I got the upgrade to Windows 8 (I'm back on 7 now) on my ASUS G73JH and all went well until I tried out gaming. Almost every game I tried ran at a lower FPS, particularly games with the Frostbite 2 game engine (BF3 & MoH).

For example, I used to play BF3 on the highest settings but with Windows 8 I had to put it on medium for it to be playable. All my other games dropped anywhere from 5-15 fps (estimate). Some games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Red Orchestra 2 just crashed.

I had the latest AMD drivers, BIOS 213, and all the Windows updates but gaming was still poor.

Keep in mind, this is only for games. Windows 8 was actually faster for everyday programs & general use.

Is anyone else having problems like this? I can't find a answer anywhere online...

what series card do you have? 5870m I'm guessing? I would have tried different driver's out, but the 12.11 drivers beta 3 have been working great for me so far on my 6990m with both windows 7 and 8.

I upgraded my G73JH to Windows 8 about a week ago...and my gaming performance has not changed from Windows 7. I play mostly BF3 and some Borderlands 2.

I had a number of other issues though with my upgrade, leading me to have to wipe my C:\ drive and do a clean Windows 8 install (still having a few crashes each day where the PC just seems to freeze).

When not freezing/crashing - haven't noticed any change in gaming performance.

Yah I have mobility HD 5870 and used the 12.10 drivers (which im using right now on 7 & works fine). I didn't try the 12.11 drivers but thats something I'll look in to.

@cwilliams222 - Have you updated you video drivers since you got 8? I forgot to say that before I did the video driver upgrades it seemed gaming worked fine (did a quick BF3 level), but after I got the AMD drivers updated to a Windows 8 compatible version (12.10) I had issues. I would have kept the existing drivers but Control Center didn't work.

But I never had any freezing issues or crashes... except when I tried to run a couple games that wouldn't work.

Also, before I upgraded to 8 I did do a clean install of 7 a month before but didn't reinstall much of the original ASUS drivers. The only drivers I reinstalled were the Power4Gear, ATK hotkeys, GPU drivers, and Audio. Didn't do any others since it all worked fine. I feel this may have been a reason why 8 had issues with gaming... idk for sure.

Even now, back on 7, I haven't installed any of the ASUS drivers except the few i mentioned earlier and yet the computer works better then when I first got it.

Your degraded gaming performance may be due to a non-updated gfx card driver, please check that out!

Yay! I fixed it... though I'm not sure how.

Basically I made sure all my drivers were fully updated before my Windows 8 Upgrade. BUT, unlike last time, I have not yet updated my video drivers to the Windows 8 versions, but am keeping them at the latest 12.10 Windows 7 drivers. Last time after I updated to Windows 8 version video drivers it seemed things started to go wrong.

If it works, don't fix it. I guess...

Update: Ok I did get the latest video drivers just to see if it would affect performance. I didn't. It still works good. So... I have no idea why the first time I got Windows 8 it lagged... I did install as many as the ASUS drivers as possible this time around, so perhaps that did it. Or maybe there was a Windows update that fixed it... idk. But it works.

    Thanks!

Better to do a clean install since G73JH I think will support EFI bootup. That requires a clean install.
