    Hi,

I currently have a G51JX-A1 and love it. But a local store here have one (and only one) G74SX-A1 on sale at 1280.00 CA$ + tx.

I can sell my G51JX-A1 to a friend for 700$. So to put simply, is the upgrade worth it?

Or should I wait a few years when my G51 can't play any new games and get a new laptop at that time? I can compare the specs and read the reviews of the G74, but I wanted to have opinions from Asus gamers :)

    Thanks!

It will be a big jump in performance from your 360M GTS that is for sure and overall it might be a good deal but without knowing how your currency works or its worth against the £ or how much you earn etc I cannot comment if it is personally worth it for you. Gaming wise from the 360M to the 560M its a big jump.

Yeah, to final price would be 1500$ (canadian), which is about 1072 euros (google says 1CA$ = 0.715 euro)

I paid about 1600$ for my G51 at the time of purchase, so selling it for 700$ would mean a loss of 900$ in 1.5 years.

Yeah, that's a good point. I mean if it was not from that deal, I would not really think about changing my laptop. I played Witcher 2 on Low but still had a lot of fun.

But I'm worried that new games will become more and more unplayable. BF3, ME3 to name a few. Of course I would love to play Witcher 2 on High settings, but not sure it's worth all that money.

May I ask what store is offering the g74sx-a1 at that price? I just bought one 2 weeks ago and it was $1600 on sale from $1799. At $1280 before tax that is a steal.

Does this store have a website?

    Well... I did it :)
My mother wanted my G51 really bad (her laptop was old and broken and she loved the design, power and backlit keyboard of mine), so she bought it 700$, which is what's left paying on it.

I'm now the owner of a brand new G74Sx-A1!! Which was on sale by 33%. I paid total 1460$, taxes included and normal price here is ~2050$ (tx included).

@Cypz: The store is called "Centre Hi-Fi". It's a franchise in Quebec, Canada. The deal was on a flyer (not even on their website) and it was written that only 2 G74 were available at that price per store. My store here only had one. The flyer is now updated on the site, you can try contact them. Check on the last page of the flyer.

Nice. Congrats on your new notebook. I would not want to go through the trouble of returning mine at this point. I have a clean install with Win7 Pro on a M4 SSD 128gb with one 750gb 7200x data drive. Latest BIOS update and latest drivers. I ordered an Intel 6300 to upgrade my wireless card. Everything runs great. :)

Nice! I don't have money for a SSD at the moment, but I'm considering it. I do have a few questions for you though:

1- Why did you upgrade the wifi card? Is the stock one bad? Should I too?
2- What mouse do you use? I have a Performance MX from Logitech and I'm experiencing some glitches that were not there on my G51. When Windows is working (like during Windows Updates), sometimes the mouse movement becomes jerky for a few seconds then comes back ok. Just like if the communication between the mouse and the USB key wasn't great. I read on some forums that the MX could have that problem when cell phones were around. I still have to test that (my cell was on me), but it never happenend to me on my G51...

I'll start a thread on the subject after my testing if I haven't found the answer.

    Thanks!

Seriously, I have a Crucial M4 SSD and it made my system fly. It's really noticeable for just general performance. I boot up into windows in about 20 seconds, and windows is ready to go within a second of when I can see the screen. Highly recommended!

I'm also curious why everyone upgrades the wireless card to the Intel 6300. I don't even use wireless, so I suppose it wouldn't help me much... Although since it's only $22 shipped on eBay, I may pick one up and install it for the heck of it.

It's a cheap upgrade, and getting 5GHz support is awesome for me. My neighborhood is flooded with 2.4, and none on 5GHz. \o/

On a side note, Sprint must have updated service in my area, because I can pick up 4G now. \o/

Does changing the card voids the warranty?

hehe. Yeah I'm kind of afraid to void a warranty on a laptop like that. Like, I don't want to overclock it, cause if something goes wrong later, I don't want to be held responsible hehe
