What kind of GPU could I put in here? It currently has a 9800M GS. I am looking to upgrade it and possible put some new cooling system in. It has been getting hot lately.

    Thoughts? Ideas? Help!?

    Thank you all :)

Any of the mobile C2D CPUs should work. I upgraded mine to the low power 2.53 and added a Blu-ray drive before giving it to my son. No sure about the GPU. Perhaps the 260m but I have no idea if its compatible with the Bios.

    Cheers,

u can put a 260M but it would roast the G50.. u'd need to do a super heat mod. Its been done before but not worth it IMO.

Any Core 2 Duo mobile will work but no quad cores. You can do the 260m GPU swap but the G50 chassis and cooler is nearly the same for ASUS models that have it stock. Check out the 260 swap thread.
(Short version is to make complete contact with the heatsink and use a modded .inf for drivers)

As for your temps, open it up and clean out the fan. You can do some overclocking as well if you haven't.

A 260m will cause the fan to run at 100% all the time, regardless of temperatures. It'll keep it cooler but may wear it out a little faster perhaps.

I threw in an E8335 ([email protected], replaced a [email protected]) and while it does throw off a bit more heat, after OCing it was like adding a third core to my computer. It's crazy fast, even for single-threaded applications. Makes my GPU heat up more in games that were once CPU-limited. Sleep recovery/photo editing/pdf viewing/flash media/etc etc are all noticeably faster, particularly photo editing. So I say for $150, get a T9600 or better.

Alternatively, you can get an SSD, or if you don't have the money and want the space, the Seagate Momentous XT is a great middleman between HDD and SSD. I'm waiting for a second gen one before I upgrade to that, too.
