can see the current rpm with HWInfo. It reads the right EC registers. But all said yet. ;)

HWiNFO's ability to report values on many systems was already called in into question for sometime now, the AW that I have seems to match the specs of the manufacturer. There maybe some other vendors it can work properly with but the G73JH? nope. Its wrong.

The manufacture themselves rate the rpms sub 1900s, they are the makers of the fans. Not HWiNFO.

4600rpm are easily loud, the G73JH's delta fans are hardly in the class of "loud" at full blast. They are far weaker fans than the forceon fans in M18X AW rated at 3900rpm for exmaple.

Some applications work well for some systems while it hardly works for most others. Just like GPUz, it works great for most desktop cards, but for any mobile system it cant report the rpms properly because the fans are not MXM controlled the mobo controls them via EC.

    No problem here you go:

    Laptop Cooling fan (cooler) With heatsink for A S U S K72DR Series - 13GNZW1AM010-2 - Detailed info for Laptop Cooling fan (cooler) With heatsink for A S U S K72DR Series - 13GNZW1AM010-2,laptop fans,Laptop Cooling fan (cooler) With heatsink for A S

Don't worry with the last 4 letter and digits they are only vendor specific casing codes for housing the fans based on the chassis used. Those alpha-numerals determine the housing's screw hole alignments and other appendages for vendor/chassis specific fitting. Not the spec of the fan solenoid.

The base fan is what you are interested in.

Its the same family of fans for all KSB06105HB

They are only 0.4A and at 5Volts

Thats just too weak, the solenoids on the delta fan for the ASUS are just too inferior for that.

As for loudness you haven't heard the M18X :) that is loud, the ASUS fans pales in comparison. I have both systems

Delta doesn't provide official datasheets on their site as the KSB series has various housings, but the fan is the same for all such families of KSB06105HB

Sound of fans are a property of rpm and/or the design of the blades (aerodynamics/acoustics). The M18X has higher rpms and blower type arrangement, which makes it even more louder then usual.

The G73JH fans are regular blades and low rpm, no where close to being as loud as the M18Xs for example.

But really, sound of fans can be deceiving until rpms and fan blade constructions are taken into consideration.

What is the loudest fan rpm that G73SW normally has?
Mine during gaming is usually 3800rpm-4300rpm on GPU. Is that considered normal or too loud?

Please provide the part number/Model plus manufacturer's name and I can look it up. Those numbers you might have seen in HWiNFO or other apps are unreliable.

We can get the correct specs from suppliers who have direct relationships with the companies in China and Taiwan.

Fan loudness depends on several factors as explained in the few posts directly above.

Okay so let me start by saying you are the *ish*!!! Im glad to see someone got it 100% fully functional :D good stuff , a couple questions did you notice a huge fps gain or performance gain from the 5870? Also was anything software wise limited or not working after upgrading the vid card? and how much would you say the entire upgrade cost?(money wise, and time wise)

Hi!, i did notice the increase of fps on max settings on games@1920x1080, games run smoother, the cost, well i get the card for 500$ a few months ago (when it was new release), same for the cpu, i think is ok because to have similar performance gain in a new system gonna cost more than 1000$, today you can get a new cpu and vga for less than 600$

Just out of curiosity, do you have 3dmark vantage score. I did manage to get a Clevo card at it's intended clock speeds using ATT, but the 3dmark score was lower than it should have been.

    Thanatospy, congratulation to your success!
You shared with the rest of G73JH community your experience with the pioneer work of successful R&D over the AMD 6970 card implantation into your G73JH unit and you mentioned you modified the AW 240W power brick.
I was following almost the whole tread since May when it was initiated, but I didn't notice any information about your 240W power unit (perhaps I just missed it  ). Could you explain in more details what did you do with the AW charger to get it work with your G73JH and basically how you obtained it (from DELL?)?
How is it cool/warm comparing with the OEM 150W unit?

Thanks man, yes I'm using this psu: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045XKB0C/ref=oh_o06_s00_i00_details, to make it work only you have to disassemble both psu and change the cables so you can have the connector for you asus :), in this particular psu you have to watch because it have 3 cables, 1 is the +, the - and the LED cable, just be careful when you solder the cables to it, the board over it says the right one, but you know sometimes the emotion let us make mistakes

The 5870 is an amazing card bro, like always in this world after a few months there is something better, right now the best card is the 6990m, and im sure soon is gonna be a better card again and again etc :)

Nice to see that the GPU is still up and running strong Thanatospy :)

Well my 2 weeks will be over tomorrow and hope i get a call from the shop. I also have orderd a second JH and R3 heatsink. The reason is that the JH uses only 2 heatpipes and the R3 has 3 pipes on the GPU....when i did my mod i was not able to bend the R3 heatpipes as they were flat and well the pipe just lost shape. So only 2 pipes were on the GPU.

Good news is that last week i got news that i was not the only one who had a faulty card someone else had the same result in a R3. So i just had bad luck with the GPU i got.

Thanotospy i have a question for you did you solder a new mount for the GPU on the motherboard or just added someting under it for support ?

you can see the STOCK gpu support but turned back, i remove the springs from the screws and ad a thermal pad to the support so it can be a little bit higher so the screws can squeeze the heatsink and the gpu

Here you gonna find the screws, just take off the pads and you will find them:

Thx for picture but i was asking about the GPUs mounts that are on the motherboard. The 2 towers that hold the card in place with 2 screws. The JH GPU is wider and one of the screw locations does not reach the 6970. Did you resolder the tower or just added something under the card for support ?. When i first tested it i just added a support under it but you could see that the card was not parallel with the motherboard. Heatsink did press the card a bit down but still not as it should have been. So i just made a new mounting point aout of plastic.

Nice you got the same cooling pad as i got (zalman) :D

This is awesome and fantastic job!

Does this mean that it might be possible to use a 7970m on a G73?

How hard is it to do this? This is something I would be interested in doing, on a scale of 1 to 10, how hard is it to do this upgrade?

6990 is going to push your power available to the limit, I think the 6970 is as good as you are gonna get.

Threadbump but simply amazed at how you upgraded your gpu in this machine. Do you think you'd be able to write up a process guide for implementing the gpu into the G73JH? And then someone who is doing the method will supplement your guide with pictures of the steps :D This brings life to a slowly dying laptop. Thanks loads Thanatospy. Even if you don't do a guide, I'll be re-reading from page 60 to 80 till my g73jh finally arrives here :D
