I am purchasing an Asus G74SX-DH71 and want to replace the dvd burner with one of these. LG Electronics BT10N 6x SATA Internal Slim Blu-ray Disc BT10N

an LG Electronics BT10N 6x SATA Internal Slim Blu-ray Disc ReWriter. I see the bezel on the Asus has a slightly angled end to it, will this be a probelm when I reinstall the new unit. My older HP laptop doesn't look like ti would work as its a completely different bezel and doesn't look like I can replace it.

    thanks in advance.

your best bet is to see what other members with that kind of BR writer fitted the G74 ,or you can contact BTOTech or xoticpc to see what they are fitting in their custom laptops

I replaced the one in the G73. There are two types of burners you can buy. One of them is very thin... that's the wrong one. The one you want is 12.7mm. There is another slim drive that is even thinner but it's for blade servers and things like that. The one you will find 99% of the time is the regular old 12.7mm drive. Any of them will fit most laptops. You have to remove the front bezel from yours and install it on the new one so that it mates up to your laptop casing correctly. There will be one or more brackets on your drive that you have to transfer to the new drive too.

I bought a Panasonic UJ240 for my old Gateway 7811FX a while ago. When I picked up my G74 SX I had no problem swapping it over and has worked flawlessly. I just swapped bezels and it fit like a charm.

They are held on by two small plastic tabs. You'll see then when you remove the ODD. Be careful though, they are a bit fragile so take your time instead of going with plain brute force.

There is a video floating around here of someone removing the bezel of a G73 optical drive. I don't know if I can find it. I didn't really find it very helpful but it did prove to me that it can be taken off without breaking it. I use a small jeweler's screwdriver to gently release the tab on one side and then on the other side to slip it off. I've removed and reinstalled it several times. Whenever I RMAed my laptop, I put the original back in because I didn't want to lose my BDRom if they replaced the whole computer for some reason.

Ironically, I had to send it in again on RMA last month and when I got it back they had messed up my bezel a little bit. It doesn't clip on perfectly anymore but it is good enough that it's not worth another RMA.

Please see this post for instructions. It's a G73 but yours should be the same or very very similar:

I just installed the LG bluray writer. It was a breeze. The bezel snapped right off and the old one back on the new writer, it fits perfect. Windows found the new drive no problem and I just finished burning my restore discs onto regular 4.7 GB DVD's. I have yet to try burning bluray's but that will come. So far so good.

It took a bit of searching for sure to find something that might work. I did find a Panasonic on Amazon but went with the LG model # LGBT10N Bluray writer from BH Photo. Like I said it was a snap to install, just some screws to undo inside the ASUS and also figuring out that the drive itself has a bracket fastener that needs to be unattatched/unscrewed then reattatched to the new drive before reinserting back inside the laptop. This is explained in some of the tutorials on youtube. The hardest part was making sure I didn't lose any of the screws as they are extremely tiny and dropping one onto my carpeting would not be easy to find (I've done it before).
