Hey all,
I'm interested in buying a new laptop mostly so I can play games like SWTOR, SC2, Diablo 3, etc. I have been doing a lot of research on the Asus G74SX series, but I'm just not sure which model I should go with. And apparently some models have been discontinued so I just dont know what is what. I know some come with blu-ray and 3D additions, but I'm not really interested in those options. I'd like to spend under $1,500 if possible. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm not too familiar with computer lingo or anything just so you all know.
I was leaning towards this one at the moment:
Newegg.com - ASUS G74SX-NH71 Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 17.3" 12GB Memory DDR3 500GB HDD 7200rpm DL DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

I just bought that same exact model thru Amazon. I paid just under $1700 for it, and it included a wired (pretty useless) mouse and a backpack.
But the machine itself? I love it!
My main deal is FSX, and it is very demanding on computers, the G74 handles it very well. Just a couple of options turned down, and it works beautifully.
I updated the drivers and downloaded the latest example of Inspector, and am still tweaking FSX, but I am very happy with this laptop (and $1700 is a big chunk of change for me but I am glad I spent the money).
Sorry, I am not very technical, either, but that model you referenced is a BEAST! In a very good way. -
GenTech PC - Sager NP9170 (Clevo P170EM) w/nVidia GTX670M/675M I would look into this new Sager, early reviews in the Sager forum seem very positive

Josea is right by taking a look at other models in that price range. Doesn't hurt.
Sager has just released new updated components, and ASUS is awaiting the release of the possible G75 series soon as well. But no hard date of release has been announced.
But, with that said, the G74 is an incredibly powerful and sleek model with tons of capability.
The Sager model he mentioned, also is 'User Upgradeable'. Meaning the user can upgrade the components such as the video card and processor as well. The ASUS models cannot do this as generally they are soldered onto the motherboard itself. -
Generally with Asus the CPU should be upgradeable, but very difficult to get to unless the laptop is disassembled completely.
The GPU isn't soldered in on the G74, but it has an Asus only (as far as I know) unique PCB design that differs from other designs. Again, to access this component would also require a total teardown of the laptop (or near total) to access the GPU.
Aside from that, the drives, RAM, and Wifi adapter are easy to access on the G74 models.
Which Asus G74SX model should I choose?
