I *think* someone said yes to this. But you should search the forums.

Memory controller is now on the i7 720QM and the max is 8GB, can verify yourself on intel's website. You can put in more but I doubt it'll be used properly.

let me make it more clear.

Intel assumes only two memory channels will be available in the laptops that are made today (see sager). Lenovo, Asus and others have started adding 4 channels instead of two. Lenovo's and IBM thinkpad's have come with 16GB of RAM and an i7-720QM. It recognizes all 16GB and uses it. I see no reason ASUS would provide a machine with 4 channels of RAM that couldn't utilize all 4 channels. It is unnecessary expense for them to do so. Nor would a reputible reseller like Xotic PC offer 16GB of RAM as an upgrade option without forcing a CPU upgrade if it were not possible.

Thanks for the link but that doesnt say that the g37jh motherboard (mobility HM55) can handle 16gb of ram. Oh well im confuse to be honest... I might try to contact asus support about this.

That would be awesome to add 8 more gb of ram for 280$

im guessing you guys actually use up all 8gb of ram? i never passed 5 and that was doing some pretty heafty video editing... filling 8gb seemed impossible... yet i don't really use ram intensive progams.

That make sense. You think the extra 8gb worth 280$? I like to max out spec :).

Don't mean to wonder off-topic but how much did you spend on your M17x?

I guess it depends. if you have the 280 bucks and the time to take the laptop apart to get to the 4th slot then anything can be worth it long run.

Likely asus will just say it's not supported. Doesn't mean it won't work. Linux isn't supported by asus, either, IIRC.

Why do you need 16GB? Unless you are doing something that needs 16GB, you will get absolutely ZERO improvement by having more ram than you actually use. As it is for most people who are using G73 as a gaming machine have ZERO improvements by having 8GB rather than 4 GB.

Some people have more money than paitence my friend. If he has the money and time to put into getting 16GB in there I see no reason not to, any more than I see a reason to do it.

I can see some specific situations where it woud be nice (running a VM, 3D video rendering and such).

Honestly i dont think i need that much ram but building and upgrading system its a hobby for me, the fact that my system is overkill make me feel good. Im not rich but i do live very well, i dont like trowing money away though. I wonder if i should push this notebook with SSD, i7 940XM and the rams or wait for the next wave of new stuffs (new processors and light peak techs).

Unless you are USING more than 8GB of ram, doesn't matter if having overkill system makes you feel better or not. Its ZERO performance gain. You gain NOTHING except people saying, wow, what a waste of money. Could have spent that on a decent SSD instead.

agreed.. i really doubt your going to use 16GB unless your some hardcore pro... a 940xm if more useful for sure.

YES it can be done! I'm not going to give a bunch of tech reasons why it will other than I went to Fry's, bought 2x4GB corsair ddr-3 opened my g73jh-bst7 put it in and it read it. 12GB total. Read it on windows, Speccy, and HiWINFO32. Dropping in 16GB is a bear, taking out the motherboard is a pretty hefty job on these. HF55 will handle it. The bigger question is will it take 4x8gb???

No, the i7-720/820 is limited to 16GB on the chip's memory controller. Also, Home Premium is limited to 16GB. I don't know if the Extremes can use more RAM, but if it can, you'll also need Pro or Ultimate. (96GB limit)
