So I picked one of these up. I got a good deal had a $400 Best Buy gift card (due to Best Buy messing up a purchase a few months ago) so got it for about $800. Now since the screen is only 1600x900 I want to upgrade the screen to the 1900x1080. I found the screen for sale on http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/ASUS/G73JH/.
I just want to know, is this something that can just be replaced easy or is there any modification that I need to do?
Thanks in advance.
-
It won't be easy, and it might void your warranty.
-
I think it'd work assuming it's actually for the G73 and has the right connector. Wouldn't be that hard- I've replaced screens on laptops in the past. Just be aware that there are more than likely antennae and such up in the casing and you'll need to have some patience taking it apart.
Refer to the disassembly guide- link in my sig. Good luck and let us know how you get on. -
I figured that it would void it, but not too worried about that aspect at this time. I have changed LCD screens on my previous laptops, but usually for the same one that originally came with it, though a pain but manageable. I know that the 5870 can handle the higher resolution, just curious if the laptop would see it right away or if there is anything else that would need to be done to get it working.
-
Oh yeah, if you connect it the laptop won't have an issue with it. Just that the physical install is generally tedious.

-
Cool. When I get the screen in and replace it I will update this thread with any caveats that come up (if any).
-
I am interested in knowing how this will turn out as well. Good luck on the upgrade!
-
Picking one up and doing a warranty voiding mod so soon? I'd wait to make sure you don't have a reason to return it before attempting the swap, but that's me.

Please take before and after pics for us...apples to apples!!! Thanks!

If you are willing to pull the trigger, I'll point you in the right direction.

Funny how the 1600x900 screen is only $4 less than the 1920x1080 -
I'm just curious on what exact panel they're using. Might be able to get it for cheaper from ebay..
-
The 1080p screen is HannStar HSD173PUW1 which ironically is the same screen that can be found on the Sager NP8760 / Clevo W870CU.
So I guess the Sager/Clevo people saying that it has a better screen must just be a placebo effect - pay more = see better screen. -
something is wrong: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3662/asus-g73jha2-affordable-xlsized-gaming/9
I suspect that might not be the screen they were manufactured with.
Edit: fixed, that's what happens when I type too fast -
Check your link. -

Can't wait to hear from this one dude..I'm just reluctant on taking a plunge for the screen coz it doesn't say what brand of panel they're selling..
-
Apparently screencountry carries AU Optronics compatible part for G73. Has anybody had any experience with this panel?
-
That said, I've had an AUO panel in a previous Macbook Pro that was fantastic, so their 1920x1080 panel may be a winner.
I'm extremely interested in upgrading the screen to a better quality 1920 x 1080 panel, but would prefer find a vendor selling the actual panels used in the A1/A2 series. -
My G73 came today and it does have the 1600x900 AUO panel (which kinda sucks), the problem is I can't find anybody who's selling hannstar 17.3" 1080p anywhere on the net. Guess I might take a plunge on the AUO's.

You sure you don't want to wait a few months? 3 or 4 months of break-in period. Just in case a random component goes bonkers.
Also, good luck opening the screen bezel, that thing looks friggen burley. -
Darn right you are..This is my first asus laptop so I don't really know how reliable the components are
-
It's tedious and you will have to be willing to completely disassemble the laptop. it might be usefull to find or purchase a manual for repairs from ASUS manufacturers have these they just hide them well and charge a nominal fee for them.
Assuming that this is legit, you won't have to worry at all the upgrade will go smoothly -
I do have the disassembly instruction, it was posted here a few weeks ago. It doesn't look different than any other laptop disassembly procedure, but I could be wrong.
-
I finally had some time to swap it out. Though horrible screen shots you will be able to see with the 1600x900 screen on the home page of the discussions you will only see 6 sub forums the last one being the Linux forum. With the 1920x1080 you will 9 sub forums with the last one being Desktop hardware.
It truly is nice with more real estate

Swapping the screen only took about an hour as you don't have to take apart the whole laptop which is nice.
Also the screen is brighter and the viewing angles and like night and day. -

Those pictures don't do justice. I would assume the 1080 screen looks a lot better.

I don't understand why people who use the internet would be compelled to shop at Worst Buy.
This could have been easily avoided if you had bought the G73JH online. -
Or.... you can save $300 bucks by doing it yourself by buying it from Best Buy instead. Also, the Best Buy models seem to be suffering from GSOD problems a hell of a lot less then the internet models.
Looks like Online FAIL to me..... -
I only payed about 70 more than I would have at BB and that is for the A2. Granted it was on sale with Bing. But the point is I didnt pay 300 more.
The BB model suffers from as much problems as any other G73, technically worse if you consider the AUO vs LG. Only thing good going for the BB model is the time it would take to replace it if it had problems, which so far a lot of ppl that bought from BB had to replace theirs at least once.
All G73s are the exact same, so please dont be spouting what you do not know. -
cshiels can you please tell us where did you buy it and what part No. screen did you get.
Thanks! -

There's only one connector actually--right here:
