It was supposed to be shown off around CES. 15" ultra slim form factor equipped with a 1080.

So... Thinner than a Razer Blade, in a 15" chassis with a GTX 1080?
They probably tried to turn it on...praetorianx likes this. -
excellent point. Well not so much ultra slim, but it was posed to be 16.6mm thick.

Nah man, that's thinner than a Razer Blade... Which can't even cool a 1060. A 1080 is like double the tdp, that's completely nuts.
It would need like liquid ultra stock, a vapor chamber, and like 3 fans.
I'd be stunned if Asus pulled off something that insane. -
Q3 2017 according to a UK ASUS ROG rep.

My bet is they'll go the same route as acer is with the triton 700 and use a Max Q version. That would make it remotely possible, but they'd still need some impressive cooling.
-
Are there any Max Q edition notebooks in the wild yet? Has anyone seen bench comparisons with the standard gpu's in thin notebooks?
-
Not yet, from what I understand they're due later this year. If the benchmarks Acer posted for their triton are to be believed, you're looking at around 15% less performance overall. Nothing for sure until people get review models and early adopters start getting them to test them out.MiSJAH likes this.

Ok.
I'm intrigued though. My AORUS with 1070 out performs the razerblade pro with 1080.
If the GX501 outperforms my AORUS I'd be tempted. -
Well the pro is heavily throttled down, so I wouldn't be surprised if my GL502VS beats it too. Razer probably should have waited until Max-Q came out to do this, and use a 1070 in the meantime. They make some interesting stuff, but their execution is just a little lacking for my taste. That and their quality control on the blades is not too great (at least for their early release models).MiSJAH likes this.
What happened to the GX501?
