    Hi guys,

Just got this yesterday with an upgrade key. I installed it on my G73JH and tried keeping all software intact, the system kept hanging and freezing. Then I did a clean install from the boot and it worked. Now its working perfectly. Just thought others would have questions about drivers though.. So far, on a G73JH I am using the latest:

ATK driver (1.xxxx.20) I think ... newer than the G73JH one. I am using the G75's driver
Realtek HD audio 2.75 or 2.73 + HDMI audio driver
    ATI 12.11 beta driver
Creative X-fi surround Windows 7 driver
Intel chipset driver (G73JH version from ASUS website)
    The native network drivers.

I am still waiting for Synaptics touchpad gesture suite for windows 8.

So feel free to add on to this thread and post up concerns or issues or solutions.

    cheers,

    V

    Update:

Having issues with ATK package I think.

I tried switching displays without anything connected and normally on windows 7 it would only show icon for current display. Now it basically gave a new BSOD.... ATIKHDM..or something error.

Then....two or three restarts had to be hard boots by holding down power button as system kept freezing after boot. Then there was a BSOD that said MACHINE_check_exception.

Looks like Asus need to update drivers. Although doubtful if they will offer any for the G73 :(

Intel chipset driver causes system error. BSOD.

    Yup!

Also now...its back again to "old upgrade" style regular freezing. Windows starts and then at desktop or even start menu...it just freezes. I am using ati windows 8 driver 12.11 beta, but even then...its freezing. No BSOD nothing. Computer just stops responding. Very very unstable driver set. Never dealt with so much hangups or freezes ever. Something clearly not working out with the G73 and windows 8. Hopefully drivers will get worked out. Its a shame if it doesn't. There are some annoyances in windows 8, but overall, its a nice refreshing upgrade with some nifty features. Would hate to miss out on it.

i have read some people had the same problem like you but after clean install they were fine
can you do a clean install of the OS

Yup! I did do a clean install. But after installing drivers one by one...it was ok....then suddenly it started again... when I tried the function + F8 key...and then after restart, I tried updating the intel drivers ...and thats it...the computer would start but just freeze at the desktop or even...freeze at "BSOD.....collecting information (0%)". Heck...it even froze at chkdisk which ran ....scanning drive c for issues... (0%)

p.s i pretty much found drivers for windows 8 about every component on our laptop
let me know if you need something (still note tested but i have downloaded them for my installation)

Yeah! I am redoing a fresh clean install again. Will reply in a while.

Yeah...will stick to bare essentials. I am using a external Creative X-fi surround card (USB). That is what drivers I am installing. Maybe, I;ll let windows have its default drivers and see if it does any better.

Btw...which version ATK (and where to download) do u recommend for windows 8?

i have included the link for the ATK package in my previous post

if you are using external Creative xfi card probably you will be fine with the drivers provided but i was talking about the hacked Creative software that we were using with the stock realtek soundcard

btw i would stick with stable drivers not betas (Ati catalyst)

    one more thing
there are Synaptics touchpad drivers also for windows 8

I've had Windows 8 since when it was RTM (I have a Dreamspark Premium account from college, I got a key/iso for free from Microsoft). I did an upgrade from Windows 7 and used the previous drivers, and everything worked fine. I decided to experiment with the "newer" Windows 8 drivers today (ATK, Splendid, and Power4Hybrid). If you want to keep the Asus on-screen graphics, you HAVE to use all the old Windows 7 drivers, especially ATK. If you use a newer version than what is on the g73JH support and download page, it will break the graphics except for hotkeys (volume, brightness, etc.). For some reason asus broke the graphics function for both splendid and power4hybrid when they update the ATK packages.

I didn't really find anything bad about using the Windows 7 drivers. Only annoyance I guess is when you adjust the brightness both the Win 8 and Asus graphics show.

Honestly thinking about going back to Windows 7 when I buy an SSD. Windows 8 just seems to much of a hassle right now, and without proper drivers from Asus, you don't get everything you did in Windows 7. Other than that I do enjoy Windows 8.

the thing about the newer ATK driver (from another laptop) is that they design the driver for that laptop and that laptop doesn't have the twin turbo or splendid button but everything else should be fine (at least on mine it is)
the same goes with Power4hybrid , if you installed the newest one which is again not for our laptops you wont see the Turbo soft button there

Bug fixes, performance improvements, unless the new drivers break an older game that you play often (it rarely happens, but it happens sometimes), go for the latest drivers.

curious, been following this thread and either I'm going crazy or a couple of post just got deleted... I'm guessing that it's because the post was negative in nature? Or I could just be crazy ha

So far so good with W8 though on the G73, wrapping up a few driver updates but overall went very smoothly.

Posts that go against the forum rules get removed, it doesn't matter whether a post is negative or not, but it must stay within the rules. Replies to those posts get removed too because without the originally removed post, they are out of context unfortunately.

If you want to see negative stuff, look at the Windows 8 thread in the Windows section of the forum, plenty of hate there.

Flamming (or posts bound to start flamewars), trolling, insults and the likes aren't tolerated and are the most likely reason for posts to get removed.

btw if you dont like the Metro style there is a cheap software called Start8 that brings your standard windows 7 start button and menu

The freeze is because of the lan card (qualcom atheros) that you have installed from windows update. remove it and your freezing will go away.

That driver may cause freezing, but based on reports here I never updated it through Windows Update.... and I still had the very annoying freezes. No BSOD or errors, just a sudden FREEZE... nothing but a hard shutdown with power button would do anything.

For two separate clean installs, I had Windows 8 install it's thing and had no issues, then updated to the 12.10 ATI's, ATK package posted here, Intel chipset driver, Realtek 2.70, and never touched that windows update for the LAN, and had freezes and sleep issues. Laptop wouldn't recover from sleep properly, would appear to wake up but screen wouldn't return, ie stay black. And then also had the very annoying freezing issues... would sometimes run for almost an entire day just fine, but then FREEZE. Or I'd boot up, then FREEZE after two minutes, was very random and didn't appear linked to what I was doing at the time.

Currently, I am on the third fresh install of W8 (at least in W8 it's easy ha) convinced to figure out conflict as I've enjoyed it and the improved snappiness... at the moment have a fresh install, stock W8 drivers, and so far have updated Realtek 2.70 drivers only... no freezes yet in the past few hours of testing and sleep/wake is working properly. Trying to decide the best version of ATK to install next to get Fn keys working that won't cause issues, then will try ATI drivers and probably stop there if it is still stable.

UPDATE, I installed the ATI 12.10's and the sleep/wake problem has returned.... with the stock W8 video driver it would wake up every time, ie closing screen, sleeping, then opening screen and waking up or simply clicking sleep and then waking up with spacebar or power button. Now with updated ATI driver computer wakes up just fine, lights all come back on, but the screen stays blank.

Did not have this problem in W7.

    Anybody have this same issue?

Next going to install the ATK package to get keyboard Fn keys working properly.

Follow Up to Previous Driver Update:

Updated to the new AMD 12.11 Beta 11 drivers, and it did improve sleep issues! But, now it's an odd issue I'm not sure where to turn to fix:

When I sleep the laptop (either by closing lid or clicking sleep) it will now wake if I hit the power button OR click the mouse that is plugged into USB... which is great and like in Windows 7.

But, if I click the keyboard to wake the machine, it does the same blank screen as before, ie everything powers back up, keyboard lights up, all indicators light up, hard drive spins up etc.... except the screen stays blank... and it then requires a hard shutdown and restart with power button. Any thoughts?

Also, just curious, I had issues with the Intel Chipset drivers mentioned previously in this post causing freezes on my previous Windows 8 installs so avoided it this go around and have been much more stable (although still very occasionally get a freeze but much less often and not sure why it randomly will)... is Intel Rapid Storage Technology something I'd still want to install? If so any recommendations on drivers? I'm using all the stock Windows 8 drivers at this point other than AMD video, realtek sound, and ATK package for keyboard.

As a follow up, still getting the occasional freeze that will completely lock up the computer.... it's driving me completely nuts. Latest AMD 12.11 Beta 11's haven't solved it... its MUCH more stable than when I installed Windows 8 using the Intel chipset driver mentioned previously, but still happens every few days, and usually right when I'm doing something in the desktop environment. Today I was finalizing a set of house plans for a customer using nothing more intense than paint and right smack in the middle froze hard and lost my progress. Previously it's been while using Word, using file explorer, or just surfing the web. Not linked to anything intensive, ie has never frozen in game. I really don't think it's hardware related as I never had any stability issues at all before upgrading to Windows 8 and would run for days on end. Not sure what else to do. If I can't figure it out I'll have to either go back to Windows 7 which I really don't want to do or scrap the G73 and move on to something newer with Windows 8 preinstalled. Crashing in games is one thing, but when I actually lose work because of crashing it's a whole different animal.

    Sorry for the double post.

A double post can only really be considered a double post if it's been less than 24h if you go by the strictest interpretation of the forum rules. ;) The idea is to avoid thread bumping for the sake of thread bumping. You have nothing to be sorry about.

I haven't tried 8 on my G73, but no hanging on my M6700 what so ever. That said, I haven't used Windows 8 for long on it since i kept 7 on it's own SSD since all my programs for the PhD are on 7 and i don't have the time to reinstall everything in one go.

    Hi there!

I have the same problem with my G73JH-A1 and Widnows 8. Random freeze when resuming from sleep. It seems that the video card is overheating during sleep since Windows freeze many time afterwards until it cool off. (Since you said that updating the ATI drivers helps I'm probably right.) If I boot my laptop just after it froze from sleep, it boots but freeze soon after. I have to let it cool off before booting it again...

Is your problem resolved since your last post be77solo?

Installed win 8 on my G73jh last night. everything running good all stable so far. im running all the drivers chasity linked and i think the newest Win8 ATK .
some things im wondering is with the turbo boost, i cant make the button work , but if i have it enabled in the bios it should be good right? i have no reason to turn it of, so i rather run it all the time .

Im running catalyst 12.8 and no issues so far

not getting the sleep hangs or random freezes

still need to get used to win 8 , upgraded because i just built my wife a new desktop with Win 8 and i rather have them both on the same OS

Does anyone else get BSODs either as soon as putting it to sleep, or while it's sleeping? Most of the time it does it, sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes I open it back up to a small purple rectangle in the middle that's kind of pixelated and has the sad face screen.
    I'm on 12.11, CAP 2.

I never could get mine to run 8 perfectly stable... it would run great but then randomly freeze as previously mentioned. Not sure why, never figured it out after multiple clean installs and every combo of driver i could come up with and finally gave up and went back to 7. Havent had a single freeze or hiccup since.

Frustrating but rock stable 7 was a better choice then once a day freeze on 8 for me... I have since used my 8 install on my m11x.

The Turbo functionality stopped being supported after version .37. If you are running Win8, I suggest you stick to the 2.x versions of P4GH for better compatibility. You can still enable TwinTurbo in BIOS.

Update your INF as I posted above. You can also disable / re-enable hibernation to wipe out the hibernation file and recreate it. Sometimes a corrupted hibernation file can cause crashes.

For Bluetooth, use the latest release from Broadcom. I'm sure the Asus site has it, but buried in their menus.

i just started having problems with my display driver i think.
after playing assassins creed 3 all day on my g73jh
while i was playing last night the game crashed and i got a whole bunch of these
"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
everytime i tried re-opening assassins creed it would crash , and i had artifacts showing up on the screen .
then the display started going black and comming back on , and i kept getting the error about the display driver
so i shutdown the computer for the night
and now this morning when i turned it back on , same problem , artifacts on screen , screen going black , same error, couldn't even open up control panel with the frequency of the driver crashing
but i would have no problems when on the win 8 start menu, only when i went back to desktop mode would everything go crazy

so i restarted again and now after the second restart im not having any issues, i uninstalled the catalyst i have on.and now im here

anyone exerience this issue? im not sure what version of catalyst i had installed

I would first try uninstalling whatever driver you have installed with an Express Uninstall, run Driver Sweeper, reboot, and then install 12.10, or 12.11 b11.

Then test everything to make sure all is well.

I appreciate the conversation here. I have done a fresh install with the newest version of win8. Everything works, except the laptop is going to sleep by itself no matter how I set the power. Any ideas??

Check your Power4Gear settings, and check the Advanced settings. Also make sure you are correctly changing either "On Battery" or "On AC" settings.

Can anyone confirm to me that with a G73JH-A1 (window 8 X64) and Catalyst 13.1 or the 13.2 beta if we try to uninstall the drivers, Its a constant BSOD with a SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED.

It doesn't happen on the driver that came with windows 8 tho.

Also just disabling the Generic uPnp monitor will cause the same bsod....

I've swapped between 13.2 beta and 13.1 WHQL without any issues. I'd start by updating your chipset drivers.

Done already. In fact I did all you suggested in previous post..

1 Question tho. are you using a tv connected with hdmi or just the notebook screen? and is your model modified and is it a A1 ? could be affecting.
My vbios is also updated to the one without the overdrive (so the official update).
    Thanks for your answer.

can you also give me the model number of your Laptop lcd?
you can find it in the CCC
I fear there might be something related to some model because when using my tv I can disable its Generic pnp monitor but not the one of the LCD. so there could be a detection issue. I have filled a report to AMD already

The reason I do this odd disable of the Generic pnp monitor is that i found that its what trigger the BSOD when the driver is uninstalling..

    Chastity,

Sorry for being a noob, where do I preform this step at? Or point me to a link so I will understand how to do this step.

Run the INF updater with -overall, then update RST.

And are you talking about the video on this part?
I'm also on 12.10 atm, since I use the Netflix gadget
