You could just use the Realtek drivers, and use the EQ to boost bass. I use ALchemy for some of my games, so I prefer having Creative installed. The X-Fi 1.1 is just updated software compared to the old Audigy version we got licensed for. If you do a little digging, you can find a patcher for it.

I just added ALTERNATIVES so that new users can find out stuff a little faster.
Also added Chastity's Driver reference page.
If you see anything that should be changed please PM me. I added brief descriptions of the different vBIOS, if you can think of a more brief more concise description of the vBIOS please PM me. -

Great thread.
Just got home with a new G73 from Best Buy and this forum was the first place I checked for info on what to do with it to get rid of the bloatware. -
For others with a Best Buy version of the G73JH, you can get a hard drive caddy for the empty drive bay from HERE. Take note that they don't include the screws needed to attach the caddy to the chassis or to hold the drive in the caddy. You can get those screws at most any computer/laptop repair shop. The two that hold the caddy to the chassis are the same as those for the bottom access panel. And many new laptop hard drives come with mounting screws.
The brackets/caddies/cages (whatever you want to call them) are often out of stock. Just click the link on the page to be notified by email when they get more in. I got one about a month ago. Having two internal drive bays is one of the (many) advantages of the G73 series.
Also, if you need a laptop backpack to carry it around, I highly recommend the Targus XL. The G73 will not fit into the laptop pouch of most so-called 17" laptop backpacks... but it fits perfectly into the protective pouch of the Targus. I got mine from one of the online retailers (Amazon or Newegg, can't recall). It was about $60 at the time. I haven't seen this bag in any stores. You'd think BB would stock them but they don't, at least they didn't when I got my G73. -

I just updated my vid drivers to the latest version and tried running 3dmark06. The 2nd test with the little fireflies gave me my first GSOD and I was not a real happy camper. I followed the guide here for what to do when you first get a G73jh and updated my vbios. Not only did it fix my GSOD but the darn thing downclocks lower in idle state and knocked a few degrees off. I don't know what I would do w/o this forum. I don't think I would be as happy with my purchase as I am. Thants for sure. Thanks again to all!

I have a little different story. Hope you won't mind. I'll try to be brief.
Wanted a G73JH from the moment I read about them. Release date came and went, and there were NONE available despite pre-ordering through work a couple of months in advance. Nearly 3 months later, still no luck, so I cancelled my pre-order to wait for the next best thing. But there was no better bargin, with Dell XPS and other "gaming systems" costing $1000 more for lesser hardware.
Well, when Amazon got the ROG version with the new hard drives (SATA with Flash Buffer), and I heard about it... I'd missed the first order by a day or two tops. But I kept my eyes open and by the following Friday (maybe 3 days after that), they were in-stock! I paid for overnight shipping, and got my laptop by noon on Saturday!!!
After reading about the bloatware, I decided to create my backup discs, format the thing, and install 64-bit unlimited from scratch. Then I upgraded the BIOS, installed the latest ATI driver, and it was running pretty great. I've had some occasional issues installing games using the built-in Blu-Ray drive, but I have an external burner and it works GREAT. My system is setup with an Ergotron Laptop stand so I can angle the system however I want, a Logitech G19 gaming keyboard I got on-sale from Logitech direct for 50% off, I use the ASUS/Razer gaming mouse that came with it, and overall it's AWESOME.
HOWEVER... after about 6 months of use, I installed MLB 2K10 about a month ago, and then updated the roster file using an online update from a web site. Not official, it gave me the latest players and seemed fine. About a week later, after having simmed a season I went to do off-season moves, and the computer crashed. Not sure what it was I updated the video driver. Crashed faster! As I started to get nervous I rolled back the video driver, tried different apps, including 3DMark11 (which crashed almost immediately), etc. I thought my system was overheating, but didn't know why, and was seriously scared I'd need to RMA.
However, rather than do anything stupid, I turned the system off last night, read before bed, and when I got home from work (12 hour day today), came here and started reading. Thanks to ValkerieFire, I found that you could update the Video Card firmware or BIOS, besides the motherboard BIOS, and as BOTH were out of date I ran those upgrades. I also updated to the VERY newest video driver... 11.12 is it?
Well, after creating the USB stick for the Video Card BIOS update, then doing the latest system update .09, figuring I'd go to .11 and increase the noise if it seemed necessary. Lo and behold, after those two updates, my system has been TOTALLY stable again!!! No RMA, no repair bill, nothing! Gonna run 3DMark11 again and make sure that's running fine, but it REALLY looks like you guys helped me fix my system. Thank god for you!!!
Sincerely,
One amazingly happy computer tech, who didn't have to spend DAYS fixing his own system! -
I am glad this tutorial helped you.
Today I added 11.2 since it seems to be working well (I just installed it).
I also added Chastity's driver page as an alternative to burning an Asus Driver Disk however I recommended this only for advanced users. -
Added 11.3 & 11.4. Also changed the Asus driver disk link to another I found, hopefully it stays up. I tested it and it works fine.

I am folowing your awesome guide, but I'm getting stuck at a very early stage:
When trying to install windows 7 64 from the downloaded ISO (version unlock, burn with IMGburn at 1x, verified, run installation from DVD boot menu) I get an infamous "No Optical driver found..." after clicking the install button.
Anybody had this? I have a G73 JH A2 (no blu ray, just DVD)
Thanks in advance! -
+rep for you man.
I wish I would have read this thread a year ago when I bought my g73jh. I've done everything on this list except I have drivers on a external and I installed a clean/legit copy of windows 7 pro instead of the win7 that comes with the machine.
Still have'nt finished loading all the drivers and installing BF3 to see how it runs now, but I'm looking forward to putting your work to the test -
Thank you very much for the guide! Is this what I should do with my new g53sx if I'm going to install an SSD and move the hdd?
-
can someone post the vbios files ?
also thanks for all the great info
-
Thanks to Tijo !! -
You'll need to grab ATIFlash form post #1 though or directly form a site like techpowerup though.

Hello, can anyone please reupload the driver disk image? This link isn't working and I can't find another one...

Asus have re-organised their site but if you follow the download links at asus.com and put in your model then you should be able to grab them.

I already tried it several times unfortunatly my CPU is presenting problems as in I can't get more than 9 FPS in CS:GO and still haven't figured out exactly why...
I mainly wanted the Intel TurboBoost Driverfrom the Driver Disc since after trying the Web download versions it gives out errors. but thx anyway for the help -
That should work fine without a special driver, as it's managed by the CPU itself. Check with hwinfo64 if your CPU gets hotter than 95°C, or your GPU. This sound a bit like throttling going on. You could also use MSI Afterburner to monitor GPU and CPU heat/clock while gaming.

That or you are in power saving mode and the CPU is not clocking up at all, check the temperatures too though, when did you last clean the heatsinks?
