Cool, I just upgraded my G55VW with a mSATA the other morning. Its amazing how much one upgrade can effect the entire system. It runs so much faster now, I love it.

With the assistance of your awesome videos I was able to install my new msata drive. I also replaced the 5400 for a 7200 since I already had it open. My question is how do you get it to boot to USB so I can install the OS? I checked the BIOS and dont see where I can make this change.

    Thanks,

Its in there, make sure the device is plugged in before you go into BIOS.

Plug in your device and hit ESC when booting (ASUS splash logo) and you should get the boot menu. From here you can select your USB device. If it doesn't show up, you may need to enable "USB legacy support for HDDs" in the BIOS.

Do you know if you void the warranty doing this? Did you encounter any "warranty void" stickers during the process?

    Great video, btw :)

Not going to say yes or no to the voiding the warranty as I don't want that liability, but I will say the only "Void" sticker is located on the #4 screw of the cpu heatsink hold down.... so unless you removed that screw and the heatsink, which you don't need to do for any reason other than cpu swap or repaste, you won't break any "Void" stickers.

On that note, with proper care and attention, I see no reason it would even be possible to tell the machine has been opened.... other than the fact they will find a mSATA drive duct taped in place ha

The safe answer though is of course yes, this requires almost complete disassembly so you are on your own... your mileage may vary

Thanks for the answer. Great, that sound promising then :)

Perhaps not the place to be asking this, but have anybody tried installing hackintosh (mac) on it? The individual components suggest that would be possible, but since it's not possible on its sibblings g55/75vw I'm guessing it won't work on this one either...

Very nice! Thanks for the video it helped out tremendously. I seem to have made a huge mistake somewhere though... I just recently put in a Mushkin aSATA much like you did, and now the G46 isn't turning on at all. Power button comes on but nothing seems to be happening. I have also tried taking out the aSATA and leaving it basically like stock but once again nothing happens. I have triple checked all the connections and everything is plugged in. Any ideas what it could be?

A friend of mine is having lots of trouble installing a new hard drive in his g46vw, the install went all great but upon boot the boot menu shows up but there is no usb dvd burner to select so he can't start installing the new operating system. (1) question, - How important is it to have the g46vw connected with the powercord in the outlet, as his waiting for a new AC power supply to arrive.
Currently his only running on battery only!

    thanks

Sweet mother of mercy, why did Asus make it so difficult/involved to swap out the HDD in this model??

They don't want it to be user serviceable as far as I can tell.

I've just installed a Mushkin mSATA myself on my G46VW and encountered the same problem.
The laptop managed to turn on after I've reset the BIOS by taking out the small battery in the middle of the Motherboard.

However, I can't get the SSD to be recognized by the bios. Did you get it working somehow?

Sounds like that msata isn't compatible. Did you copy the oem drive to your msata drive? If so try disabling secure boot, and enabling csm launch/pxe or whatever.

I've read people having good results with crucial msata drives. Did you have to tape down the msata drive? I don't like the idea of having to tape down the msata for it to hold.
