Is your G73 noisy? I am just using the it for surfing the net (not doing anything intensive) but I can hear the fan noise about 1.5 feet in front of the screen.

Can you hear the fan noise on your G73 ? Is there anyway to turn down the fan speed?

Does it go at a high rpm as soon as you turn it on and never slow down?

It could be you're running a lot of programs in the background and/or you're surfing websites that utilizes flash. This can increase CPU usage and ultimately make the fan spin faster to reduce heat from the CPU.

Some how the vent on the right side is blowing air out stronger than the left side. When I touch the left vent in the back, it is really cool. The vent on the right is much hotter. It seems that the noise come mainly from the vent on the right.

What is wrong? Anyone has the same problem?

I am just surfing the internet without doing anything in the back ground. The site that I am at is just this forum.

Not only that, my main drive is the OCZ Vetex SSD 120 GB drive so it should even be quieter than other people's A1 laptop with 2 regular hard drives. My other drive is the 500 GB factory drive.

Is there a program that would tell me how fast the fan speed is running? I want to post the fan speed for you guys to see.

Even testing with furmark, maxxing the temps out on the GPU, I could barely hear the fans running. I'm actually very impressed with how quiet and cool this thing is (A2)

I guess I have the same problem if you wanna call it that... My fan on the right side ( the GPU ) is always running and revs up pretty quickly while gaming. On the bright side my GPU core has never gotten close to 80 degrees even during some hardcore gaming sessions. So Im not too concerned with it.

Seeing that the right vent is for the GPU (left for CPU), I would check your GPU temps and see if they are abnormally high.

Speedfan is a program that enables you to see your fan's RPM, but it's used mainly for desktop PC. You could give that a try first.

Mine does this as well, but it falls into normal functioning in my opinion... Doing anything CPU intensive (no GPU), and you'll get the opposite effect.

I think that is within normal...

I can hear the right side of the fan spinning or noise if you called it that way.... if i am in a quiet area... even though I am just browsing around...

The noise however is not as high as my notebook cooler though..

While I wouldn’t call it silent, for a 17” enthusiast notebook it is very quiet. The last 17” I had was a Dell 1730 with SLI and an overclocked extreme CPU, now that thing was LOUD. I had a couple other 17’s that were also louder as well (Dell 1710 and a Clevo-ish one can’t remember the name). I think half of it is what you are used to or were expecting. If you came from a silent SSD fanless ultraportable then this thing would be loud by comparison.

    Hi All,
I have G73 also, but with i5 and 4GB RAM and have the same problem. The laptop is not so silent as should be. In Idle I have 61 C ( In my opinion it is to high) and I constantly hear noise of GPU fan.
How is it possible that one model does not produce noise and second does????

You guys all have the catalyst drivers installed so the ATI gpu can clock down when idle, right?

Edit: How can you check the actual clocks of the card (I have 10.3 and want to see what it's doing)

I have installed ATI drivers provided by Asus on CD. Previously, I had Acer6935G with GF9600M GT and downclocking worked OK, here I cannot check it as GPU-Z does not show anything. What I know that PowerPlay is turned on.
If I compere Asus and Acer noise in idle, for me it sounds the same.
GPU temp in Idle is 60-62C - balanced scheme.
GPU temp in idle is 55-56C - Saving power scheme
In both cases, noise is the same.

I used both of those, and as it turned out they were indeed giving me the correct clock. The 5870 isn't clocking down.

I just manually clocked down the 5870 to 100/200 from 800/1100. At 60% brightness and 10% down the remaining indicator is showing 3 hours. I'm tempted to run it all they way down to see what it's really capable of. (KB backlight on at 1/3 too)

    (I'm just web browsing)

There's just a waft of warm air coming out of the right exhaust, I can just barely feel it.

    Edit:40mins and down to 75% battery 0_0

Why is not the GPU clocking down?
Is it software or hardware issue?

I think for many the G73 is the first high powered laptop they can afford and have.

For many of us we know what to expect for fan noise so when we hear the G73, it's pretty much silent.

For those that haven't had a laptop that produced so much heat or expecting silent to be silent.

IT'S MARKETING. It's not completely silent, if you hear air move, what do you want? Asus to tell air to stop making noise?

    75% at 40mins
    61% at 60mins

    so about 40% per hour

this is about 2:30 which is a far cry from the 1:40-1:50 I normally get.
I'll write up instructions when I get back to my room.

Pretty quiet to me. If I DIDN'T hear some fan I would be worried my cpu would fry. If you want quiet get an integrated video card. There's always a down side to high performance.

Sorry, I'm just on autopilot with that question :D AMD Clock Tool isn't a clock monitor imo, more a temp monitor and clock setter. You'll have to keep clicking the "Get clocks" button.

    PowerPlay does work on G73.

Get MSI Afterburner and install, it is a clock & temp monitor and clock setter. No fan speed monitor for the 5870m it seems :(
Open up CCC and click on PowerPlay.
    Enable it if it isn't.
You have some simple choices for Plugged In and Battery.

On Battery: "Maximize Battery Life" you'll see the clocks go to 300/1000. On "Maximize Performance", you'll see them go back to 700/1000

On Plugged In: "Maximize Performance" = 700/1000 and "Maximize Battery Life" = 300/1000

I'm looking at the Profiles.xml in user/AppData/Local/ATI/ACE and it's a little different than I'm used to as I see clocks. In this profile you'll see lines like:

    (Feature name="Plugged In"}
    (Property name="PluggedIn Supported" value="False" /)
    etc......

The 300, 700 or 1000 clocks are not in the profile, so I'm betting they are possibly in the VGA BIOS, but GPUz 4.2 does not support reading this BIOS and I only started this venture 10 minutes ago.

I'll look into a little more, but for now PowerPlay does work and you can choose whether your Plugged In or Battery gets the 300/1000 or 700/1000 clocks in the CCC.

One can probably use MSI Afterburner for some profile setups. Again, just started with this.

    Q

EDIT: I just watched the GPU core drop 5C on 300/1000 while typing this. We are far from app automatic here, we only have whether it's plugged in or on battery to have an auto decision between 300 or 700 core, but small steps, small steps :)

Whenever I turn on my G73, the right side fan is always so loud and never stops. Gaming or surfing the web.

The fan on the right side being audible and always on is normal behaviour. What you have here is a classic case of some people not hearing as much as other people. The fan is on for every G73JH delivered from the factory.

Asus can easily do something about this because at idle in battery saving mode the video memory stays at 1000 MHz. GDDR5 is power hungry and therefore produces a lot of heat. Lower clock values produces less heat and means they can make a different fan profile.

In the mean time MSI and AlienWare did produce a new video BIOS but at the moment is the one company not delivering.

I'm not sure that's true. I thought my G73 was pretty silent up until recently, but since about 2 days ago, it has started making constant loud fan noise as soon as it is opened or powered on. I haven't updated any drivers or BIOS for many months.

Ambient temperatures. They've got up, I'm assuming, so your computer has to work harder to keep it cool.

I had the mobo replaced on mine and the fans have been at 100% LOUD ever since. Before the RMA it was dead silent unless gaming. At least on mine I have tested everything possible, BIOS, vBIOS, Drivers, OS, I even took it apart to make sure the Asus techs put everything back together OK. No Success with anything. It seems as it is a motherboard issue that can only be fixed by RMA. After going through a 5 week RMA once, I amnot sure if I will do it again or live with the noise.

If anyone does find a fix, please share. :)

I've been having the same issue for a while now (maybe 2 or 3 months I think after I updated my drivers)

Here are the CPUID and HWinfo screenshots I have. I suspect it's a problem with the temperature sensor stuck at 102. I've heard of some other people complaining about the 102 degree sensor reading but I haven't seen any solutions. I tried reinstalling the driver for the motherboard but that didn't seem to do anything.

(Both fans are going >4000 rpms!)

    EDIT:
yes I updated the bios to 213 (after I did that whole vBios flash thing)

and to give more details, I do have more air coming from the right vent, and it seems to start during startup, and the computer takes a while (>30 s) to turn off (the hd is off, but the fan runs for that much longer)

Same issue G73J very loud fan noise - intermittent power off issues.
    Sounded like overheating to me.

Took the base plate off (two phillips screws) and blew compressed air in the rear air vents. Puff of dust - not huge though.

Can barely hear the fans now - had to put my ear on the laptop to confirm they were on.
