I think it would be handy to have a program, kinda like Game Booster, but deals with clocks instead. A program that we can use when we aren't gaming, that with one click, send the GPU to a low clock like 300/300 (currently on, 51c idle), and then when you don't want that clock, set it back to default 700/1000. I would think having the card at the lower clock when you don't need the power is beneficial in many ways, in battery life, in the general life of the GPU and fan and components around it. Maybe Asus can make something like this? Dunno, just an idea. I know these machines are built to last with these temps (or at least the temps I get, max 93c), but I want to squeeze as much life out of it as possible.

    gpu clock tool does this...

go to properties on the amd gpu shortcut

after the last ..." -eng=300 -mem=300 save...then just double click that file and BOOM 300/300

    i have 3 shortcuts
    stock
    300/300
    100/200

i just double click whichever one i want

yeah me too, i want my G73 to last a long time. What temps do you idle at stock clocks? when on 300/300 I idle at 54c.

Maybe this'll be adressed in the new vBIOS. All we have to do is wait.

after repaste on stock i idle at average 49-55

    on 300/300 i idle at 45-48
on 100/200 it doesnt go any lower

yah so i made 3 shortcut of amd gpu clock tool
make new shortcut, right click, properties
in the target line i see this
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD GPU Clock Tool\AMDGPUClockTool.exe" -eng=700 -mem=1000

change to whatever you want RENAME THE FILE!!!! so you know

but then you got whatever you need

DONT go from 700/1000 right to 100/200.... you have to make a stop at a moderate clock like 300/300 or something then go low, but you can go low straight to high, i always go low mod high, high mod low

after you double click you will the the screen flicker, that is the RAM changing speeds you can confirm in a regular shortcut of AMD gpu clock tool and see the clock speed change and watch the temperatures

This has already been discussed at length... please at least try to use the search function in the future. And the thread title also tells very little, try to post one that will describe the thread better.

    ^
    GPU Observer for gpu
several available for cpu, like system monitor, or intel core series...
    link

and back on topic, i have this prob that when i underclock, even to 300/300 and then restore to normal clocks, my screen freezes and i think i even got a gsod today(never had one before) then even after reboot with normal clocks the comp keeps freezing..
uninstalling amd gpu clock tool completely followed by reg wipe seems to solve it...

this happened one time before when i tried to underclock to 100/200, that time it happ on the underclock only, uninsatll of amd gpu clock tool fixed it that time too..

its a minor but weird issue,

overclock works fine, runs stable upto 850/1200(havent tried higher)
i use ati powerplay profiles to underclock to 300/[email protected] instead.

Oh gee, I'm sorry mister. I always enjoy you crapping on posts.

    /sarcasm

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...w-underclock-your-ati-5870-automatically.html

That, and the second response to this thread, talk about the same thing. I'm fine with using this method, but I'd rather have a dedicated program (the point of this thread, which is NOT discussed elsewhere, unless my forum-searching skills are sub-par), that perhaps runs in the notification area, where you can click and automatically take care of business. With the current method, it takes quite a while (probably like 5 seconds or more), at least on my machine, and after the screen gets done having a heart attack, the AMD GPU clock tool window opens and closes. Hardly efficient or "cool".

As to the title of the thread, if you don't like it, don't post in it? It seems that a response to this thread was done in a timely manner and was on-subject.

If it'll make you happy, I'll change it to something else.

Just set your clocks in the vbios and make use of powerplay. When i want performance my vbios is set to 705/1100 and i set "high performance" to maximum performance. Then in entertainment my vbios is set to 100/300 and i set it to maximize battery. So when i'm doing general stuff i use "entertainment" and when i play games i set to "high performance" i would think this is exactly what you want. And when i watch video my UDV clocks are set to 200/500 so it will clock up or down on its own. My idel temps are around 44 - 48. I live in a very warm and humid country. If your interested in the vbios i edited, its in my sig. But i have to say not all G73's will be able to take such clocks.

Youre expecting the impossible and people have been asking the very same thing as you and it has been answered just as now - that your choices are either the AMD GPU Clock Tool or the vBios powerplay. And the title could be a bit more precise - like "Need someone to make me new underclocking software". I wouldnt even bother looking in it than so youd be rid of me, but than youd have noone to "crap on" would you? Than youd have to resort to searching for my posts. I make it too easy for you dont i.

I have the same issue. Actually I have two issues and I'm trying to figure out whether they are distinct, related, or the same.

    1) same as you describe: computer freezes when GPU automatically changes frequencies (I can change with AMD GPU tool with no issues)

    2) Freeze with a buzz like an alarm clock. Mostly in games.

The issue you mention is not so minor, because when the screen freezes, (no GSOD) there is nothing else to do than to forcefully shut off. Upon reboot, it freezes again if I touch anything before it has fully loaded stuff (I use a password. what I mean is waiting until there is no disk activity before typing in my password). Afterwards, it will run fine for quite some time.

This problem was driving me nuts, but over this weekend and reading your post I am more confident about my diagnosis:

"something" happens when powerplay or other software changes the clocks of the GPU. If I play on "high performace" which has powerplay settings of leaving the clocks at 700/1000, I run for hours without trouble (except sound..different issue). If I play in a setting which lets the clocks fluctuate I get a screen freeze at some point. I certainly feels like its when the GPU changes frequencies that it happens.

I have played GTAIV for hours. Batman AA, The Guild II, Mass Effect 2... no issues whatsoever in High performance. I ran furmark for "a while" (forgot it running and came back a few hours later panicking... but temps were still 87C)

    I have an A1, came with BIOS 206, I updated to 209.
    Everything stock.
Removed Creative (driversweeper) and reinstalled Realtek.
    Original vBios
Original win7 x64 install with some bloatware removed.
    No repasting, no extra cooling.

Two changes that brought great benefits:
    - Removed Creative and that immediately brought a greater stability:
far fewer lock ups during non-gaming usage)
    - Installed latest version of power4gear (1.00.37 but some people speak of 1.0.0.38 which I didn't find)
GPU idling temps went from 85C to 57C... I couldn't believe it. I checked and rechecked, but now it's always that, even in "high performance" mode.

I will disable any automatic change of frequency for a while. I'll use the trick of putting shortcuts to AMD GPU tool to change from 700/1000 to 150/300.

I'll report what I get. Honestly, if that fixes it, I would be able to say that my G73 is perfectly stable.

On the second problem (the sound)
I first simply disabled the loading of the creative software, but didn't uninstall. That brought what seemed great stability for a few days, but when I played a music CD and left it playing while (not working at all on the computer) it locked up after about 15 minutes.
I then removed Creative completely using driversweeper and the same CD played a couple of times without freezing.

As I said, I can't yet figure out if this is a sound problem of if it is when sound and GPU-auto-frenquencies-change happen at the same time.

To complete the picture: I've only had two BSOD (standard MS Blue with white text giving some reason): one when I updated Vuze and one when I first started using virtualbox (but I think Comodo firewall interfered in both cases). Now that Comodo is trained I can run both apps without issues. I have run Mandriva 2010.1 as a virtual machine including the beta 3D hardware acceleration without any issues.

I've never had a xSOD while gaming.
