Im debating whether or not to slightly OC my GPU. I know how to do it so im not asking how to...I just want to know how many of you here actually have stable GPU OC settings and what they are if you dont mind sharing that info. Also, Is it necessary to OC the CPU as well with an OCed GPU or can I leave the CPU as it is?

I dont usualy overclock, but read this post:

    GPU Overclock:
You will need AMD GPU Clock Tool for HD5870 (found here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-GPU-Clock-Tool-v0.9.26.0-For-HD-5870-download-2383.html).

After researching clock speeds, i found that just bumping both the core clock and the memory 100mhz each gave a good performance increase.

Here is a side by side picture of the overclock vs the stock, where you can see the difference in fill rates and bandwidth:

    http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/Tweak17emon/gpuocsidebyside.jpg

    Conclusion:
Running both the overclocks listed here, i have seen a 4-9% increase in gaming preformance in current gen games (including DX11) such as Starcraft2 Beta, Dirt2, Team Fortress 2, Crysis, and Far-Cry 2. I Will update this post in the comment section with numbers of stock vs overclock in benchmarking applications.

    So try running at 800/1100

    hmmm..4%? nah...9%? Hell yeah!

I know everyone's lappy reacts differently to OCing gpu on our g73s. I was told do gradually increase instead of jumping straight to 800/1100. They said go for 10-15 increments until you can get to 800/100 then stay there.

I know this will increase my temps but (optimistically), if I can get a 9% performance increase on the best gfx options then it would be worth the increase in temps...luckily my stock paste has been great. Idle; 50-55c gaming: 70-80c over 3 hrs of play (fluctuates..monitored via GPU-Z)

How long have you had the machine?

My temps used to be around 55 idle and 70-80 gaming, (for the first month),
now they are at (65 idle and 85-95 gaming).. even started getting gsod's... (this is 2 months after purchase).

still running on stock paste though

ive only had it for about a month. Ive been playing at least 6-7hrs on it per day (thanks backlog of games..), and according to GPU-Z, the max temps ive ever reached was 82C and that was just a 5-10sec spike. On average its probably about 72-74c.

I know that gaming this much, im eventually gonna have to repaste but i have zero issues with that. What scares me is what you mentioned about getting GSOD. Upon receiving my g73, i immediately updated to bios 209 and vbios 211 and ive never had any major issues on anything. What are your bios/vbios?

i've tried playing Need For Speed Hot pursuit with 840/1100
but after few minutes it frooze the machine
so i went a little down with the memory clock 840/1080 and i was playing the game for hours without freezing Gsod etc...
try your own clocks ...start with 800/1100
    hope this helps

thanks for sharing your setting mite_jan. I was wondering though, if OC setting vary by game? Like you said 840/1080 worked for you for NFS:HP but will those same settings work for any/every other game?

on a side note, i know people will say "OCing GPU is a bad idea...blah...shorter lifespan..blah' is there any truth to this? or is hardware so good now that OC's dont generally affect hardware lifespan to a noticeable degree.

well the best way to find out is to test :)
i don't have other games installed so i can't participate
but yeah probably every game will be playable at those clocks but maybe :)
your clocks will be different so test...
you don't need to overclock either... if you find some game lags you just lower the resolution :p
or if you want everything maxed out then overlock but only if you need :)
