and making it your primary drive [c:drive]? Are the drives hard to get too? Is this something that can be done by someone that’s not a technician can do?
    Thanks for the help

... open up the laptop, remove a hard drive, put the SSD in, use the bios to make sure it's primary, and install windows.

    Maximum, like ... 6 screws.

    Also Set bios to AHCI

there are excellent threads in this forum that explain the benefits and method to doing a clean OS install.
Depending on which G73 machine you buy it will have space for 2 hard drives, but some models (Best Buy comes to mind) will need a second bracket

Out of curiosity, are there any benefits to a fresh install other than sector alignment? What if I were to install an existing Windows installation from a system image backup (.vhd)? Is alignment information carried over?

IIRC, using a .vhd to install is about the same process as mirroring/backing up ... so I don't think so :(

    Could be wrong.

Aww... thanks for the reply DCx.

The only reason why I would doubt it is because it's capacity-independent, ie: I can install the image to a smaller drive if I chose to (as long as it fits)...

I'm just running off memory, but using the image is a great way to deploy over a large network, but again ... IIRC, it's the same as imaging and restoring. So unless you did an image of the install on an SSD, then it'll fail. And even if it is, I'm not 100% it'd work properly, either
