Which online retailer to buy Asus G73 from if u need to get to UK? I've asked gentechpc.com and xoticpc.com and they're saying it will take 2-4 weeks... u can't wait that long... is there any reliable online retailer which has stock so it can deliver in a week or a few days?

I contacted Gentech on the issue,

I read that all the approved resellers of Asus can deliver to UK, just that delivery is gonna be costly. The power adapter has a multimode, and if the unit fails it can be sent to the UK center for repair which has pretty much sold it for me.

As a veteran seller on ebay, I can confidently say that USPS has the cheapest shipping rates mailing packages overseas from the US. I think $150 USD is still a very fair price given the lack of availability in the the UK/Ireland and even if they are available, the MSRP will surely exceed the price purchased from the US with shipping included.

I don't mind paying that extra when you consider the specs of the G73JH in the first place, it does annoy me how the UK seems to get shafted in the sense of availability and pricing.

The shipping price and general cost is around the same on ebay.co.uk for USA sellers of the G73JH, but It would be wiser to buy from a company especially so long distance right?

Absolutely; if there was a local company that sold the G73, that would be my first choice too. Even if the local company charges a little more, I think it would still be worth it. However, this isn't the case, since the MSRP for Asus laptops are close to double the price compared to the US (this goes for almost every electronic product in the UK). Getting the G73 from a reputable reseller in the US such as gentech is your next best option.

On a similar note, this is also similar for Taiwan as well. Seeing that All of Asus's laptops are made in Taiwan, you would assume it is cheapest to purchase one there. It is actually cheaper to purchase it from the US and have it shipped than to simply purchase one in Taiwan. Odd, eh?

Plain and simple, the economy doesn't make sense and must be complicated to work! :p

I think I'll go local then, just seeing which reseller does 3 years warranty global the cheapest! :) There is no chance of Import tax being added with USPS then? That's still a concern, and I don't fully understand it/had no experience whatsoever so I don't want to risk being out of more money than I would have originally thought!

Mate, most likely you will pay duty tax when it comes into the UK. If I remember right is about 10% of the total value.

But the biggest thing I would advise you to consider having bought an Asus laptop in the past from the USA is if something goes wrong.

Yes Asus has global warranty so your more or less covered providing Asus warranty decides to cover it. But lets say for some reason or another you end up in a dispute with Asus then your much better off with the protection that the sales of goods act gives you if you've bought in the UK.

The tax will be charged by delivery services (USPS), not a company like Gentech correct?

I need to look into this more before I do anything, importing is a real F!

The tax will be charged by the local custom's office.
When the package arrives in UK, the USPS will hand it over to the customs office and then they will decide if you will be charged or not.
Most probably you will have to pay import duty.

I don't know about UK but in Germany the package first goes to central customs office at the airport and after that they send it to local customs branch in the city where I live.
The local customs office sends out a postcard when they have the package and then I have to go there and pick it up and also pay the VAT which in Germany is 19% of the total value.

I ordered my N71JQ-A1 from Gentech PC. It was sent by USPS. When it arrived in Germany it was handed over to customs office and I had to clear it from there.

usps is the worst by a leading mile. They are the cheapest but not always. We offer 99$ dollars for UPS expedited. This beats USPS rates. this also gets it to UK and clears customs in 3 business days flat vs. weeks with usps. Avoid USPS at all costs. It is worth to pay double for a service like UPS. If you ever encounter a problem with usps they will take 6 months to pay international claims. I have experienced a half dozen times where they loose all tracking info (after it is delivered). They suck! worst company in the world which is why they can not turn a profit like UPS or fedex

I just had a look at the G73 on your website, I'd start to panic if something took weeks to deliver from the US, especially if it's really expensive. It's good to know if a delivery method is solid or not. Thanks!

Biotech would still have import tax but it would clear customs much quicker? sounds good to me. Damn why does these things have to be over complicated for a soon to be university student! :p

the difference between usps and ups is that ups does not charge a brokerage fee while usps. that saves you around 30$ or so from what i hear. UPS clears customs the day before it hits customs for sellers that are proactive. that does not apply to all UPS shipments. They are complicated in this forum, Talk to your vendor for good advice and accurate measure of broad experience.
