is a 4.0 (W/m.K) better then a 2.0 (W/m.K)? So is bigger better?

Come again? Both thermal pads and thermal paste do the same thing, they transfer heat from the GPU or CPU die to the heat sink. I'm really not sure what you mean by the "memory on the board." The heat sink only makes contact with the die which a drop of thermal paste is good for that.

no on the laptop heatsink makes contact with the memory on the gpu. So i want to replace the thermal pads and i want to know which ones i want. is the 4.0 (W/m.K) better? I would assume so since its more expensive that it is the higher quality one. See my link to cooling mod for a picture of my heatsink

My guess is that higher numbers mean better heat transfer rate though i just used one from ebay on my gtx260m with a rating of 3.2w/m-K. I used a 1mm thickness pad. The pads are kind of color coded, the one i used is a light blue color kind of close to the thermal pads you find in hp dv series laptops. I would guess these will work fine as a replacement.

this is the best you can get on the market, I bought it for my Asus G73Jh and my HD 6990 , this is a perfect choice. this has the highest thermal transfer rate.
(don't use IC Diamond , it may damage your GPU die which causes lines on screen and many side effects) -

EDIT: bookmarked yours but i am not worried i am sure the 4W is better then stock asus. I'll use that on my next laptop but for this one the cheaper ones will work fine. BTW Nice find. -

when the heat transfer rate increases , the temps go down. -

i will only have this for a year or two longer so i am not worried at this point. If it was a couple years ago i would have used the better ones but at this point not worth it.

Guys do not forget that the thermal pads only transfer heat from the Memory modules and not the die itself so it will make no difference at all to the temperatures you see on your monitoring software. The diode, controllers and shaders are all located on the Die. The 6970/90M requires a variety of different sections of the card to be covered and transfer heat away so that is when you might want to make sure you have better conductivity but again I am using stock pads and have no problems at all and with a card like the 5870M there is little need upgrade them.
Any thermal pad is fine to use as the Vram does not get anywhere near as hot as the Die and spending out lots of money on better thermal conductivity for a mobile card's Vram is a waste of time. It will also not make any difference to your overclocking ability. The one difference that was found with user thinner pads on the 5870M was the poor construction of the heatsink meant that it sat flusher over the Die providing better conductivity and lowering the temps.
ICD is fine and in my opinion the best you can use it is only the diamond content that stains your copper I have used it for the last 5 years and after numerous applications on a variety of GPU and CPU it has never caused damage. Poor application and the resulting heat is what damages a Die. -

yea i am not concerned about ICD and i know about the temp. Reason why I am getting new pads is because it appears the current pads dont make very good contact so i figured i would re palce them for 5 bucks....well i'll only use like 1-2 dollars work of those thermal pads and save the rest for another day. If i ever get a enw laptop with a highend gpu i'll use the best ones out of paranoia and wanted good life out of it.

Are you using the G73JH? If so then yes consider trying different thickness instead of better conductivity the 1mm pads they use where fine for one side of the heatsink on mine but raised it on the other side meaning that where the memory controllers were located on the Die I would always see 90-100oC and couldn't work out why. I ended up using 1mm on one side of the Vram and .5 on the other and this dropped my temps across to the board to 70oC Max when on a Furmark test but using ICD as that was the best of the best.

got two .5 and quished one of them and applied them both. Good times!
ICD blob in a line across the Die for me. Blob works just as well I just find the line worked well for me. Same with my 6990M which has a bigger Die the line of ICD works best. -
Those are quite high for idle but it depends where you live and your climate if you are around 20-25oC then that is pretty much normal.
Otherwise you could try the thinner pads but Mx4 should be good enough it is just the thickness of ICD that wins on the JH because it fills the entire gap the poor heatsink produces. -
My ambient temp: 27oC .
and the thermal paste im using is Arctic Silver 5.
Im waiting till my MX-4 and phobya 7W/mk arrives, so il be posting the temp difference between them,
and the current thermal pad is the stock and also it was out of my g73 for a month , and there is much dust over it, but it still transfers lol. -
27oC is hot I would expect you to be seeing low to mid 60s to be honest.
Arctic Silver 5 was great back in the day and works well on Desktop cards but for mobile cards you cannot beat a good TIM you should see better results with MX4. -

if your pads are thick and your temp high thinner pads may help to get the heatsink closer to the Die you just must make sure that it does not touch it, the last thing you wanna do is screw the heatsink on and it crack the Die.

yea....the ones i got feel like a sheet of lead lol they are super heavy...also really thick....too thick i think. They also came dirty so would need cleaning before use. I'll save them for later but I need to buy a different one which hopefully is thinner
