again that happens with every new cycle. The low to medium end stuff will be rebranded but the high end, worth mentioning will take longer, until at least april/may

    Mount again
    [IMG]
I sanded the heatsink abit ...virst 600 grade water sandpaper and then 1200 grade water sandpaper
    [IMG]
Starting to go putting it back together
    [IMG]

Well its 20:29 here and ....... Im done. Just need to wait for 10 min or so for it to sit The GPU thermal pads to take shape and the IC7.

So i have done all that i can do. Took my time to swap. Checked every thing 10 times before moving on. It should be a good swap..... ou well 3 min and then the first boot

Installing drivers....Fans at 40% and the GPU widget is showing "GPU not found" Need reboot.

    Edit:

Clocks are a 100/150 and still no GPU in the widget. Saphire Txx found the GPU and turned the clocks up automaticly to the 6970. I am uninstalling old drivers and will see what happons. So far works and temps are at 30c

21:27 so last few tests before I stop for today. So the GPU clocks are all over the place. Stock are at 100/150 like i said before ...sometimes i get 400/900 and when i turn on clocking tools (just turn the program on.... no clocking) i get 680/900. Might need to flash the vbios to get stable clock.

This is only a theory but might to low clocks kill the GPU ? If i open a game or a video then the voltage gos up but clocks stay 1100/150. any ideas ?

Will no do any bench test after i get the clock speed correct:

    Last update from me today:
Strange the Vbios is correct it has clock speeds set for battery, high performance and optimal. Battery save is 100/150. But at the moment it is jumping from optimal to battery save and high performance.
Strange....ou well. It works but need some more testing before I hit it with everything i got :)

Windows device manager shows the card and says its working, Even CCC shows the card is there and get info but all other software to monitor it shows that is is jumping clock speed all over the place.

    All ideas are welcome.

I had to use Ati Tray Tools to bring the one i tested to 680/900, potentially killed the card when i flashed a dell vbios on it. Clocked properly for a few secs in furmark, temps seemed ok then no more display. Switched back to the 5870, still no display, i let it sit a bit and everything was back to normal.

Well i got the same Vbios form dell that came with the GPU and the clock speed there should be OK but.....The motherboard has no idea what is should run at lol :D Ill wait for a reply form our master GPU guru Thanatospy before i go on killing the GPU :D

Hmm damn it, we need to crack the bios of the G73. Really would like to see what they have hidden there. There cant be a "white-list" as the G73 knows what it has got in it. Its something else that is making the clock speed go crazy.

Well so far we got 1 and a half G73JH/6970 in the world :D (mine being the half as have not benched it )

    Just my thought:
    - have you firefox running with hardware acceleration?
    - try to disable and enable the gadget

As I did some research in the following thread, there seems to be different motherboard revisions.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...otherboard-model-no-question.html#post8233108
Yours (golden) should be an earlier one. Mine is IMHO the latest (0D, green PCB).

Your temps seems good so far. Later you can think about undervolting too.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/576540-6970m-undervolting.html

    Btw.
My ordered heatsink is on the way. :)

Nice job DH48!!! your gpu cooler looks so cool i love the job you did, congratulations again :), well looking at your problem, i think is a vbios or driver problem, i don't think your mainboard are the problem, the only problem from it can be the fan thing, doesn't matter what psb revision you have, have you try to reflash the vbios to the one i used? for the windows try to use the driver cleaner and reinstall it just to make sure everything is fine, if you need something just let me know bro, and plz don't run any bench or game just be sure everything is fine then run them

    Thx :)

What bios are you on ?

    @ tilla.

Firefox kicks makes the GPU spike to 680/900 for a sec and then back etc.

Edit: Well seems that the vbios has no vendor on it. It is unknown to all programs. Even Radeon vbios editor shows the vendors as unknown.

Strange it when i set the fan speed to auto with MSI afterburner the Value changes....but only just ...30-40%. I can set it to what ever value with Saphire OC tools and HWinfo registers it but the fans do not. If you look at one of my screenshots i posted then the fan is at 91% but only 3RPM :D

The card is working but it has a mind of its own. I read all the posts of Thanatospy and it seems we have the same vbios version. Only difference is that you got a clevo and i got a dell card. Does your bios register the brand in radeon bios editor ?

Fan changing with regular GPU tools is senseless because the EC controls this stuff!

And are your fans really running at almost full speed?
Or did you manually changed this?

Had you changed clocks with Overdrive before? Try to reset the settings in CCC, this deletes the xml-profile with old core/mem/voltage values.

    e:
I have a Dell vBIOS here. There the sub vendor is also declared as 0x1028 (unknown). Weird.

I got that part. Just saying that EC is controling the fan speed but not as it should. Some values might be off... for instance Dells 25% increase could translate to asus as 0.25% ...well you get the idea.

Might be going crazy but i think i heard it slow down and speed up a few times yesterday.... :D

I did not change enything at the moment stock 213 bios and the vbios that was on the GPU.

Could the Power 4 gear make the clocks spike like that ? 100/150 should be battery save

Ill get back to cracking on the notebook after work.

    Edit again:

Found this on AW forum :

    http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/5079/gpuz.gif

The M15x seemed to have a throttling problem too (Solved with new bios). Ill try to get a log file from GPU-Z at idle to see if throttles at random.

Did the flash....but i can not set the clocks (i can but 700/900 and press accept but the clocks stay at 100/150). Like i said before its got a mind of its own.

Ill do a few more tests and then i have to run something (game, movie ...what ever)

Temps seem ok. Just in case migh try WoT in window mode so i can keep an eye on the temps and stats.

Well it survived WoT at 680/900 and temps were ~70. Ill try furmark later.

And i can not set clocks it does it on its own. No load is 100/150 for me

Just tested Alice: Madness returns all maxed 1080 physics on high....smoooooooooooth as butter :D Temps max 60c with the 5870 high physics made the game lag a bit.

Edit: Well the card works and clocks work like this: If i set the clock to 700/960 then the GPU automaticly clocks itself if needed. I start a game it is at 680/900 and if FPS drops a bit it goes to the set clock speed. I am starting to like this :)

Appart from the fan speed this GPU seems to work really good :)

I learned a good lesson .....always take you time. Think and measure 10 times and cut once. The problem with my first attempt was the GPU copper plate i think as that thing needs to be really level or it will stress the GPU and will not allow the heatsink to cover the other components.

Now i need to find all my friends who know something about programming and Bios. If we can crack the fan speed then we got a really good monster G73 :D

Everyone says the fan speed is controlled in the BIOS but I have looked through it and see nothing that indicates how you would control it. It's frustrating as can be. Maybe the programs used are not reading the fan speed correctly. Can you hear it kick the fan speed up as the GPU temp rises?

Well it might be hidden. If you look at my stats then it cant even read the fan RPM so it has to do something with the GPU to and not only the mobo.

I still don't get it. I see 4192 and 4422 rpms at your last pic.
Forget about the value at GPU FAN.
Are the fans really running that fast or is this an issue just with the 6970?
Now my lowest value at EC GPU fan is ~2600 and switch to 0, if the fan stops.
I know about the fact, that the rpm value might be not accurate. But you see the changing.
My CPU fan is silent at idle and even stops.

The following pic is from my MSI 5870 switch attempt.
You see, the fans were running full speed. HWInfo says so. And I heard this very clearly! Like a tornado.
But the temps were good.

But I will check it myself next days, should get my spare heatsink tomorrow.

    @Inferno
You don't see the interesting parts (modules) of the BIOS with this AMI tool.
There must be some other modules too. Like Twin power control, hot keys, fan settings ... This is hidden and not easy to decrypt.

Well we could say that the bios is locked for us. Think AW had a locked bios for some time too until someone or was it AW who opened it up for moding?

Well the speed might be correct. Strange is that in the pic you sent bought fans are at the exact speed but my CPU fan can bee from 4000-4500 but still is fast.

To me it sounds more like the fans are at 75% rather then 100% and like i said before i can hear some fan speed change but its really faint. Strange thing is i am starting to get used to the fan sound :D my old desktop even makes more noise then the notebook :)

Maybe should try to post on the ROG forum and get help from the ROG crew

    @ Inferno

Yes that is one way to get ppl to buy newer notebooks but as history is shown us if you start the snowball rolling then there is no way to stop it :)
I still remember my motorola milestone...aaa a good phone .....and locked bootloader:/ for 1 and a half year ....until some good ppl hacked it open and we were able to mode, overclock, update android ect.

LOL ok is it me or is ROG site down? i get "Error. Page cannot be displayed. Please contact your service provider for more details. (1)" .... or should i disconnect and run  :D

32xxp is a decent score tbh for this uncompleted mod its seems to work just more than fine, I have one question DH48 do you use the stock AC adapter or you got the moded AW 240w or targus 180w for this mod.

You can count me in. I think your right about posting over in the ROG forum and see if someone can help. With up to 16GB of ram, 2 hard drive bays, blu-ray, a 920XM overclocked and GPU upgrades these laptops will be great for years to come.

I almost forgot to mention I was checking my 5870 fan speed and it's locked at 30% under full load 79c-80c 825/1100. vBIOS od2 BIOS 213 programs HWinfo64 & Everest Ultimate

Nop the stock 150W AC adapter.

Well it seems to very good acutally all the bench test did not go over 74c and this is with 750/1000.

Only thing now is i need to mode the bottom case so it get air as at the moment the cooling solution is horrible. Well ok its suck air from the small cracks but come on they should take air from the bottom of the case like sager and eurocom. Also the CPU fan suck air from the top and not the bottom like the GPU.

My idea is not as extreeme as thanatospys mode. it just a new drilled holes and a mesh to make i look nice :)

Im still thinking 3 fans. GPU and CPU need to take the air from the bottom of the case and a 3.rd low RPM fan that suck air into the case. I foun a good thermal fan control schematics that i might try to but to gether so the fan is controled buy the temp change. It it work i might even try to pin on on the GPU and let that control the fan speed.....if we can not get the fans to work via bios.

Just played the new batman game for 2h on clocks 800/1000 to keep it safe. The temps did not go over 75C but have to keep in mind that the fan speed it almost 4500RPM too so normally it should be 50% or so.

Game runs smooth on the last 5870 settings that it was lagging a bit. :)

cant wait for the 79XX series to come out. even though it is a re-brand going from 6790 to 7990 should be worth it :) well just have to wait and see :)

Where are the specs on the 7990m? I heard it is not re-branded and is new architecture.

Just typing from my JH with it's new heart. :D
    So far I'm happy.

Fans are working normal. The GPU fan cycles between off till 48°c and on when reaching 51°C. So it must be an option of the vBIOS, and not the EC.
With the 5870 the steps were 47°C ON and 43°C OFF.

Got GPU observer working after I had the same prob at first. You have to disable the gadget, kill the sidebar.exe, start the sidebar and install the latest version 3.7
OrbLog Blog Archive GPU Observer – Sidebar Gadget
    It works! ;)

So far, my girl needs time too.

    e:
    Short 3DM11 run.
No points, because I have an older version.
Put it on the NC3000, backcover is still open.

Welcome to the club tilla ;)

Hmm that is odd and good news in a way. What bios and vbios are you running ?
Vbios looks the same but bios ? 213 ?

The fans on your G73 work almost perfect :) . The lowest i saw was then i started the comp. and then it was 3700 something RPM.

    So now we got 3 .....who´s next ? :D

THX for the tip tilla. Turns out i had the 3,6 and 3,7 installed and that was the fault. As soon as i uninstalled the 3,6 it started working.

Well, i'll see if i can get my 6970m tested to check if it is dead or not. If it ends up that it isn't dead, i'll make another attempt.

Well at least now we know what killes the cards and that is a badly placed heatsink. :) your next attempt is going to be a success. :)

Finaly got Riva Tuner to work with the GPU and got some Fan Duty cycles form the 6970. I was not able to test it yesterday but will give it a try after work.

If someone can get the info of the 5870 it would be realy appreciated. It might to the trick but well i will not know until i get the values off of a 5870.

If you do not know how to get Rivatuner to work then you need Radeons vbios editor tool and there is a option on the right side to enable Riva to read 5xxx and 6xxx cards :)

    You mean Riva ?

It should be undel low-level system settings and then FAN tab. I will ask you to do a reboot to get the correct values. after reboot you can press detect if it does not get the values.

Also get the digitaly signed driver for it
    RivaTuner - 64bit support

Here you can get rivatuner and the 64 signed driver for it. :)

so so far we have 3x 6970 succesfuly swaps till now.
    here are the results :

thanatospy : first JH with 6970m and had to manualy force the fan to run at 100% to control the temp with some casing mods.

DH48 : second JH with 6970m with a well planned Heatsink mod , manage to get it work and with decent temp with no casing mods and somehow riva tuner manage to control the fans but not tested.

@tilla : third JH with 6970m gpu an almost perfect swap.

I really hope that we see more success in swapping, I put my upgrade on hold for now working on other stuffs in RL.

The information is not available. I might be doing something wrong. Maybe my vBIOS is causing it to not read correct. Next to customize it says No Additional Information Available
