Searched around, but the word "laptop" and "cooler" is used a tad too many times and in other senses of the word so I gave up on reading through all the posts. So how about it folks ? what are you people using to keep this beauty calm ?

I was thinking about the Cooler Master NotePal U2 since it has 2 fans which can be moved about I think it's a good solution... but does it fit or is the g73 too big to be properly placed on this

I have a cooler master at home, not sure which model but i feel it was a waste of my $55sgd... My temperatures were more or less the same. At the very most, my hdd area was cooler but thats about it.

A cooling pad that has been recommended by a few reputable folks around here is the Thermaltake Massive23. I recently ordered it myself and am waiting for it to arrive. It's designed for 17 inchers so it fits the G73 quite well. It has a big (as the name suggests) 23cm fan that's pretty much silent, and runs off USB power. I'm expecting some pretty notable temp drops when I get it. Someone around here posted some pics of how it looks under the G73; if you do some searching you might be able to find them.

ah ok,the one I mentioned will cost be about 40 USD...although... I am curious if it can be wrapped around the laptop as this bloke is demonstrating
YouTube - Cooler Master NotePal U2
lol one of the reviewers left a comment saying that it poorly lowers the temp by a measly 15c....uhm from what I know....15 is enough to be impressed no ?

Although it is a bit undersized for the laptop, it still works out just fine for me: Zalman NC1000.

With the removable fans on that one I'd be too worried about something breaking...it might do a fine job cooling the G73 but it's a bit too risky for me.

And lowering temps by 15C is pretty darn good - people were proud to announce those kinds of temp drops after repasting! So I doubt the cooler really does that good of a job, and I'm almost certain it won't get anywhere near that with a G73. But, your choice. What are your idle/max temps?

Edit: I didn't realize your post after mine was referring to smile_gerard, not me :p

I had one a year ago and it didn't do much. It seems 5v is just not enough power efficiently run a fan. I just prop up my laptop with wood under the front to feet or they make things like this. I was actually thinking about maybe making one out of wood/fiberglass and sticking a few fans from my work on it. The fans I would choose will be 110v or 24v using an AC adapter being at least 80mm with 50+ cfm.

Yes they do. Watch those commercial for barkoff and whatever other stupid things they make now. People buy anything, especially if they say "call now and we will throw in a second one for free". I was merely stating that one could make something similar like I just took a 2x4, chopped it, and put it under my laptop feet. Not pretty but it works.

Edit: My temp drop after doing so was about 2C-4C.

I'm surprised anyone needs to add cooling to this laptop, mine is comfortable on my lap while gaming. The airflow design also seems like one that would not benefit much from fans blowing against the bottom.

Since i have experianced heat problems with my Asus G73 but not ready to RMA it just yet i got the Targus Chill Hub XC (includes a usb hub on the unit). I got down from 67 idle to 58-62. I am pleased with how it performes.

I am using CoolerMaster U2. It supports 17" like our G73 and it's effective! My former idle temp was 66+ now its on 54-58. But after playing instead of 70-72 now it's 68. When playing the former temp was 88 but now it is lower than 84. I'm well satisfied with U2. I hope, U2 will help you too.

I'm running the same as above, the Cooler Master Ergo Stand. It helps with temperatures where I am. The weather here is hot and humid 365 days a year. Temp drops around ~10c to 15c depending on the setup and conditions. I love the fact the laptop is elevated and there is ventilation at the bottom :)

I think a laptop cooler is useless. The laptop should be built to handle the heat in a good way. The design of this laptop can do that but the only problem to that is they borked the thermal paste application.

It's also one more thing to lug around.

I repasted my GPU and am very happy with it.

I would agree, repasting produces better, more effective results. But some of us do not want to risk opening up the laptop for fear of breaking something, so a cooler offers a safer, less risky solution.
And you don't have to necessarily lug it around. I do all my gaming (and therefore the only time I would really need a cooler) in one place. If I move my G73 somewhere else, I will not be gaming, and therefore I do not need to take the cooler with me.
But to each his own. I know repasting usually works great (if you do it right and don't mess anything else up in the process) but the cooler solution just makes more sense to some people.

Anybody know of a cooler that would work while sitting on a bed? Like something that raises the whole laptop up?

    Thanks

I just ordered the Zalman NC2000. I will also be re-pasting this weekend with IC Diamond 7.

    DAO - 88C
    SC2 - 94C
    Furmark - 96C

    Mem I/O - Idle 66C 700/1000 and 45C at 100/200 clocks.
    Ambient - 22C.

Hoping to drop them temps more with the cooler and re-paste. Will post temps in the re-paste thread when I'm done.

I take off the under surface panel(2 screws), place my $10 Smith USB fan under this area to flow straight onto the GPU heatsink and the memory board and combined (panel off+usb fan ) get about 10C posible slightly more off. Certainly enough to tun Furmark at 705/1100 (runs to just under 100c .

With just the panel off and back of laptop raised to promote flow (any old book will do) I get about 5C

I repasted with Arctic silver (who knows if I did a good job on this) but certainly that also gave me about 10C

Before I couldn't run stock 700/1000 with games without crash(turn off) due to heating.

Just got my Massive23 today. -5C while idling, 5-10C cooler when gaming. Now I max out (TSS1) at 88-90C while playing CoD, gonna see how much cooler I am when playing GTA.

I would say so, I would definitely be happy with around 60C idle. Chastity after repasting got into the 50s, but that was, well, after repasting :p So I would say 60C is a pretty good stock idle temp.

No cooler and flat on my table I idle around 55C (about 23C ambient) with temps around 82C in SC2. FurMark still gets me up to 88C after 30 min, but it's a ton better the 100C+ (105C without elevating the rear) temps I would get prior to repasting.

Did a 2hr Furmark today, with 10.7a, Powerplay disabled, Overdrive disabled, stock 700/1000 1.15v, bios 211, no extra cooling: 76-77C max temps

    even I went "damn!"

your g73's fans do a decent job as it is.

what really turns me away from using a cooling pad on the g73 is the elevated keyboard. Most cooling pads are slightly elevated, which makes a really steep hill for typing.
