My model is a G73JH Notebook

    Specs are:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
    ATI Mobility Radeon 5870
    6GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    Intel Core i7 Q 720 @ 1.60 GHz Processor

Right now I'm using Safe Mode with networking.

Earlier today I was playing Oblivion and the game froze when I tried to alt-tab out. For some reason whenever I tried to open task manager it would switch right back to the game and wouldn't let me shut it down. So I clicked Log Out and cancelled it right after the game shut off, then I restarted the computer.

When I restarted, I got a windows failed to start error. I ran the startup repair and it seemed to work, but upon restarting it again it froze on the windows logo. Then I ran startup repair again and it said "Windows can not fix this problem automatically". I checked the error log and it said BadDriver on one of the lines. I'm guessing it's my display/graphics driver since I noticed it was acting funny yesterday, but I'd rather not mess with it and end up making things worse.

I've done system restore and startup repair several times, and no avail. Every time it still freezes on the windows logo after a few seconds. What might be a solution to this problem? I'd rather not reformat my computer.

Well, updating the graphics driver in safe mode worked. However, I don't trust it right now. If it's okay I'd like to keep this thread opened incase the problem arises again.

EDIT: Okay, new problem. Catalyst Control Center keeps crashing whenever I try to start it. Upon startup, an error message saying that the application stopped working. When I go to the start menu and open it, it immediately crashes.

I'd definitely start with cleaning out the video driver. Dunno how people feel about Driver Sweeper these days, but this seems like a decent time to use it. Once cleared, install new drivers and see if that helps.
