I just discovered this last night. Every couple minutes (5 minutes on average, sometimes once every 30 seconds, other times once ever 15 minutes, usually doesn't happen all too frequently though), I hear a really soft popping noise coming from the laptop. It comes from around the area where the enter key is, but that could be way wrong. It is very difficult to explain the noise, it isn't a "click" noise, more of a dull "pop" noise.

When I first heard it last night I kept trying to sniff my nose because I thought I was getting congested in my sinuses. If you're familiar with the "pop" you hear in your nose when your sinuses get congested, its kind of similar to that, but much more quiet. It is concerning to me because I haven't heard this before, and I have had the laptop for a few months.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about? I considering recording a video so you can hear it, but for one, I don't even know if the camera will pick up the noise, and two, its just so unpredictable. I haven't heard it for a while now. I restarted my computer and it still happens. I did dust my computer for the first time in 2-3 weeks yesterday, if that has anything to do with it.

haha I love this I get that pop thing as I have bad sinuses especially when its blocked you push the side of your nose and it pops...

I have no clue about your popping sound though :) could you test with the sound off and see if it still happens, you have a speaker positioned to the right side of the laptop.

Its actually not the audio, I have my speakers muted and the noise still comes out.

EDIT: I caught it on camera, its really tough to make out, but I figured out that it ONLY happens when I am doing something. Not randomly, for example in the video, it did it once without doing anything (just finished doing something), and then to demonstrate I went to control panel, and looked at my programs, which made it do the pop again.

I will have the video uploaded in a few.

Here is a link to a Youtube video of what I am talking about. One of them happens at 5 seconds (can barely hear it), and then one at 14 seconds (the noise in the background is me clicking with my mouse).

I have no idea what it is. Honestly, seems like something that won't be easy to fix lol, but I'm no expert.

That is what I thought may have been it. Because it only does it when I am doing something on the computer (saving a file, loading up my program list, etc). But if I leave it idle, it doesn't seem to do it as often.

Can anyone help? I am just worried in case this is an urgent thing.

I tried to pinpoint the exact source of the noise, and it sounds like it is coming from the upper part of the numpad.

Same here , i also have a G74SX and sometimes , i get a strange noise i can't even tell where it came.

But i can't here such a sound on your video. It's kind of a sound like if you unplug something electric , like a hard drive shuting down or something.

But i'm unable to record it , as it happens something like once - two / day , sometimes i can't even ear it ( headset always on )

Do you have two hard drives in your G74? If then answer is yes, then the second drive is probably set to power down after a time and when you start using it it wakes p and make that distinctive pop noise. It might also be the heads moving making that sound from time to time. All drives click a bit, some more than others.

That sounds like a possibilty, because it does have two hard drives. But the thing is that the other hard drive is not used at all, I have absolutely nothing installed on it yet, so I am not sure what it would be reading from the other drive.

Also, this only began a few days ago. Prior to this, I had the computer for a good few months and I never heard it a single time.

Sounds like your hard drive to me. If you don't have any serious issues then I'd not worry about it.

You could remove the drives and boot from a linux disc or something similar. If you have no popping noise, then you know it is the drive. I wouldn't worry too much about it, some drives are noisier than others. One of the seagate that came with my G73 was quite noisy, my 7K750 clicks once in a while when it wakes up.

I guess the most alarming part to me is that it didn't make this noise up until now, after months of using it for gaming, schoolwork, and internet.
